Couple murdered by neighbour over parking row

Can't help think of the poor couple who were stabbed to death by their neighbour over a parking space last year. Their children were in bed asleep.

The neighbour has been found guilty this week. He was never going to get away with it. He went home and phoned the police and told them what he had done. Very hard to understand how he couldn't have cared less about their children or his own children or going to prison.

Anyway got me thinking have you ever had really terrible arguments with neighbours that escalated. Have you ever put up and shut up because you were or are afraid of the neighbours and don't want any trouble.

Apparently parking spaces are really high on the list of neighbour arguments. I guess you never really expect to be killed but these days does it make you wary?

Normal nice neighbours would have stopped parking inconsiderately if they knew it was causing issues for their neighbour. They didn't deserve to die of course, but they were not good neighbours.

@XelaM No ‘but’s’. They did not deserve to die, end of 🙄

She knew that she's shouldn't be parking there, she knew that it was causing issues for her neighbors, she just didn't care. So, I absolutely do think that the Chaples escalated the situation too.

@P205 Nope, absolutely nothing they did even begins to justify their murders.

I don't think it justifies it but it does explain how it escalated. I'm pretty sure if someone came on MN and said their neighbour was making it impossible/difficult/dangerous for them to park in their own space they would get lots of support and the neighbours would be considered in the wrong. No one would suggest killing them but people would understand the issue.

Neighbours across from us have now got 3 cars and one parking space, their teenage daughter parks her car in front of our house, no issue, sometimes she parks so close to our drive that we need to do a complicated manouvre to get off the drive. I know she doesn't mean it, I'm sure if I raised it with her she'd move back but she's a nice kid, we are retired so not rushing out to work every morning so we let it go. If I was working fulltime and it was causing me hassle every morning I would ask her to park a bit further back and I wouldn't be impressed if she ignored me. I definitely wouldn't kill her but I would be upset.

Like I've already said, it wasn't the parking two cars on the drive that Reeves objected to, it was her parking her car on the road next to the gravel section.

When the video of him telling her she 'couldn't park there' this was taken, that's what she was doing.

Then Colin Reeves paved over a section on the gravel which you can see on the photos from after the murders.

This meant that
a) the gravelled space was no longer big enough for a car to park next to

b) Reeves and his wife could squeeze both of their cars on to their space and the paved over section.

That's when Mr Chapple bought a much smaller car and they started to put both cars on their own space.

That makes sense, SavoyCabbage.

Absolutely no one is saying that anyone deserved to die here. Quite the opposite. It was a stupid petty argument that escalated into something horrific and tragic.

I especially feel sorry for the kids who have to grow up without parents because of the stupidity of a parking space.

It's all just such a shame and such a waste. Sad

By the way, Where did you read that SavoyCabbage?

There's also footage of him at the beginning of the dispute calmly and politely explaining to her why it was causing problems when she parked there. She knew that she's shouldn't be parking there, she knew that it was causing issues for her neighbors, she just didn't care. So, I absolutely do think that the Chaples escalated the situation too.

And she calmly explained why she was parking on the road. You can see other cars have parked on the road as well. Both you and CR appear to be singling her out.

The whole thing seems very confusing and at the end of the day a terrible tragedy.

It's tragic, and so are all the other cases linked.

I agree about developer greed. Tiny new estates with minimal parking. New build apartments that don't have any parking etc.

Equally you have to look at the self centered attitudes of people. You see it on here all the time, 'I'll do what I like in my own home and garden'. There seems so little tolerance nowadays.

The "planning" (what a joke) system is to blame as well - as it sets minimum densities and in some cases crazy low levels of parking provision. So encourages overcrowding and disputes.

Not at all! From what I've read the dispute was mostly between Jennifer and Reeve's wife, Kayley. I think it was a petty dispute and it escalated between the two of them, and then Collin got involved too. Apparently, the police had been called on multiple occasions as well. I think the whole thing is horrific! I just don't agree that the parking dispute was one-sided. Both families were being unreasonable with the parking issue. Collin just took the whole thing to a barbaric level which is why he has rightly been jailed for a very long time. My point is that is it really worth all this over parking? Maybe people should try and be more considerate AND more tolerant of each other.

I can't remember now, but I have followed it closely because it was so similar to what happened to us.

Absolutely learn to talk properly to one another. His foul mouthed rant to her just shows he couldn't get his point across with swearing. More people need to go on assertive Ness courses. You don't get anywhere by swearing keep calm and try and get your point across.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’ve been through something similar. 💐
