To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

I believe some states are planning to make it illegal for women to travel to another state to obtain an abortion.

Even if not illegal, not everyone will have the money/means to travel 😡

Kidsaretryingtodestroyme · 24/06/2022 16:48

I actually think American women now have the right to claim asylum abroad. They are in danger (better serve U.K. though in case they end up in Rwanda).

My mother is happy too- phoning around like minded friends to share the good news.

What on earth is wrong with your family?! Celebrating womens rights being removed.

Didn't Trump stuff the supreme court full of fascists? Hardly surprising this is the outcome.

yes but something can be simultaneously utterly unsurprising and stomach twistingly shocking at the same time.

Who the fuck are the 4% who think you're being unreasonable?

I am RAGING.

I also wondered.

I am repulsed. This has nothing to do with protecting anything or anyone. It is about control and it is so so sinister it makes me feel physically sick.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/06/2022 16:52

It is horrifying. In a very short space of time half of the USA is expected to make abortion illegal. It’s shameful, misogynistic and regressive.

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 24/06/2022 16:52

It’s disgusting that this has been allowed to happen in what’s supposedly a shining beacon of a country. Abortion is healthcare. But then, I suppose they aren’t too fussed about providing people with that either, are they? Fuckers.

Kidsaretryingtodestroyme · 24/06/2022 16:53

Can Biden increase number of judges and ensure the rest are non religious? What happened to the separation of church and state FFS?

Wouldloveanother · 24/06/2022 16:53

MissMarpleRocks · 24/06/2022 16:29

This will happen here won’t it? God I feel sick.

I was just discussing this with DH. I don’t think it will happen here - however there is a growing movement trying to roll back abortion rights under the umbrella of ‘disability equality’ - they’re heading to the U.K. Court of Appeal on July 13th. One to watch, although surprisingly few women seem to know about this one.

TokyoSushi · 24/06/2022 16:53

Awful, it's a really dark day.

Huntswomanonthemove · 24/06/2022 16:53

Shades of The Handmaid’s Tale, frightening!

Kpo58 · 24/06/2022 16:54

So how much more does America need to do to be downgraded to a 3rd world country?

ihavespoken · 24/06/2022 16:48

Even if not illegal, not everyone will have the money/means to travel 😡

I believe in Texas it's theoretically illegal to help a pregnant woman travelling out of state in order to get an abortion even if you don't know why she's travelling - very very Gilead.

HesterShaw1 · 24/06/2022 16:54

dreamingbohemian · 24/06/2022 16:44

From Bill Weir on Twitter, about the states where abortion is now immediately illegal or will be within the next 30 days:

Abortion banned without exception for health of the mother:
Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota

Without exceptions for rape:
Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas

Without exceptions for incest:
Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas

These people don't care if you will die giving birth, they don't care if you're 13 and raped by your father. Fucking fascists.

I really struggle to comprehend this.

tigger1001 · 24/06/2022 16:55

Although not surprising news, I still am upset by it. A country that think it's it's ok to sell weapons to 18 year olds which are then used to kill children - but that's ok they are just collateral damage. I have no words really

And agree with the post that said America hasn't stopped abortion- it's stopped safe abortions.

Theluggage15 · 24/06/2022 16:56

Horrendous and frightening decision. And yes as a PP said, Poland banned abortions last year much to the distress of my Polish friends.

noodlezoodle · 24/06/2022 15:52

People who swan around being indulgently ‘uncomfortable’ at the thought of a ‘baby’ (fetus) being terminated, because they are probably fairly privileged and cannot imagine what it would be like to have a baby as a single teen mum, or with an abusive father, or to parent a child with severe disabilities. And of course, they know they won’t personally have to pick up any of the pieces of such babies being born.

dreamingbohemian · 24/06/2022 16:56

So do I @HesterShaw1

MissStarry · 24/06/2022 16:59

Awful and really shocking news. Speechless.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 24/06/2022 16:59

Absolutely devastated for them. Particularly for those specific groups of women who will have to seek dangerous backstreet abortions because they have no choice- risking and potentially losing lives all for men in power who cannot and will not seperate church and state.

Legrandsophie · 24/06/2022 17:00

Kidsaretryingtodestroyme · 24/06/2022 16:46

Notice how the far right uses trans as a wedge issue to encourage women to ignore the bullshit anti women agenda. They tell women to look at a minority of outlier crazies on Twitter screaming about pronouns whilst those with actual power dismantle our rights. Look at the pitiful number of rape convictions for Christ’s sake.

Wake up!

Nice try. Not buying it. I wondered how long it would take someone on ‘the right side of history’ to make this the fault of other women. We’ll done on revealing the misogyny of that movement.

The women on Twitter fighting for women’s right have been fighting against this as well. The women you are smearing as right wing are almost all traditionally left wing advocates who have spent decades before the trans rows fighting for women’s access to healthcare.

In fact, the whole trans argument is a culture war imported from America. This is an incredibly sad day for women in the US. And a warning to us all about what happens when culture wars are stoked by online activism to the point where they are allowed to divide a population so that every issue becomes so controversial. The only hope for us all is to find more in common than divides us.

Can Biden increase number of judges and ensure the rest are non religious? What happened to the separation of church and state FFS?

Theoretically yes.

But he likely isn’t radical enough to do so, nor would it get through the 50/50 split senate.

You’re going to need a Dem president who would be willing to take the step of expanding the court, and who is able to secure a big enough majority in both houses to make it possible.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/06/2022 17:01

Can Biden increase number of judges and ensure the rest are non religious?

I hate to remind you, but Biden is catholic too
I'm fully aware what he's said about this in his role as a politician - aware, too, that when it comes to a vote things can change

What happened to the separation of church and state FFS?

What indeed? Sad
