To wear shorts to the office?

Does it look unprofessional? I’m not really a dress/skirt kind of person.

I work in a corporate environment - but people do wear trainers, T-shirts etc

To wear shorts to the office?

If you were to wear these shorts, a few days later there would be a reminder of the corporate dress policy circulated. So you’d probably no longer get away with the not-strictly-allowed-but-appropriate things that people have been enjoying wearing the last couple of years. It’s pushing the boundaries which probably leads to the policy being cracked down on for everyone else.

onlythreenow · 21/06/2022 06:51

Another no to the shorts in the photo, and yes they do look like cycling shorts. Tailored shorts maybe, but not those.

onlythreenow · 21/06/2022 06:55

No to linen trousers (not just on this thread but in life)
m they’re unflattering mum trousers. The refuge of all who have given up

No, they are the refuge of those who don't want to swelter in warm weather.

Wheelz46 · 21/06/2022 06:55

Does your company not have a dress code policy?

In our office, you can wear smart jeans and trainers but those shorts are a firm no! Take the blazer away and the model looks like she is ready for a jog!

If a member of staff turned up in those, they would definitely be pulled to the side and the dress code policy sent out to remind everyone.

I do think, the fact that you need to ask if it's appropriate office wear, shows you it really isn't!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/06/2022 06:58

My hospital is now allowing staff to wear shorts. It looks dreadful and very unprofessional.

bellinisurge · 21/06/2022 06:59

When I lived in Northern Spain in the 80s this fashion was very common. I personally don't think body hugging shorts is appropriate for work. Even with a jacket over your arse

balalake · 21/06/2022 07:01

Not cycling shorts.

Real question to me is can you work from home some of the time?

TuxedoJunction · 21/06/2022 07:13

I used to wear city shorts years ago!

So did I 😅. I seem to remember they were quite in fashion in the very late 90s/early 00s. At least they were where I worked in the London (financial sector). But they were very tailored, worn with a belt, suit jacket and high shoes - and sat just above the knee. I think I had two pairs, navy and black.

I loved wearing them. I thought they looked really professional. The cut and length need to be spot on though.

Snog · 21/06/2022 08:25

If your office is all 20 somethings it might be ok. Less likely to go down well with 40+ age group I would think.

Marvellousmadness · 21/06/2022 08:26

Hahaha yes bike shorts. They are verrrrry profesional looking 😂😂

Stroopwaffels · 21/06/2022 08:31

DH has this ongoing problem at work - they have a set dress code of "tailored shorts" and people keep turning up in sports wear.

Cycling shorts not appropriate - but a tailored pair of any material would be.

Coldnoseandtoes · 21/06/2022 08:35

Some shorts might be OK, but most workplaces those ones would look too out of place, IMO. As soon as the blazer comes off you'd look like you might be ready for a spin class. Maybe if you work in a v young hipster company, but you've said it's corporate, so I'm guessing not.

Choopi · 21/06/2022 08:38

It's the type of thing influencers wear when they say they have a really busy day full of 'meetings' but mean they have to go to the hairdresser and get their nails done.

What's wrong with linen trousers? They get a bit creased but they are cool in hot weather and smarter than jeans.

What am I supposed to wear instead? Some hideous dress? I'd say they're the refuge of those who've given up, if you are going to be so rude. We all have different tastes in clothes.

Shorts are ok if longer and smart. And you don't need a tailored blouse or blazer with them unless your employer has a stuffy dress code but in that case you can't wear shorts anyway.

lap90 · 21/06/2022 08:38

Cycling shorts dont look professional, no.

riesenrad · 21/06/2022 08:40

Everyone has cellulite I don't and I am 50!

DashboardConfessional · 21/06/2022 08:42

I wore pretty much this outfit last week (very casual outfit and I wore shoes as opposed to sandals) but to be honest it only really "worked" because they look like a skirt anyway.

*casual office

BrimFullOfAsher · 21/06/2022 08:48

My office has a casual dress code with trainers, tes shirts etc allowed (hoodies etc in winter) but has a no shorts allowed policy, maybe check yours?

purplemunkey · 21/06/2022 08:48

The pic in the OP is a kids PE kit with a blazer over the top. Granted, the model makes it looks quite stylish but in reality, that’s what it is. And when you get to the office and take your blazer off because it’s too hot, you’ll look like a grown adult in a PE kit 😁

Tailored or smarter shorts and a decent top are probably more passable.

suckingonchillidogs · 21/06/2022 08:48

They don't look like they'd let anything breeaathe, I would go for a looser fit so you get some air circulating personally - especially on a warm day. And yes, it looks like she's cycled in and forgotten her bottom half.

Ugzbugz · 21/06/2022 08:58

I work in a corporate bullshit job and we don't have a dress code anymore so men do wear shorts. We aren't customer facing by the way.

When we used to have a smart causal dress code, we weren't supposed to wear smart jeans yet some men came in a way to short trousers, battered shoes, socks on display, yellow stained crumpled shirt and visibly dirty blazer but that's fine cos its a suit 🙄

Muppetryofthepenis · 21/06/2022 00:13

This reminds me of when my husband's crazy colleague showed up to teach wearing children's sized tracksuit bottoms which showed off his junk. Not joking.

I genuinely think I work with your husband. Did the teacher dance at the front of the class as a joke by any chance?

onlythreenow · 21/06/2022 09:10

It wasn't me who was rude about linen trousers, all I said was that they are the refuge of those who don't want to swelter in warm weather! If you are going to complain about someone being rude please address the poster who made the original comment, not the one who replied to it!

Whitehorsegirl · 21/06/2022 09:16

No.

First of all they are too tight and unflattering but they are also inappropriate. A bad version of cyclists' lycra shorts...

If you wear long-ish (think a bit above the knee), loose/tailored shorts in a fabric like linen for example it would be different.

If you wear the tight stuff you have pictured or the really short-shorts type (just below your bum) you will look really silly and out of place at work unless you are life guard in a swimming pool...
