To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

And a warning to us all about what happens when culture wars are stoked by online activism to the point where they are allowed to divide a population so that every issue becomes so controversial.

So very well put. This polarisation of pretty much everything is very frightening. "You're either with us or against us". Thanks George W Bush.

tillytown · 24/06/2022 17:03

When the pharmaceutical companies convinced America that people could get pregnant, not just women, they turned abortion into a peoples issue completely removed from womens rights. This is the result they wanted, a easy way to boost their profits from all the aftercare women will need from unsafe abortions It's a win for big pharma.

Rinatinabina · 24/06/2022 17:03

I really hope women try to move en masse to states where they actually are recognised as humans and not just incubators.

Spanielsarepainless · 24/06/2022 17:03

At the risk of sounding frivolous, I suggest American woman refuse to have sex.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 24/06/2022 17:04

Fundamentalist christians.

Ahh say no more!

ClaudineClare · 24/06/2022 17:05

The people celebrating are deeply fucking disturbed - this from some British rapper who seems a right charmer.

Its terrifying

I've got old uni friends in Texas, in Wyoming. They are scared and worried about where this is going.

Totally agree. I fucking hate these culture wars. Everything is so black and white that many people go to extremes, however, most of us in real life recognise life is nuanced. How do we roll this back? I fear all out civil war in America which will reverberate around the world the way things are going.

Abuildingwith4wallsandtmrinsid · 24/06/2022 17:07

There is such a wide spectrum of why a woman/teenager would have an abortion. Do you think the States outlawing abortion absolutely will also limit/ban antenatal tests? This could affect all pregnant women in those States. Even if you are happily married and planning on having children and have conceived a much wanted child, antenatal testing can throw up serious issues/severe disabilities or pregnancy can cause serious life threatening health issues for the mother. What about very early deliveries for e.g pre eclampsia if the law suddenly favours the baby over the mother? What about all the obstetricians in those States banning abortions even for rape/medical reasons. I doubt they will want to keep living and practising in such a state so they will have an exodus of qualified medics as well.
The only positive I can see in any of this is the fact that most sensible women will now vote Democrat, regardless of their other beliefs. I hope the Democrats mobilise quickly in this regard.

KisstheTeapot14 · 24/06/2022 17:09

Shocking and scary. I really feel for those women and girls (in the particular states it will apply to them) who will experience the reality of this decision.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/06/2022 17:09

They weren't persuaded by the arguments. They just fucking lied

Very probably, yes - but they can hardly admit that, so they'll waffle to "justify" their decisions

I'm familiar with how the system's supposed to work, but fundamentalists don't care; their minds are so seized with the rightness of their position that their version of right and wrong comes before all else

onthefencesitter · 24/06/2022 17:09

I agree with a previous poster that they want to ensure a steady supply of babies from 'nice backgrounds '. Steve jobs was born in the 1950s and his biological mum was a college student doing her Phd.. today someone from the same background is likely to choose an abortion. They want to go back in time so that affluent white couples get the same breadth of choice while compromising on the rights of the disadvantaged and vulnerable. Next step would be Jim crow laws and restrictions on contraception.

Wouldloveanother · 24/06/2022 17:09

I think it’s a reminder to be ever vigilant about women’s rights. We can’t afford to concede even small gains. I don’t think abortion rights here will be limited/removed on the same grounds as the USA, eg religious/moral. I think it will start as a ‘disability rights’ movement, antenatal testing will be limited, and it will go from there. I hope the court of appeal uphold the high court’s decision in July, otherwise it will the UK’s first step to following the USA I feel.

Agree

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/06/2022 17:11

This is utterly, utterly horrifying. I say this as someone who was raised a strict Catholic. I've obviously rejected it as an adult. Those poor, poor women and girls. I can't believe it. And to hear the threat of also removing the right to contraception.
I think people need to march on the US Embassay and look into ways that outside countries can support American women. I have no idea how though.

I'm terrified for my own daughters rights in this country too, given the creep of far right ideologies into England.

Trainbear · 24/06/2022 17:12

Are there other countries where TOP is illegal?

If only non-consenual sex wasn't one of the reasons why abortion is necessary and if only there wasn't a massive overlap between people who agree with restricting abortion/contraception and people who think it's womens duty to submit to mens needs.

So much this

women should submit to men’s needs
but no contraception
no abortion
then vilified and offered no support for an unplanned pregnancy

Legrandsophie · 24/06/2022 17:00

Nice try. Not buying it. I wondered how long it would take someone on ‘the right side of history’ to make this the fault of other women. We’ll done on revealing the misogyny of that movement.

The women on Twitter fighting for women’s right have been fighting against this as well. The women you are smearing as right wing are almost all traditionally left wing advocates who have spent decades before the trans rows fighting for women’s access to healthcare.

In fact, the whole trans argument is a culture war imported from America. This is an incredibly sad day for women in the US. And a warning to us all about what happens when culture wars are stoked by online activism to the point where they are allowed to divide a population so that every issue becomes so controversial. The only hope for us all is to find more in common than divides us.

As the PP said, in the UK it is typically left leaning women who are fighting to retain the legal distinction between the sex and therefore our sex based rights.

If "men" can get pregnant then how is abortion a woman's rights issue? You can no longer argue that restricting abortion disadvantages women only. We all know it's an issue which only affects females but how do you make that argument without legal recognition of sex. It's really frightening how people cannot see where all this is heading.

For anyone who thinks this is not coming our way you need to wake up.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2022 17:21

It couldn't happen here?

Conservative MP Scott Benton celebrates the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade. In 22 states, that means near-immediate abortion bans.

LilacPoppy · 24/06/2022 17:24

Absolutely not , the fact that anyone had a constitutional right to kill another human is insanity.

FOJN · 24/06/2022 17:25

Elizabeth Warren has made a statement talking about this and the effect on "pregnant people", there you go, no longer a women's rights issue. FFS
