Couple murdered by neighbour over parking row

Can't help think of the poor couple who were stabbed to death by their neighbour over a parking space last year. Their children were in bed asleep.

The neighbour has been found guilty this week. He was never going to get away with it. He went home and phoned the police and told them what he had done. Very hard to understand how he couldn't have cared less about their children or his own children or going to prison.

Anyway got me thinking have you ever had really terrible arguments with neighbours that escalated. Have you ever put up and shut up because you were or are afraid of the neighbours and don't want any trouble.

Apparently parking spaces are really high on the list of neighbour arguments. I guess you never really expect to be killed but these days does it make you wary?

It's terrible what happened to the couple. I wonder if he now feels remorse. To have destroyed their Iives, and to lose his own freedom for life.

But why did their sharing the one parking space annoy him? I don't understand.

Maybe it made it hard for him to use his space? It can be something quite trivial but once it starts to cause a problem it can escalate out of all proportion. Obviously killing two people over a parking space is out of all proportion.

The papers reported that whilst the Chapples' parking on the road did make it harder for CR to park his own car in his space, it wasn't very inconvenient for them.

*them meaning CR and his wife

This video makes it look (to me at least) impossible for him to park. I can see why he was annoyed.

@Narwhalelife

That's horrific. Your poor dog Flowers

Rural location, few near neighbours sounds blissful to me after an awful string of neighbours, and I'm far from being the worst off reading this thread.

Could you explain a bit more? I can't tell from that video which is his vehicle.

We live on a street with really limited on-street parking and no ability to create parking in front gardens as they're tiny. Surprisingly it causes minimal issues - people really try their best to leave spaces in front of each house for that house and put other cars for 2 car families at the end of the street where there's the sides of the houses on the next street (who have driveways). Surprisingly it works pretty well and people are flexible if they know someone's getting a delivery or similar - but the core of the street is a very long established community who get to know new residents fast and we know that, living somewhere with crappy parking like this, we've either got to get along or it's going be hell to live in.

My dh's uncle was stabbed by his neighbour over a longstanding argument over the neighbours dog shitting in their garden. They had the first floor flat and the garden was theirs. The neighbour was in the top floor flat. His uncle had a heart attack when he was stabbed and died in his brother's arms. The whole thing was witnessed by dh's 9 year old cousin who testified in court. He had two very young sons at the time that were away to a family wedding where he was supposed to join them.

Meraas · 20/06/2022 10:15

@Sceptre86 that's awful. I hope the neighbour was jailed?

I could be composed wrong, but the way it looks to me is that they have parked two cars back to back (the black and the light blue cars) and the neighbour can't get into his empty parking space because of the light blue car blocking his access. I could be completely wrong though

XelaM · 20/06/2022 10:20

Yeah, I don't think that's right. They do have one allocated parking space each, so the Chapples only parked 1 car on the street. I don't think the black car is theirs.

I thought the whole dispute started because they were parking two cars back to back on their parking space? I'm sure I read that in the papers. I haven't followed the evidence that came out during the trial though

I haven't followed the evidence either. I think the issue was the Chapples parking one car in their allocated space, and one on the road / undesignated spot. From the Guardian:

Relations between the two families had been cordial until the Chapples got a second car. Each house on their street had only one designated parking spot and Jennifer Chapple began to park on an undesignated area that did not block Reeves’s spot but made it slightly trickier for him to manoeuvre.

The "undesignated area" is one car behind the other. I'm sure I have seen a diagram of this. I will try to find it

I don't know why the video had a black car and the picture a white car, but the two cars parked back to back are the victims' and Reeves' is the one next to them.

They parked two cars in one space so one was overlapping into the road abit making his access harder.

There was the additional thing that he thought his car had been hit by them.

People just need to get together about things and keep their cool.

It dosent seem worth it now he will spend a significant time in prison and all kids involved have been affected badly.

That looks like the white car is parked over the footpath between the parking spaces and the houses. I would think that they weren't supposed to park like that but not worth killing people about.

SavoyCabbage · 20/06/2022 10:46

It was because she was parking her car on the street over the back of a gravelled area that was next to Colin Reeves space. As the street is so narrow, this would have made it harder for him to get his car in and out. You can see the gravel but on the Ariel photos.

They did also park both cars on their space, in fact they even bought a smaller car for Mr Chapple in order to be able to do this. The used to have a people carrier.

Ah, thanks Xela. I can see why the nose to tail parking would be annoying, but it doesn't look like it prevented the Reeves' from accessing their own drive.

Anyone else think if he had stabbed Mrs Chapple alone then he would have got away with it on the grounds of MH issues?

I think the bastard faked giving his army serial Id when arrested, to make it look like he had PTSD

You are silly. You can’t fake your army ID and you can’t pretend to have PTSD. It has to be medically diagnosed.

ObjectionHearsay · 20/06/2022 10:49

My elderly relatives neighbour is bat shit.

She screams and shouts at all the children for playing in their own back gardens, it's got to the point where the children are now too scared to play in their back gardens, they also can't play out the front gardens because she shouts at them then too. She also demands to be able to park outside her house so knocks all the neighbours doors demanding they move their cars so she can park there. People oblige because they just can't be arsed with her drama and attitude.

So basically she's rewarded for her poor behaviour. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well no @pinkstripeycat she’s not silly, he was silly to try and think that that was how he was going to literally get away with murder but her point still stands that if he just killed the female he probably would’ve got away with it.
