Is it just me or is there something about Chris Packham. I've never really taken much notice of him before, but in another life I think I would!

I was less than impressed when I discovered his step-daughter seems to have got herself a BBC nature-related programmes gig. Nepotism at its finest not.

hanahsaunt · 17/06/2022 07:54

I think he's fab!

It does- if you just engage your brain a teeny, tiny bit. Gamekeepers damage the environment and kill wild animals - often rare and endangered ones - to build up populations of game birds for rich wankers to shoot. Not a noble calling.

This is exactly the problem though, that’s not the case.
Rare species numbers have increased.
Keepered moorland is maintained using methods that protect the land (eg cold (surface) burning small areas of old Heather, encouraging new growth - good for many rare species of bird and wildflower, as opposed to deep burning that damages peat and destroys areas of moorland, which is carried out by orgs such as rspb and council managed moorland, and poor practices such as topping red-listed (known areas with rare birds/wildlife) areas during nesting season, which is then blamed on gamekeepers, who very much work within the breeding cycles of ground nesting birds.

I’m not here advocating game shooting, but this is not a black and white issue, and there are definite, visible, benefits to wildlife.

Having said that, we live in a world where every issue is divisive and lacks nuance. Packham has proved himself to be ill informed on this topic time and time again, but that goes against the accepted thoughts, which leaves genuine positive effects on wildlife species in keepered areas ignored and skewed.

Porcupineintherough · 17/06/2022 08:00

@LoonyLurcher no sorry that's pure propaganda and complete nonsense. Burning the uplands fucks them and they become grouse deserts. Rewet them, get the peat bogs growing again, let trees come up the cloths- few grouse but lots of other things.

OldWivesTale · 17/06/2022 08:01

I watched him give a talk and I thought he was lovely- very intelligent, sensitive and articulate.

Reluctantadult · 17/06/2022 08:03

@Porcupineintherough well said!

I felt the same years ago - nice, chatty guy - what’s not to like? Then I went to an event he was appearing at. Hardly anyone had gone alone and Chris Packham refused to get out his car. Waited around then gave up disappointed. Now have no time for him and the description up his own arse seems pretty accurate.

Maybe he got too anxious. He is autistic. But in any case, anyone can get anxious.

I can see that happening with my own eyes though, gamekeepers in many areas are doing these things.
The poorest run areas are managed by councils, not by gamekeepers, and gamekeepers are blamed and vilified for it.

It seems that very outdated information is used as current. There are a growing number of keepered areas that do things very differently, with great results.

Well, that's not out of nowhere, I believe she does have a zoology degree. And it started during lockdown when she was living with him and they were making little daily videos, on Twitter, which my family liked very much. I'm sure she wouldn't be presenting Springwatch if she wasn't Chris Packhams stepdaughter because she wouldn't have been in that situation where she was making the lockdown videos but it's not as simple as "here's a relation, give her a job."

Awful, hypocritical, loathesome little man. And the BBC should be ashamed to employ someone who is the absolute opposite of impartial and uses their platform to push his own agenda.
And sexy? Eeewww

Detest the man after his support for corvids For 20 years we have had a growing number of house martins nesting on our house. The numbers had steadily risen until this bloody man forced through rules stating that birds like Jackdaws were to be protected. I had 15 jackdaws on the lawn yesterday and will once again have to watch many of the fledglings being massacred .The number of nests are now decreasing at an alarming rate

Lols this reminds me of my friend liking Nick Knowles and the various fascinations with Kevin McCloud and Phil Spencer.

HairyMcLarie · 17/06/2022 08:23

He hates humans. Doesn't like animals being called 'cute'. Adores his dogs. Loves his stepdaughter. He had a complete meltdown at the beauty of a nightjar.
He's my kind of man.

Farmers - who gave them that land ? And what do they do environmentally ? I live in a place that's mostly agricultural and there is no wildlife. It's all farmed . For profit .

And yeah I hate gamekeepers. Killing foxes and raptors to keep rich people in a hobby shooting pheasants they leave to rot ?

Love Chris packham. Always have . I like people with asd . And I like Especially interesting intelligent people who speak it like it is .

What do you mean ‘who gave them that land’ ?! They bought it at some point and if a farmer wants more land they have to pay for it.

You do know without farmers you wouldn’t eat? Unless you’ve got the ability to pay for and rent your own patch of land and grow your own food, then you wouldn’t need their produce. Which would kind of make you a farmer, right?

