To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

that is a person and they can feel pain and fear and their life is being ended

What a stupid fucking comment. This is the pro life bullshit.

comfortablyfrumpy · 24/06/2022 18:02

An attack on women. I had really hoped it would not go through. Gutted that it has

They just already had all the children they wanted and didn’t fancy having another

What's wrong with that? Should they have all the children you fancy them having?

Exactly. Why on earth does a woman's choice have anything to do with someone else? Regardless of their reason for it, they are entitled to it.

Jacob Rees Mogg?

Not even him. He may be very odd and arguably a God botherer but he is also a pragmatist. Whatever his personal beliefs he knows fine well any bill to curb abortion (or contraception) would never get through Parliament.

I think the problem is people are not blasé enough about abortion.

@Pumperthepumper
in what way can I ask ?

StaunchMomma · 24/06/2022 18:05

America takes yet another step towards Gilead.

Really worrying.

Furries · 24/06/2022 18:05

This decision is awful, I don’t think I can voice anything at the moment - am sat here feeling completely numb.

MoominFeatures · 24/06/2022 18:06

Hello all.

My initial reaction to the news was aligned with you all - headlines read as though this is a shocking strip away women’s rights.

If you read the judgment itself it’s not simply a case of the extreme anti-choicers winning the battle completely though - the ruling is about whether the constitution as it exists today confers a right to abortion for women. The justices have ruled that the archaic constitution currently doesn’t (a result of it being mega out of date and arguably unfit for purpose in its current form in the context of modern society) and have said that to enshrine that right the matter will be one for democracy to decide - the question should be put to a vote of the people. What it doesn’t mean though is that, unless the constitution is amended (or local state law contemplates choice), there is no AUTOMATIC right to choice.

I daresay it seems to me to be likely a key manifesto item for voters to consider in elections…

Another reason why, in my view, the US constitution needs a serious update to better align it with society today (as opposed to society some 200+ years ago…).

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 18:06

@Brideandprejudice , I really struggle to understand why anyone would be overjoyed at this decision.

Are you overjoyed about the women who may die in childbirth? About the women who will be forced into potentially dangerous illegal abortions? About the women who will kill themselves rather than go through with an unwanted pregnancy? Or about the children who may be neglected, abused or abandoned because their mothers were not in a position to take care of them properly?

What on earth is there to celebrate here?

My thoughts on abortion have become a lot more nuanced since all this in America has brought it to the forefront. Ultimately, I still believe a women should have the choice - of course she should. However, when you look at the abortion numbers - in the U.K. as well as the US. It is utterly sickening, horrifying, stomach-churning. So so many. It cannot be denied people have become too blasé about it. I personally have three friends/acquaintances (that I know of) who have had abortions when they are already happily married, well off (not rich but certainly comfortable), in their 30s, good health etc. They just already had all the children they wanted and didn’t fancy having another. I was outwardly supported but I did feel shocked deep down. All the stuff about the foetus not being a baby, just a bundle of cells etc is untrue - that is a person and they can feel pain and fear and their life is being ended. Sometimes this is unfortunately necessary and women need to be able to choose but we’ve lost our way culturally, lost our reverence and respect for babies and the fact that it’s seen as no big deal is wrong.

@Lesserspottedmama
dont be so stupid . How can it feel fear ?

turbonerd · 24/06/2022 18:08

I’m sure it has been said, but the USA is such a fucking shithole country.
This is the start of the Endgame, and I’m not sure if they should be world police anymore.

EU - your time has come?

In that if it was treated as a simple, easily-accessed procedure, women would be a lot safer.

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 15:33

American women should fucking riot.

Thing is, it's not a male vs female issue. A lot of women in the US support the roll back of this legislation. Whether they'll support it when their teenage daughter dies after a back street abortion, or when they themselves need an abortion, we'll see.

Didn’t “fancy” having another or couldn’t afford to?

And if you really believe that a foetus feels pain and fear ( and I think you are pretty much on your own there) then isn’t that also going to be true for the table top abortions that will now occur? For the incomplete botched abortions?

No one for a moment, not even the Supreme Court judges think that todays vote will stop abortions, they will just be done for huge profit for those who can afford it, and at huge risk for those women who are desperate but who can’t afford to bribe their way to a safe abortion.

God Bless America, oh the irony.

the refrain of the naive at the moment…

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 18:09

According to the American Journal of Public Health 1 in 4 American women has had an abortion by the age of 45.
And you can bet a big chunk of those are 'god-fearing', Republican women who publicly present as being anti-abortion.

I shared your views, when I was about 14. I thought I was being oh-so-reasonable. Then Real Life intruded and I grew up. I realised that claiming women should have a choice while putting all sorts of caveats on that choice was childish and rather pathetic.

If you are overjoyed by a decision that will allow states to refuse women bodily autonomy, you're a disgusting person

Someone could equally say if you refuse a foetus the right to life you are a disgusting person. What are you going to gain by personal attacks, it certainly won’t win anyone over to your viewpoint.

christinarossetti39 · 24/06/2022 18:11

There doesn't seem much political motivation to curb abortion rights in the UK at the moment, but that could change very quickly.

Not sure many people would have seen this coming in the States even a couple of years ago.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 24/06/2022 18:12

Give me strength…. I can’t abide hand wringing over terminated pregnancies and the sanctity of life when it doesn’t extend to women and born children who are in poverty, in the system, and suffering when there is absolutely no need…..

Every aspect of our life is commodified and used for capitalist gain….. sanctity of life my arse….. at least part of this is probably because if birth rates drop too much the economic apple cart will be upset and there will be an impact at the top of the tree …..

Think of the actual, profitable industries that exist to manage the “vulnerable”, usually in that position due to environment and infrastructure deprivation - private prisons, clinics, all making money out of misery, when in this day and age the root causes could be addressed rather than soaking up the spilt milk down the line and filling the pockets of those who engineered it all and don’t give a stuff about anything other than their assets.

Hypocrisy, misogyny, all the worse facets of human nature are laid bare in these decisions and wait for the slow creep….. it will keep coming….

Sorry for the rant, there’s a huge picture behind this I believe, and it’s nothing to do with saving little souls…..

Absolutely raging on behalf of women in America …..
