To wear shorts to the office?

Does it look unprofessional? I’m not really a dress/skirt kind of person.

I work in a corporate environment - but people do wear trainers, T-shirts etc

To wear shorts to the office?

No, definitely not.

I’m all for smart casual in a corporate environment and regularly wear dresses that I would also wear on a weekend, but no way to those shots. That’s crossing the line of what’s appropriate.

edwinbear · 21/06/2022 09:27

And when you get to the office and take your blazer off because it’s too hot, you’ll look like a grown adult in a PE kit 😁

@purplemunkey nailed it 😂

Blowthemandown · 21/06/2022 09:39

I used to wear a tailored shorts suit in the 90s.

Not tight like those in the picture though - also at least as long as the skirt suits. Very smart. Like looser chino shorts with a turn up. Plenty on offer at Freemans, Asos, Boden or whatever?

Lycra shorts????? Come on now!

Tailored, belted shorts are popular right now and can look professional . Something like this or maybe a bit longer

They're stunning.

worriedatthistime · 21/06/2022 10:04

Out office dress code is nothing to tight and not too much flesh showing / no flip flops
Knee length shorts would be fine but not cycling shorts

Hillarious · 21/06/2022 10:17

They wear them in Bermuda, but they're proper tailored shorts, and worn with long socks!

Diverseopinions · 21/06/2022 10:33

However, you are very good looking and, if you were a bit taller, I'd assume you were a fashion model for Next, so some of the less generous posts about your being clueless might be motivated by a bit of unconscious jealousy.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/06/2022 12:03

We are very casual now in our office but shorts are still not allowed.

GoodThinkingMax · 21/06/2022 12:34

In addition to looking unprofessional, wearing leggings shorts like that all day is not good for genital health either I should have thought.

Skirts are soooooo much cooler in hot weather, even than shorts.

It's the only link you've posted!

But the OP didn't post that link....

I agree. @hellomynameisshark is being eyes wide open goady as fuck.

Faux incomprehension.

What link? I didn't post a link! Despite admitting seeing a link. They're not lycra 🤦🏻‍♀️

FFS.

She didn't post the sodding link! Someone else did and she quoted it.

What's wrong with linen trousers? They get a bit creased but they are cool in hot weather and smarter than jeans.

What am I supposed to wear instead? Some hideous dress? I'd say they're the refuge of those who've given up, if you are going to be so rude. We all have different tastes in clothes.

Shorts are ok if longer and smart. And you don't need a tailored blouse or blazer with them unless your employer has a stuffy dress code but in that case you can't wear shorts anyway.

Why would the only other alternative option to linen trousers be an hideous dress?

I have to agree with the poster who said they are for people who have given up. Very much the look of a mum.

Thank you!! I’m so confused over this being accused of posting a link thing.

@hellomynameisshark as ever people don't bother reading what is right in front of them.. drives me mad. Still, I would not suggest you wear shorts like that in a corporate environment, whilst clothing styles have relaxed over the years I don't think they are that relaxed and as others have said a tailored pair of shorts would be better than those style which look more like gym shorts.

We are allowed to wear them in the NHS in summer. They are ugly though. On the knee horrors.

VapeVamp12 · 21/06/2022 12:50

Lol I'm literally sat in my office now with cycling shorts on - i have a short dress on

motogirl · 21/06/2022 12:51

Yes, cycling shorts belong in the gym as do leggings (unless they are worn under long tunics or dresses) tailored shorts half way to the knee look fine

motogirl · 21/06/2022 12:54

@VapeVamp12

I have cycling shorts under my dress too, for chub rub Grin. I wear pretty short dresses too sometimes

10HailMarys · 21/06/2022 12:58

I really like the outfit in the picture but for the office I wouldn't go for shorts that are skin-tight like that, personally.

But I think the length of them is fine! If the goal is to look professional for a smart-casual or casual office, then I think a more tailored pair, or ones that were slim-fit rather than skin-tight, would be fine. There was a sudden craze for 'city shorts' one year when I was younger and women definitely wore them in the office. I loved them, they were ideally comfy for summer but looked smart with a belt and a top like the one in your photo. I'd happily wear something like that to the office I work in now.

I guess it really depends on your own office, but if people can wear t-shirts and trainers I would have thought smart shorts would be no problem.

[whispers] I also hate linen, OP.

Thatswhyimacat · 21/06/2022 13:01

Belted tailored shorts that don't go too much above the knee are fine, but yeah, not cycling shorts unless you work in fashion. Tailored shorts would work equally well with the outfit you posted?

I'm being reminded of my old manager who used to cycle into work and get changed at the office. I really fancied him and seeing pretty much everything in those shorts 😅oh my.

Oh yes, love a cycling short under a dress! Ideal for chub-rub/sweaty leg issues and I actually think cycling shorts under a short dress look quite cute when they poke out a little bit underneath.

xogossipgirlxo · 21/06/2022 13:06

I love the outfit, but it won't be seen well at work I'm afraid :/

NippyWoowoo · 21/06/2022 13:15

OP: does this look unprofessional?

Proceeds to argue with everyone who rightfully says that they are.

Why ask? You've shot down every alternative suggested.

Wear them then, you certainly don't seem to care what anyone else thinks

Fluffymule · 21/06/2022 13:21

I think if you want to wear cycling shorts and a blazer to work like that you should also commit to holding one arm above your waist at all times in the office, hand at shoulder height or absently touching your hair- like every other wanna-be influencer nailing the not looking at the camera, no honestly this is totally just a one take breezy photo of me acting natural and not a carefully curated, multi shot, filtered image I might delete should I not get more than 200 likes on the gram.

Seriously though, that sort of cycling shorts as day wear look has been an instagram cliche for years now. It’s not inherently a bad look, and would be absolutely appropriate in many circumstances if that was your style, but definitely not most corporate environments.
