To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

For anyone who thinks this is not coming our way you need to wake up.

As I mentioned previously, the U.K.’s way of rolling back women’s rights isn’t by making it a religious/moral issue, because British people tend not to be overtly religious in their nature. It’s by pitting women’s rights against the rights of another ‘needier’ group, because then any women who want to preserve their rights can be painted as ‘oppressive’ or ‘mean’.

We see it with trans rights in order to erode our spaces, and we will see it with disability rights in order to roll back abortion. There is a very large and growing community of people with disabled children who want prenatal testing and abortion rolled back, who are making the debate an emotional one in order to suppress opposition.

The tactics are different to the USA but the outcomes are the same.

As PP said, Brits need to address the abortion issue in N Ireland.

I think it’s a reminder to be ever vigilant about women’s rights. We can’t afford to concede even small gains. I don’t think abortion rights here will be limited/removed on the same grounds as the USA, eg religious/moral. I think it will start as a ‘disability rights’ movement, antenatal testing will be limited, and it will go from there. I hope the court of appeal uphold the high court’s decision in July, otherwise it will the UK’s first step to following the USA I feel.

I absolutely agree with this.
It's a really frightening situation. I'm so angry and upset on behalf of American women

Yes, very well put.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/06/2022 17:29

CertainUncertain I'm saying that, IMO, it's too easy for people to infest their public roles with the dogma attached to their personal faiths, and that this is even more unacceptable in nations where church and state are supposed to be separate

To be clear I've absolutely no issue with personal faiths per se, only if they cross over from being a private matter to affecting public policy - and while circumstances will differ, that applies no matter what the faith happens to be

Brideandprejudice · 24/06/2022 17:29

Perhaps people should actually bother to read what this means instead of assuming that abortions have been banned in America.

I for one am overjoyed.

Absolutely not , the fact that anyone had a constitutional right to kill another human is insanity.

A fetus isn't a human, it is not capable of indecent life outside of the womb and does not possess personhood.

How do you feel about the constitutional right to bear arms, a law that is responsible for over 18,000 gun deaths so far this year?

jeaux90 · 24/06/2022 17:30

They will go after contraception too. IUDs will specifically be targeted.

If you are overjoyed by a decision that will allow states to refuse women bodily autonomy, you're a disgusting person

A fetus isn’t a human ? Then wtf is it ?

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2022 17:34

Don't have the links to the studies, from Lewis Goodall

One study predict that between 94000 and 144000 people who want abortions won’t be able to obtain one during year one of Roe’s abolition. Ie abortion would be reduced by 15%. Another study estimated maternal mortality would increase by 20%

Nail on head!!!

once women includes “also men who feel like women ” then you can no longer protect womens rights. You cannot defend what you cannot define.

only women however they identify or present or capable of pregnancy, not “people”, “women”

tje fact that even now Elizabeth Warren is twatting on about the effect on “pregnant people” shows they still STILL don’t get how this has happened

WooFighters · 24/06/2022 17:35

Regardless of what this means in practicality this is a huge blow to the concept of women's rights and autonomy.
So upsetting how many women will be impacted by this. Not to mention children too.
And above posters are right, trans issues are not a wedge. It's a pincer movement with misogyny coming from both left and right so whichever way women look they're screwed. Having to make the choice between girls like Selina Soule losing scholarships to natal men or having women forced to give birth is not a happy decision and shame on anyone for judging if the 'wrong' one is made.

Snowflakes1122 · 24/06/2022 17:36

So women are being erased, and now being told what they can and cannot do with their own bodies?

We are being turned into second class citizens more than ever and misogynists are coming out in force to push this.
