To leave 4 year old alone in pool

CatTurd · 20/06/2022 11:48

With armbands on and me sitting at the side on a sun lounger.

Just curious because I noticed all the other parents getting in or
following their 4/5/6 yr olds around. Maybe I’m being too relaxed.

Too relaxed yes

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2022 11:50

I wonder why they are supervising their very young children by water, could you think why?🙄

MarysShackles · 20/06/2022 11:50

Yep you need to be in the pool with a 4 year old.

Wnikat · 20/06/2022 11:50

Of course I wouldn’t let my 4 year old go in a swimming pool on his own, no.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 20/06/2022 11:50

I'd say that's too young to be without you unless you are eyes on him the whole time. Assuming he can touch the bottom/is in a confined space/can't get elsewhere easily?

TokyoSushi · 20/06/2022 11:51

I think if you're watching like a hawk and very close to the side of the pool then yes.

Reading a book while they go off into the pool, then no.

heldinadream · 20/06/2022 11:51

Young children can drown in a couple of inches of water very rapidly, let alone an actual pool.

CatTurd · 20/06/2022 11:52

No need to be rude.

I was supervising from the side

ComDummings · 20/06/2022 11:52

Absolutely don’t. I was in a pool where a small child of 3/4 slipped out of her arm bands and almost drowned while her parents sat next to the pool chatting and not paying attention. My DH grabbed her and put her on the side. If we hadn’t been nearby she’d have been dead.

LibraryFairy · 20/06/2022 11:52

Our local pools all have signs saying adults should be in the pool with under 5s and keep within arms reach, so yes I think you're being too 'relaxed'.

MrsVeryTired · 20/06/2022 11:53

Watching like a hawk, yes.
Reading a book, no.

Shortname · 20/06/2022 11:53

You sitting at the side 100% focused on 4yr old and ready to jump in immediately if required is ok I think. 'On a sun lounger' suggests that's not the case so I voted unreasonable.

orwellwasright · 20/06/2022 11:53

Armbands are shit. They restrict movement and shouldn't be used as a buoyancy aid.

That you think your kid is safe because they're wearing armbands suggests you don't know a lot about water safety tbh.

Discovereads · 20/06/2022 11:53

Yes you are being way too relaxed. You need to be in the water supervising him. I think most pools also have the rule of one adult per child until age 8.

TamSamLam · 20/06/2022 11:54

I might in a small private pool just our family (pretty sure I'm better at running/jumping than swimming in an emergency), with other people around absolutely not, too many obstacles to get to her.

LovelaceBiggWither · 20/06/2022 11:54

I did that when my 4yo was the only person in the pool but I wasn't reading. It's beyond unsafe to do what you describe. They can drown so fast.

Yodaisawally · 20/06/2022 11:54

I wouldn't. I would sit on the side of a smallish pool. Mine were out of armbands at that age but far too cocky with it. Reading by the pool, when they are old enough to go to the pool by themselves which is 8 around here and they are competent swimmers.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/06/2022 11:56

Can they swim? My 4, nearly 5 year old has lessons and I'd still probably get in.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 20/06/2022 11:56

I have a pool, no little kids are allowed in it without an adult, and no bigger kids allowed in unaccompanied. Children's can drown very quickly, you are being too lax about this.

Stevienickssnickers · 20/06/2022 11:59

I once had to jump in a pool to drag a young girl out because her parents were too busy sunbathing to notice she was in trouble.

Get in the pool.

Bunnycat101 · 20/06/2022 11:59

I think you’re being totally irresponsible I’m afraid. My 6yo is a good swimmer for her age but I’d never let her in the pool without an adult being in with her. She’s too unpredictable, likes jumping in, going under etc. also have a 3yo and there is no way I’d not be in with her.

FAQs · 20/06/2022 12:02

When I was on holiday I’d sit on the side with my legs dangling in the water watching. But constantly watching.

Coughee · 20/06/2022 12:02

Too relaxed. Even watching from the side. I'd want to be arms reach of a child that young in water.

Bunglemom · 20/06/2022 12:03

after saving a 4 year old from drowning last week due to her mom sitting on the sun lounger not really paying attention then id say no get in the pool with them!

Dixiechickonhols · 20/06/2022 12:04

Yes under 8 need an adult in water with them. Armbands aren’t lifesaving they are an extra to supervising. I wouldn’t risk it. If they have those splash pads they can run in those whilst you watch.
