To ask what makes someone seem ‘classy’?

Not rich but the calm, serene and classy vibe that some people just give off?

To me it’s about being slow, polite and considered if that makes sense, never rushed. Plus looking well put together.

I’m always rushing and speaking too fast and seem harassed but I’d LOVE classier!

@RevoltingHumanHead what's a marcel wave?

oakleaffy · 24/06/2022 00:59

Not using the word "classy". I've no idea why, but true

Absolutely true.
It's never a word that people would use to describe themselves.

It's about poise, confidence, looking slim and understated.

''Noblesse Oblige''
Good bogography..~To read on the loo!

Aussiegirl123456 · 24/06/2022 01:13

I think it’s all a facade. I have been told by clients and colleagues that I’m perceived as classy. I honestly couldn’t think of anything further from the truth. If only they saw me in the weekends.

dottypotter · 23/06/2022 22:48

No tattoos.

Judgemental.

MidnightMeltdown · 24/06/2022 01:38

I think a lot of it comes down to good manners and good taste.

Never being too done up, but not too casual either. No loud prints, no polyester, no revealing too much skin, or wearing anything too tight fitting, no sky scraper heels, not too much makeup.

Not being too loud, being calm and not too emotional, not putting elbows on the dining table, not watching too much tv (especially not soaps and reality tv). News, artistic films, and the occasional documentary may be ok. Not owning a hot tub. Not carrying well known 'try too hard' status symbol designer handbags. Not getting drunk. Ever. Definitely not owning a tattoo! 😱

Being educated and knowledgeable about things (Love Island and crisp flavours don't count). Enjoys buying antiques, viewing old buildings and art galleries.

I am not one of these people btw, but I know plenty!

These threads pop up all the time and are so depressing.

What makes someone classy, I think, is not giving a toss about whether someone else thinks they’re classy. Or being obsessed by appearances and the like… just my two cents.

The most overused trope ever. Unless you live in a vacuum and have no interactions with humans ever, you simply cannot afford to care about what others think. In real life, there’s no one that doesn’t care about what anyone (at all) thinks.

For what it’s worth, the responses on this thread are actually quite classy. Considered, smart, vivid and an insight into classy character traits.

Redorblues · 24/06/2022 02:08

Y'all conflating classy with cool, which is fair enough.

Everyone has a personal idea of what classy is, but some people are just fucking cool.

Not using the word "classy". I've no idea why, but true.

Otherwise, as above. I used to be classy apparently, but the older I get, the less unconscious effort I put in to how I'm perceived.

I had no idea how much day to day energy I was exerting, being put-together, managing my natural oversharing instincts etc etc.

I don't think I realised how"trained" I was, growing up. What to wear, how to wear it, what people want to hear, how to behave, how to speak, it's only when I started raising my own children, who have various diversities, that I realised how much of it was NONSENSE.

I appreciate I'm lucky I can still put on the facade, but really, so exhausting.

Thank you for this anazing post. I agree completely.

Also clean, tidy and so boring, so its not necessarilly something I think of as aspirational.

So filthy, messy and "interesting" is better?

Those are the people that most people cross the street to avoid.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 24/06/2022 03:55

A cigarette holder 👌

I don't think that's the opposite of what she means - sounds to me as if she's talking about bland, non-threatening, and not voicing opinions that might be considered startling.

Kate M, to me, would be the epitome of "classy". I think of her as infinitely well turned out, endlessly polite, not rocking the boat, knowing where to tread.

Someone who, at some point in middle age, may well be spotted drinking gin with a straw, weeping gently whilst polishing the silver. Lamenting the fact that they have always been a lumpen size 14, and wondering whether this is the reason no one shows her affection except the dogs; because in every other way she followed all the rules, and yet her she is.

On the other hand, they might be the one who, at a great age, takes huge comfort in the fact that they're still a size 6, and still fit into their wedding dress, because, honestly, having standards was the most important thing in their lives, and they don't understand quite what happened..... why they followed all the rules and yet now have nothing tangible to show for it, and none of her family visits unless she issues a three-line whip.

Sorry to go a bit dark, but I have both these characters in my family!

