To wear shorts to the office?

Does it look unprofessional? I’m not really a dress/skirt kind of person.

I work in a corporate environment - but people do wear trainers, T-shirts etc

To wear shorts to the office?

The upset over linen trousers! 😂

But it’s ok because apparently Chanel do linen jackets but these may or may not be popular in France I can’t remember.

I mean I did think this too …

To be fair there have only been 2 posts (in a thread of 150ish) where posters spoke about their husbands workplace, and they were to share where there had been issues.

You seem to be very combatitive in this thread OP, where people are simply giving you responses to a question you asked - unlike the other thread you started in AIBU one hour before this one asking for more advice on how to understand the behaviour of an ex Tinder hook-up gone sour, where you haven't returned to acknowledge any of the responses at all.

Maybe he just didn't like your dress sense?

How strange that a successful young lady with a six-figure salary is scratching around on Tinder for a partner.

OP, do you think it was the cycling shorts that put him off?

AnneElliott · 21/06/2022 19:02

No I don't think you can wear those shorts in that picture to the office. My place is relaxed but my boss would probably ask if you'd forgotten your skirt while cycling in if you came in like that.

The only place I could have got away with that was my job in forensics as we wore gowns all day and it was hot- so no colleagues saw what you had on underneath. And I did wear shorts sometimes. But if you finished before the office was closed you'd have to walk past all the coppers still waiting (minus the gown)- and I wouldn't have wanted to encourage them. Grin

That was about 4 years ago now (I think). My husband died at 22 from cancer and after 3 years I felt ready to put myself out there but in a way that felt a bit more casual.

Maybe my dress sense put him off but there was no romantic connection from either side. I’ve also never met anyone in my life though who wears something that everyone loves. Maybe if I’d wore linen trousers I could have had him - my biggest regret in life.

I mean I could look up your posting history but I really don’t care as much as you do. It’s also not that deep.

As I said above, if only I’d worn the linen trousers and Chanel jacket. That prize man would have been mine:

They need to be long enough and baggy enough that they aren't likely to show any embarrassing outlines whilst also not being so baggy that they look untidy. If you can find a balance then fine. I don't want to see anyone's genitals in the office so I'd say keep shorts practical to avoid a ball dropping incident (or a labia dropping one in the case of women!)

Fluffymule · 21/06/2022 19:11

I didn't look at your posting history OP, I just happened to have replied to it yesterday evening and I recognised the same name in my 'threads you're on' list when I logged in this evening.

Most people post here in good faith. No all, but most.

You want to talk about “good faith” but you deliberately tried to derail this thread. Lolz.

Tailored shorts, that are a reasonable length, might be ok. Best worn with a proper shirt though, with a vest top or t-shirt they'll look a bit holiday-ish imo. And I love a shorts suit!

But how ok really depends on the work environment. If you're in a big, corporate accountancy or law firm, probably not, but in something like a tech company, probably fine.

I work for a charity and our dress code is very relaxed. Shorts are fine as long as they're not beach or sports shorts and no-one gives a toss if you wear flip-flops. There are a couple of men who actually look smarter in their summer wear of chino shorts and a polo shirt than they do in the winter in jeans and jumpers.

I pulled a photo off Pinterest to give an example of an outfit. I didn’t do extensive research into the brand or quality of clothing the model was wearing - to post on an Internet forum.

I personally don’t shop in Primark but I also don’t judge those that do. Also those shorts don’t look Lycra in that photo at all.

I think they are cotton with some Lycra content. That’s what people mean - they are tight and stretchy.

I used to wear city shorts years ago!

So did I 😅. I seem to remember they were quite in fashion in the very late 90s/early 00s. At least they were where I worked in the London (financial sector). But they were very tailored, worn with a belt, suit jacket and high shoes - and sat just above the knee. I think I had two pairs, navy and black.

I loved wearing them. I thought they looked really professional. The cut and length need to be spot on though.

I remember these. We were not allowed to wear them (law firm in the city).

Oh yes, love a cycling short under a dress! Ideal for chub-rub/sweaty leg issues and I actually think cycling shorts under a short dress look quite cute when they poke out a little bit underneath.

Can't beat these for chub rub

chub rub shorts

Jellybean27 · 21/06/2022 19:50

Who knew! Maybe Chanel do cycling shorts. The label makes all the difference apparently.

Really hoping you’ve bagged yourself a pair of “trendy” culottes too off the back of this post OP…

Thebeastofsleep · 21/06/2022 20:48

Some shorts, yes. But not cycling shorts. People where Chino shorts and denim shorts in our office (no hot pant style) but we do wear jeans normally anyway. I'd wear looser 'city' shorts in a more corporate, smarter environment. But not cycling shorts.

NippyWoowoo · 21/06/2022 21:30

Didn't know combative OP's were common in Style&Beauty 🍿 move over AIBU!

NippyWoowoo · 21/06/2022 21:31

saltinesandcoffeecups · 21/06/2022 23:59

Ok so the OP is clearly overheated from not wearing shorts.

In case anyone else has the same question, here goes. My company does allow shorts in their ‘dress for your day’ dress code. But no way in hell would those shorts fly.

Here is something more appropriate for office wear (If that is a stated option for you). bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=813859032&vid=1&tid=brpl000047&kwid=1&ap=7&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5J6qutK_-AIV4zo4Ch2d1w9nEAQYASABEgID7_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#pdp-certona-content

But weird that you think I’d want attention but then give me that attention. So I got what I wanted in the end and that’s all that matters ya’ll.

No poppet, I did not say you wanted attention.

its weird you should say that.

i was referring to the reactions folk might have to the wifey in the shorts.

unless you are identifying with the “I’m about to wet my. Knickers” scenario?

Nat6999 · 22/06/2022 01:26

I worked in shorts (Civil Service) I wore either tailored linen or cotton city shorts or when I wasn't customer facing on the knee length cargo shorts.

WestHamAreMassive · 22/06/2022 10:31

@TuxedoJunction exactly like that!

Me too, actually! Lots of condescending posts aimed at her too.

I have the budget for expensive linen dresses, but I I don't want to dress like my own mother just yet, so I don't blame you for not wanting to buy some, OP!

GoodThinkingMax · 22/06/2022 11:00

It's interesting isn't it, peoples news of what's both appropriate and stylish. I wouldn't be seen dead in shorts anywhere.

I’m currently wearing a Donna Karan suit - fabric is wool and linen and at my workplace - in an international and stylish profession (think creative arts) it’s always complimented. I’ve never seen any colleague wearing shorts in my field: they just wouldn’t be appropriate.

Gosh I wouldn’t be seen dead in a designer brand that trickles down into the likes of TK Maxx - each to their own.
