Is it just me or is there something about Chris Packham. I've never really taken much notice of him before, but in another life I think I would!

OP posts:
choolaboola · 17/06/2022 09:01

OMG I have to turn the TV off when I see him! Can't stand him!

For what reason?

Madamecastafiore · 17/06/2022 09:06

Scary guy, he would definitely choose to kill and eat you over his dog if you got lost in the wild with him and starvation became an issue!!

Very unlikely to happen though? So no need to be scared.

Dogs are generally great company and so much nicer than some people, so I can see his point.

Dreadful man. Has incredibly blinkered views on countryside management, is often wrong and is very much one rule for him, another for other people.

motogirl · 17/06/2022 09:40

I think he's amazing, I don't agree with everything he says but I appreciate those who put their passion and beliefs above craving popularity. His speech on Alan Turing recently was really good too, spot on

Dunno, when you look at the idiots that manage the New Forest and what they’ve done to it, he speaks a lot of sense.

Me too, op.

I love that he and Michaela still work together - loved them both on the Really Wild Show when I was growing up.

I don't understand this whole thing about hating someone just because they have different views to you on a particular topic. Understandable if they're racist, sexist or homophobic but i have who friends have differing views to me about other topics. It doesn't make them awful people!

He's passionate, great at his job, principled (which is rarer than it should be in tv)..OK his humour and comments can be a bit a weird sometimes but so what?

Don't fancy him though (sorry, Chris).

I was less than impressed when I discovered his step-daughter seems to have got herself a BBC nature-related programmes gig. Nepotism at its finest not.

She's a qualified zoologist as was her mother. She's articulate and very capable presenter.
I hate nepotism but this doesn't seem to be the best example.

cottagegardenflower · 17/06/2022 10:05

I think he epitomises all the good and bad things about some autistic people. Passionate, compassionate, enthusiastic, caring but also very opinionated, black and white thinking and fixated on his pet subjects.

DH hates him because he doesn't support culling of certain birds, like magpies. DH has seen magpies systematically taking chicks and eggs from the smaller birds' nests in hedgerows. Unsurprising that small birds numbers are declining and magpies rocketing. Other causes too of course, but doesn't help.

And before anyone says you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person, I qualify CP with 'some'. He is quite similar to several AsC people I know.

No, there is something about him that I don't like.. and I can't even put a finger on it.
He just seems a little up his own arse.

I think once you know he has publicly stated he has Asperger’s, some of his comments and reactions make more sense .

CHIRIBAYA · 17/06/2022 10:19

I have great respect for Chris Packham, he has that rare quality in a human being called integrity. It's interesting that some of those who oppose his views resort to violent, cowardly tactics. If they really believed in what they were doing was right, why not just be mature and have a grown up debate; they are weak and pathetic and know it. He gives a voice to wildlife and he encourages others to speak out as well. A thoroughly decent human being in a world where they are in very short supply.

I think from what I know this was kind of accidental and not deliberate. During covid she was isolating with him, and they started to do a pod cast off their own backs- not BBC related. It was very popular and she was obviously very good- articulate, confident and very knowledgeable. Obviously BBC saw that and it’s popularity and she has gradually been doing more and more. She is good, very good , at presenting and we sort of forget that it is a particular skills that not everyone finds easy, - I compare her to Gillian who was really really stilted and stumbling through her first series or 2 of springwatch- at times quite painful. It took till last series for Gillian to be able to talk to the camera naturally and not in a rehearsed auto script read way (even though I know it is) . Meghan appears to make light work of that, a few hiccups but is clearly a “natural” in front of camera. bbc knows when it sees a good thing,

@LoonyLurcher speaks a lot of sense here.
Much of his claims have been proven to be incorrect and he is targeting certain species to the detriment of others.
A dangerous man in my opinion, very biased and has a large audience.

I think the ones firebombing his house, hanging dead animals on his fence and posting shit to him are the dangerous ones tbh

greywinds · 17/06/2022 11:08

Adore CP - had to come off Twitter as his was one of the many Twitter feeds I was slightly too interested in!

Nobody gets everything right, over a long career.

Nature is brutal - birds fight and kill each other all the time. One reason I prefer watching edited nature on tv....

Absolutely! Complete nutters, what on earth they thought they were doing who knows? But it doesn’t make what CP says true just coz some awful people disagree with him.

The world isn’t split into goodies and baddies and if one group is bad then the other is good.

Rubyupbeat · 17/06/2022 11:28

Something creepy about the guy that I can't put my finger on!

Hornbostel · 17/06/2022 11:29

Funny how people keep saying this about a guy who happens to have Asperger's.

augustusglupe · 17/06/2022 11:40

So do I, always have, but never really thought about it before.
I love that he's off kilter, his love of music and now that old punk look he's got going on. Very attractive.
I really enjoyed the series he did with his step daughter too which made me like him even more.

Eweknowwho · 17/06/2022 11:49

Looking forward to his defamation lawsuit again Country Squire magazine. The truth will out.

Clangyleg · 17/06/2022 11:58

I prefer the nightjar myself!
