I quite like Chris Packham

Is it just me or is there something about Chris Packham. I've never really taken much notice of him before, but in another life I think I would!

OP posts:
AmaryIlis · 17/06/2022 00:07

I once heard him do a talk about his autism and it definitely won me over. He was quite funny about it but it was pretty obvious that he'd had a really shitty time at school, and he still struggles quite a bit in terms of his daily life. And I liked his very genuine passion for nature and wildlife.

MinglingFlamingo · 17/06/2022 00:16

I'm sorry to be vain but it's his gilet thing, he always wears and probably in bed too. And it would be in a tent or a bird hide or something and I like a bit more comfort than that

It took me far longer than I care to admit that the designer Jenny Packham is his sister!

Really??? Well I never knew that!

WeasilyPleased · 17/06/2022 00:21

I bet he couldn't care less about what any of us think of him and that's why I like him

Malariahilaria · 17/06/2022 05:25

Watched a whole programme about him and his autism. He lives in a cottage alone in the woods even though he has a partner who lives elsewhere. He has been amazingly successful despite and because of his aspergers. My DS has been diagnosed with asd so I find him fascinating although my DSs version is very different but I admire Chris Packhams passion, knowledge and excitement about the animal world. Don't fancy him though.

RichPetunia · 17/06/2022 05:38

I felt the same years ago - nice, chatty guy - what’s not to like? Then I went to an event he was appearing at. Hardly anyone had gone alone and Chris Packham refused to get out his car. Waited around then gave up disappointed. Now have no time for him and the description up his own arse seems pretty accurate.

Awful, hypocritical, loathesome little man. And the BBC should be ashamed to employ someone who is the absolute opposite of impartial and uses their platform to push his own agenda.
And sexy? Eeewww

I think he's amazing, someone who loves nature and stands up for what he believes in. I also find the reactions above amusing.

Yes, this!

He also said that to tackle human overpopulation we need to empower women all over the world to take charge of their own fertility. Which is true.

Annoying for you maybe, but hes autistic so you have no idea if he was having a meltdown or a shut down and really wasn't coping that day. Something could have changed which made his sensory issues flare up. Imagine standing there trying to talk when you can barely open your eyes because the room seems so bright or the sound is feeling like a pneumatic drill in your brain.
Give the man a break. He copes amazingly well most of the time, he's allowed an off day.

Whatafustercluck · 17/06/2022 06:54

I really like him, but not in that way.

There's a guy at my work who is the spitting image of him.

carefullycourageous · 17/06/2022 07:03

Anyone speaking up against country 'sports' that involve the destruction of animals for fun is on the right side of that issue.

Also it's a myth that all farmers are custodians of the countryside, some are great and some are dreadful.

ExtraOnion · 17/06/2022 07:04

I love the guy.

I am also married to a (nearly) 60 year old birder .. some people think it’s sullen (he’s on the spectrum) . My daughter is 16 with “high functioning” autism - so I’ve found his autism programme fascinating.

He’s really principled, and don’t be intimidated by the “Ian Botham hunting & fishing” brigade, who kill animals for fun.

The persecuting of raptors neat shooting estates is a disgrace. This notion that the monoculture of a “grouse moor” is a positive thing, is just nonesense. I’ve seen the pictures of huge piles of dead birds being left to rot after a shooting party .. horrible.

.

DinoWoman · 17/06/2022 07:17

I like him, but not in that way. I've found him a little arrogant at times but I reckon that's partly to do with having no filter/less self awareness due to his ASD. I respect that he is passionate about wildlife and its protection.

malificent7 · 17/06/2022 07:24

He's lovely.

malificent7 · 17/06/2022 07:26

I DO think farmers should plant trees instead of rearing livestock but it ain't gonna happen. The need to earn a living will always conflict with nature.

sashagabadon · 17/06/2022 07:28

I’m a big Chris Packham fan. It’s amazing to me that one ordinary mum and dad living ordinary lives can produce two children that rise to the top of their respective industries ( completely and utterly different industries too) Nature v high end fashion!
Jenny Packham is also a massive talent.
I’d be very proud of both of them if I was mum Packham 😁

Porcupineintherough · 17/06/2022 07:30

LoonyLurcher · 16/06/2022 22:52

Just want to point out that I dislike hunting.

I’m not really sure why organisations like the RSPB are seen as good despite them trapping and culling animals to protect certain species, but when gamekeepers do it it’s bad. It doesn’t really make sense.

It does- if you just engage your brain a teeny, tiny bit. Gamekeepers damage the environment and kill wild animals - often rare and endangered ones - to build up populations of game birds for rich wankers to shoot. Not a noble calling.

BracedlnEndIessJanuary · 17/06/2022 07:34

I admire what he has achieved but would struggle to be in a relationship with him (watch his documentary Autism and me, it is an excellent insight). I hope my son ends up with a partner, who can be so accommodating.

ChessieFL · 17/06/2022 07:39

I love Chris Packham! I have ever since I got to be in the audience of The Really Wild Show as a child and got to sit right next to him. I don’t necessarily agree with everything he says (I don’t agree that we should stop putting resources into saving pandas) but I do agree with a lot of it and I admire how he stands up for what he believes in. The arson attacks/dead birds/death threats he gets are despicable. I also really like the programmes he’s done talking about his autism.

I love Jenny Packham’s dresses too, I wish I had both the figure and budget to wear them! I did know she was his sister.

Kertrats · 17/06/2022 07:41

I can see why someone who speaks their mind is attractive but as someone who's actually seriously dated guys like him-or to be accurate-the sort of guy he appears to me to be- I can tell you now it gets very, very wearing after a while.
Obviously I do not know him personally but it appears to me that he is a certain way.
Is that fair enough?
It's as if you have to become more masculine and literal so they 'get' where you're coming from.
It's a double-edged sword really.
Of course I'm not suggesting that you would like to date a guy like him, I'm just expanding the topic.
I'm sick to the back teeth of guys like that personally.
Sort of guy that gets women easily but if they've any sense they don't actually go out with.

Haha I bet you're a farmer or like to hunt (not that you have your own agenda of course). You sound very impartial though so well done.

Staynow · 17/06/2022 07:46

I grew up on a farm and not a single farmer i knew in the area cared about anything apart from profit. The game keepers round where I live now shoot literally anything that moves.

Chris Packham says it how it is and unfortunately a lot of people don't like the fact that he's telling the truth.

CMZ2018 · 17/06/2022 07:49

TooManyAnimals94 · 16/06/2022 22:11

It's nothing to do with the planet, it's his undisguised hatred of farmers, gamekeepers and anyone who actually works in the country, rather than fannying around in front of a camera.

Hear hear 👏🏻

No, there is something about him that I don't like.. and I can't even put a finger on it.
He just seems a little up his own arse.

Have a read on the neurodiverse mumsnetters board where we talk about this a lot.
Studies have been done that show that NT people dislike autistics and don't even know why.

I don't agree with everything he says but I quite like him. I fancied him on The really Wild show.
