Couple murdered by neighbour over parking row

Can't help think of the poor couple who were stabbed to death by their neighbour over a parking space last year. Their children were in bed asleep.

The neighbour has been found guilty this week. He was never going to get away with it. He went home and phoned the police and told them what he had done. Very hard to understand how he couldn't have cared less about their children or his own children or going to prison.

Anyway got me thinking have you ever had really terrible arguments with neighbours that escalated. Have you ever put up and shut up because you were or are afraid of the neighbours and don't want any trouble.

Apparently parking spaces are really high on the list of neighbour arguments. I guess you never really expect to be killed but these days does it make you wary?

Sorry I meant "solved" not investigated.

We (or our house really) were placed under police protection for a while due to attacks on my family. Beaten up, car stolen etc. Never actually got to the bottom of why they took such offence, but then we moved away and it stopped.

A Pertinent reminder to make sure that the backdoors locked at all times I’ve certainly been guilty of popping to put the washing in or out and not locking the door behind me thinking I’ll be going back out again in a minute.

This is presumably how he entered the house?
How did he know it was unlocked.

Calling the police is a waste of time. They don't bother to respond to women who are being harassed by a bloke....until he bloody kills them! Then ' lessons will be learned ' Quite when these lessons will be learned, no one knows!
My son's neighbour directly opposite him is a police officer who stood and watched two men brawling in the street from his front window while drinking a cuppa! He didn't even call his colleagues to attend.

Anyone else think if he had stabbed Mrs Chapple alone then he would have got away with it on the grounds of MH issues?

I think the bastard faked giving his army serial Id when arrested, to make it look like he had PTSD.

I don't understand why.

We have trouble with neighbour noise, really impinging on our lives. The thing is that I'd report them to social services if I didn't live here.

It's a couple with a son and daughter. The woman is all 'love you' when outside but telling the children to 'shut the fuck up' inside. She also says the man has a drink problem and she doesn't leave him alone with the children (I heard her telling someone), but she does leave them. The man is scary and aggressive and we've seen him grab the boy and chase the children.

We're planning to move

You need to report this to SS.
I know it's scary, but you can do it. I'm only saying this because I've done it myself (a few times) and the bloke involved was very intimidating. I just thought "if he's scary to me imagine being a child who can't get away from him" - safeguarding is everyone's responsibility!

Imagine if it was a child you care about and the neighbours were looking the other way.

Would never buy a house without a driveway or even a shared driveway. Wouldn’t put myself through that crap.

Problem is, a lot of new builds have very limited parking.

This idea of this was to help the environment, but many people have 2 cars now so very difficult.

Stomacharmeleon · 19/06/2022 20:39

Next door to me keep their 'space' with a shopping trolley and a chair.
They don't drive.

With him being an ex commando, he'd know how to enter a locked house.

Kind of inevitable when you have too many people crammed together on new build estates. It’s ridiculous. You’ll often see eight houses squeezed onto a patch of land fit for only two or three. And all so that greedy builders and developers can maximise their profits. The lack of room/personal space is making people more and more aggressive. Same thing happens in zoos when you put too many animals in one cage.

Yes it's a disgrace

NewOrleansOrDie · 19/06/2022 21:10

Their back door wasn't locked, they hadn't gone to bed. Maybe they had a cat or they had been out to the bin. You don't expect someone to scale a six foot fence at 9pm and come in through the back door.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 19/06/2022 21:11

I don't think it is inevitable due to people being cramped.

Most of the people who carry out these acts have some form of psychosis, the mental health care and inpatient facilities are very poor, leaving really dangerous people in public.

There are some people around here who are dangerous and unpredictable.

My family from rural Ireland had a major neighbour dispute with a man who had schizophrenia they contacted the Gardai many times.

He had a paranoid episode and battered his 21 year old neighbour to death with a crow bar, he had a long history of violent assaults.

We need more facilities to help and we need a better response from authorities before murder is committed.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 19/06/2022 21:14

Another neighbour case in the UK that comes to mind, the man who was terrorising his neighbours, he regularly entered their home through his attic into their home he had a listening device set up in her home.

We don't know whether it was locked or not it's not been reported

Call the council parking contravention team. We have a responsive one here. They come within an hour of being called.

Oligodendrocyte · 19/06/2022 21:28

It's tragic, and so are all the other cases linked.

I agree about developer greed. Tiny new estates with minimal parking. New build apartments that don't have any parking etc.

Equally you have to look at the self centered attitudes of people. You see it on here all the time, 'I'll do what I like in my own home and garden'. There seems so little tolerance nowadays.

New build apps have to have parking by law today

@SavoirFlair in my area of London if you park across a drive even if the owners tell you to, the council will give you a parking ticket. So I've seen disabled drivers visiting a family/friend being made to move their cars by parking attendants.

The annoying thing is there are not enough parking attendants to stop normal poor parking but just enough to ticket family and friends of households who don't ask for their help.

RedWingBoots · 19/06/2022 21:42

@dottypotter depends where you live.
There are some properties near me that aren't allowed a parking permit.

If they are houses they can have only one parking space.

If they are flats near a tube or train station, so within a 10 minute walk, they can be allowed none.

Was thinking the same about the new estates here. They're all crammed in like sardines, tiny gardens, minimal parking.

I disagree.

Firstly people manage fine in flats... I have 12 neighbours within a few metres of my door and can hear them etc. Really not a big deal to live in close proximity.

Secondly, most people would simply get pissed off about the parking. They don't violently murder people over it. It's not the property developers fault. It's the person who actively chose to kill people.

Marlaah · 19/06/2022 22:45

YANBU. It’s horrendous to read that a young couple were killed over a car parking space. People get very territorial over car spaces, land boundaries, trees etc. I’ve had neighbours laying claim to car parking spaces in communal car parks and turning nasty if I didn’t move mine. You’ve got to be very careful with some folk.