LouisCatorze · 17/06/2022 08:33

@StarTwins well that makes more sense. I was quite impressed by her so it makes sense that she has a zoology background. Even so, jolly handy to get a helpful hand from someone who has the insights and connections to facilitate her getting a job.

awaynboilyurheid · 17/06/2022 08:39

I think Megan who is Chris Packhams step daughter is brilliant on spring watch and as an other poster said she has a degree in the subject she is talking about. Nepotism is alive and well anyway on TV thinking of Barney Walsh pushed by Bradley, and Lorraine Kelly pushing her daughter Rosie, but at least Megan really knows her subject and comes across very talented and natural on tv, unlike some.
I really like Chris, the fact he is presenting on TV and is so knowledgable is inspiring for someone I know with ASD.

Sw33tP0tat0 · 17/06/2022 08:46

I think he’s fantastic. His step daughter is really good at what she does too. My Dh was saying what great a job she was doing for such a young presenter the other night. He had no idea they were related. You can see she’s highly knowledgable on her subject and has that same ease with the camera.

I loved that walk documentary he did too and I’m so grateful to him being open about his autism. Autism is a hidden disability, it always amazes me how limited we are as a society re supporting hidden disabilities.

balalake · 17/06/2022 08:46

I respect what he campaigns for, and having a young relative with Aspergers greatly valued the programme he did about his neurodiversity.

Greenginghamdress · 17/06/2022 08:49

He's lovely. Always liked him since I was young, when he was on the really wild show. I can't say I agree with everything he says, but he's intelligent, passionate about what he does, very interesting.

Some years ago I read an article that he tries to get The Smiths lyrics into his shows and felt that me and him could be kindred spirits ☺

Sw33tP0tat0 · 17/06/2022 08:49

Just to say she did a series with him first. Think it was a father daughter thing and she was clearly skilled in that. I can see why she progressed to Springwatch. Frankly I think she knocks spots off many presenters on tv, degree or no degree, related or not she is very good at what she does.

EpicMugs · 17/06/2022 08:53

He's like marmite, isn't he?

I probably don't know enough about Packham vs the landkeepers tbh but when one side firebombs the other's home, you have to suspect that side are the twats. He has my respect for not letting that deter him from doing what he thinks is right.

I also think Megan is knowlegdable, articiulate and has a great presenting manner so, whilst she may have got the job because she's his stapedaughter, she's also qualified for it - which is more than can be said for 99% of nepotism cases.

MyWorstIsGoodEnough · 17/06/2022 08:55

I really like him. He says if like it is and he couldn’t care less what people think of him. And I love how much he riles certain people. 🤭

AngelinaFibres · 17/06/2022 08:57

LoonyLurcher · 16/06/2022 22:47

He is, but his hatred of gamekeepers is hypocritical.

Yes part of the gamekeeper’s job is trapping some carnivores when numbers are out of hand, but this isn’t just for the sake of pheasants for wealthy shooters, they do an awful lot of work to conserve many species of wildlife, just like the RSPB did when they culled deer for the same reasons.

We live in a human infested country, full of people who need to eat and need to work, that’s not going to change any time soon. Packham’s take on it is that we should leave wildlife alone, forgetting that in doing that many species will go because they rely on a level of protection that is provided by the very people he is vilifying. As areas have been built up, wildlife habitats have shrunk and changed, meaning that some species need more protection (eg ground nesting birds) when other species (eg foxes) are thriving. Unless we all want to disappear off the face of the earth and allow the planet to be truly wild, we will need to carry on managing certain areas to maintain healthy numbers of species that would otherwise vanish.

I live in a gamekeeping area, in the last 15 years we’ve seen an upturn of ground nesting birds and waders, thanks to the year round work of the gamekeepers. Curlews, which I believe are technically endangered, are flourishing round us, numbers go up every year, thanks to combined efforts and monitoring of gamekeepers and farmers. We see buzzards, kestrels, red kites and other birds of prey on a daily basis - 10 years ago there were very few in our area. We have also started seeing migrating sea eagles in recent years.

Of course Packham has a point, but when he talks about farmers and gamekeepers, having worked on farms and lived in the middle of the countryside all my life, much of what he says shows very little knowledge of what actually happens. It’s like he’s decided on his stance and is sticking to it no matter what.

Beautifully put.

Pastaa · 17/06/2022 08:58

He's very much one track mind, very rigid and set in his ways and I'm not a fan of the Morrissey hair quiff. I also don't really like his voice and manner of speech but I can see that he isn't unattractive, decent bone structure and height, body looks athletic.. I can see his appeal. I've a shameful crush on Dominic Raab :(

Lonelycrab · 17/06/2022 08:59

I think he’s a top dude. Plus standing up to the bullies around where he lives in the New Forest gets him a lot of respect from me.

Really?
His voice and manner of speech are that of an autistic, as is his one track mind..
Would you say the same about someone in a wheelchair?