NRRK28 · 24/06/2022 06:36

@GinGym usually classy people we often see in upper middle class. You can see they all are really well groomed and thin. They really think of their appearance. I’m size 16. I always dress nice. I bought dress from reiss, lk bennet but i still dont feel classy and well groomed because the dress are better in smaller size people than my size. So yeah i think classy people really taking care of their appearance including their body.

Lululoveslife · 24/06/2022 06:52

Great haircut, usually a bob
Doesn’t wear cheap clothes like Primark, H&M etc
Subtle makeup
Slim and fit
No obvious cosmetic enhancements especially the frozen look and inflated lips
No tattoos
Doesn’t show too much flesh
Well spoken
Doesn’t drink too much
Well mannered and polite
Unflappable
Professional career
If a mum she has well dressed kids in private education

Kate Middleton would be the poster girl for classiness

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 24/06/2022 07:05

All the people I've ever known who are classy:

  • Are slim (but then I thought of Ina Garten, who is VERY classy but not slim at all)
  • Wear good-quality clothes made of natural fibres - lots of linen in the summer
  • Wear clothes which are in a neutral colour palette (navy, white, grey, camel, khaki)
  • Have good posture
  • Don't wear too much makeup
cinq · 24/06/2022 08:23

It’s definitely a matter of personal opinion. I agree with tattoos. I appreciate them on other people for the intricate artwork but I wouldn’t call them classy or chic. I know I’ll be shot down for that but it’s my opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fairislefandango · 24/06/2022 08:34

Lots of people have a strong reaction to this question and it clearly means different things to different people. But really, there are positive traits which crop up in most people's definition of 'classy'. The ones which have nothing to do with money or attractiveness, but rather with kind, civilised behaviour.

Oh and using the word 'classy' may not be classy, but neither is pointing that out in other people's postsWink.

PinkButtercups · 24/06/2022 08:40

NRRK28 · 23/06/2022 23:46

Well dressed, well spoken, well groomed and not fat.

😧

Mangogogogo · 24/06/2022 08:40

Everyone on here I’d just describing someone boring as hell.

be you op! (As long as you’re not a cunt)

Aseagullatemybaby · 24/06/2022 08:45

@Mangogogogo 😆I said the same.. sounds shite and exhausting

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 24/06/2022 08:46

@Mangogogogo
Everyone on here I’d just describing someone boring as hell.

I'm not - I only commented on appearance, not personality. I know 'classy' people with huge personalities - they're not boring at all.

Presumanly your comment is on the same spectrum as:

  • you can't be a real woman and a size 10
  • if you keep your home clean and tidy it means you're dull and lack a creative and artistic streak!
OceanbreezeSun · 24/06/2022 08:51

I think it’s 80% personality/actions and 20% how you look.

Some of my friends have tattoo’s, they are very classy. They carry themselves with a quiet confidence and charisma. They don’t try too hard.
They also look well groomed.

Overall, I think it’s an attitude.

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 24/06/2022 08:53

I think it's 90% posture. Sit and stand straight, open expression. Talk less listen more.

Appalonia · 24/06/2022 08:54

I'd describe someone like Anthony Head or Jane Seymour as 'classy'. Elegant, well spoken, attractive, polite and charming.

NameChangeNameShange · 24/06/2022 08:56

Lord some of this is depressing. Classy doesn't necessarily mean boring, bitter, repressed or any of the other negative views below.

I have a friend who is - for me - the living definition of classy. She looks well turned out regardless of occasion. She is calm almost all the time, but she has a core of steel, and a wicked sense of humour both of which come out the more she knows you. She also has a huge heart and is always the first to help but equally always the last to shout about it. Her friends and family adore her, and I'd want her by my side in any crisis.

In truth she had a very chaotic childhood and just refuses to live like that anymore or let her children experience it. She is absolutely resolute it what matters and refuses to get drawn into the rest.

DaphneeBridgerton · 24/06/2022 08:58

Neat / painted nails
Painted toe nails
Shiny hair
Understated but expensive jewellery
Well fitted clothes
Wearing cream/white oversized linen
A smart tote bag
Good manners
