To wear shorts to the office?

Does it look unprofessional? I’m not really a dress/skirt kind of person.

I work in a corporate environment - but people do wear trainers, T-shirts etc

To wear shorts to the office?

The first photo is nice, but at least in my workplace, you aren't allowed to wear leggings/legging shorts unless it's underneath a skirt or dress. So they can be on show, but in an in lieu of tights sort of way.

FWIW, the Reiss shorts linked (I know you didn't post the link, OP!) are ridiculously overpriced and not all that nice. You can get slightly baggy, plain black shorts anywhere for much less (but I wouldn't). I think knee-length tailored shorts are quite nice for work.

SleeplessInEngland · 21/06/2022 13:32

Wear whatever's allowed and is most comfortable.

KvotheTheBloodless · 21/06/2022 13:59

Nobody is this clueless - of course you shouldn't wear cycling shorts in a corporate environment, it's not appropriate (whether you're male or female). Nobody wants to see that much of a colleague!

As others have suggested, if you really want to wear shorts go for tailored city shorts.

VapeVamp12 · 21/06/2022 14:46

I work in a corporate environment and I said above, I have cycling shorts on under my dress which is quite short. You can see them.

My boss currently has shorts on, another one is in jeans and a t-shirt. I don't think it looks unprofessional. We're working and comfortable.

NippyWoowoo · 21/06/2022 13:15

OP: does this look unprofessional?

Proceeds to argue with everyone who rightfully says that they are.

Why ask? You've shot down every alternative suggested.

Wear them then, you certainly don't seem to care what anyone else thinks

What was the alternative suggests that I shot down?

Linen because it makes me heave? Not sure which other suggests I’ve actively “shot down”

When people cycle to work, at the end of the day they might go and change into their cycle shorts and maybe leave their office top on while they finish up and collect their stuff.

That's what the photo looks like. I cannot imagine that they would feel more comfortable than a loose skirt, dress or trousers - basically anything NOT skin tight!

MsOllie · 21/06/2022 16:10

We are allowed (my male boss wears shorts)
But in his words "if you turn up looking like Kylie, we are revoking the shorts permissions"

TheOrigRights · 21/06/2022 16:13

and if she takes her blazer off she's pretty much going to look like my son when he took up ballet aged 4 - wee black cycle shorts and a white t.shirt tucked in.

GoodThinkingMax · 21/06/2022 16:25

I have to agree with the poster who said they are for people who have given up. Very much the look of a mum.

You clearly haven’t looked very hard, or maybe you don’t have the budget, for high-quality, well designed linen dresses or trousers.

And your comment about mothers as inevitably unstylish is unpleasant and ignorant.

apintortwo · 21/06/2022 16:29

No, it's not appropriate OP

Thatboymum · 21/06/2022 16:35

In my office it’s sweltering with crap air flow and no air con and we aren’t allowed to wear shorts as it’s unprofessional but skirts are ok and every year the men protest and wear kilts when it’s hot 😂

sunlovingcriminal · 21/06/2022 16:37

If your office is actually a gym- then crack on. Otherwise, take heed of the posters on here and find a plan b).

Don’t worry about my budget girly. I just wouldn’t be caught dead in linen anything. I have standards.

There you go 😂 still arguing. Wear the damn cycle shorts and report back to us on how it went down

It's a fair question. You are obviously very junior at work if you are asking strangers about what is appropriate to wear for work, so more likely an admin assistant than a chief financial officer.

Chanel do some very nice jackets with linen; they are less popular here than in France I think, but I've still seen a few at work.

If folk had commented “she looks desperate for attention” about the cycle-short wifey, I’m sure they would have been told women can wear whatever they want, that they are dressing for themselves, not for others etc.

so why slag off women wearing linen trousers? fair enough, you don’t like them - but there is a big difference between not liking something and ascribing negative qualities to those who do like it.

Do all mothers dress alike? Of course not. That’s just silly. And that sort of comment gives the definite impression of someone just dying for a reaction. You can envisage that person, shuffling impatiently from foot to foot as they wait for a response, looking for all the world like a five year old needing a pee

Handsnotwands · 21/06/2022 18:08

Why do people keep talking about their DH’s offices? Confused Why are is anyone having conversations with their spouse about how people dress where they work?

@hellomynameisshark "Don’t worry about my budget girly. I just wouldn’t be caught dead in linen anything. I have standards."

Well so far the standards you've shown us are primark quality Lycra cycling shorts, so I'm not sure your standards are anything to be excited about.

Definitely not junior and definitely on a six figure salary but thanks for your advice.

Chanel is more for the older mature woman in my opinion so it’s a hard pass from me.

I pulled a photo off Pinterest to give an example of an outfit. I didn’t do extensive research into the brand or quality of clothing the model was wearing - to post on an Internet forum.

I personally don’t shop in Primark but I also don’t judge those that do. Also those shorts don’t look Lycra in that photo at all.

But weird that you think I’d want attention but then give me that attention. So I got what I wanted in the end and that’s all that matters ya’ll.

No, if that were the case you would not be asking strangers on here about what you can wear to the office. If any of this is true, and given the outfit that you are wearing you are either just starting out or are very junior.

Ooooh sorry Mr Tax Man didn’t know you had direct access to my income.

And yes I do earn six figures. You saying “no” doesn’t make it untrue.
