To approach this mum with this warning?

Ok so I would NEVER normally approach a mum and 'point something out' BUT,

It's a hot day here (26 when I went to the park earlier) and I took the dog out for a walk in my local park. Took DS2 who's 6 months.

As I walked around the park and across some fields, there were two mums sat having a picnic of some sorts in the sun (no shade).

One of the mums obviously had a baby for a nap in the pram (I assume baby as bassinet attachment). To create some shade she had taken two muslins and draped them over the opening of the bassinet and clipped them with pram clips across the openings.

I'm pretty sure that this creates a hothouse type effect and can be quite dangerous. I actually had DS2 also napping and had a snuzshade draped over to stop the sunlight creeping in (black thin material with air holes to create shade but let the air flow).

I ummed and errd but decided I had to say something so really thought about the least offensive way to say it (I'm sure I could have found better!!).

Below is the convo. My friend thinks I was totally out of order to do this but I think I couldn't in good conscious not say anything

Me; gosh, it's soooo hot today isn't it? Nice to have some sun but poor little ones get so hot
Mum: oh yes, we're enjoying being able to get some sun!
Me: I'm not sure if it's helpful but I've found these snuzshade things really good as they let the air in so much more lightweight and breathable than muslins.
Mum: what do you mean?
Me: sorry, it's just I've read that muslins don't let the air through so can make babies hotter so I just thought I'd mention how great I've found this product as not sure if you're aware?
Mum: tell you what? Why don't you fuck right off and leave us the fuck alone
Me: ok, I'm literally trying to stop your child from overheating, that's all. Look it up.

I told my friend about the above convo and she said I probably came across as patronising and interfering. Yup, I probably did come across like that but that poor baby was probably roasting in there!

I'm sure I could have approached it better but WIBU?

You took a dog out in the heat . Misses point of thread

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/06/2022 18:09

What do they say. If you see something say something. When it comes to kids its everyone's business. However When you do speak out you're interfering. If you keep your snout out and turn the other cheek you're enabling and you don't care about kids welfare. You really can't win.
Take no notice OP you did the right thing.
Although I do agree it probably was a bit too hot for your dog to be out. His poor little paws.

ToppTotty · 15/06/2022 18:10

It doesn't matter how you came across. You did the right thing and although her instinct was probably to be defensive, she will hopefully go home and look it up.

BeautifulWar · 15/06/2022 18:10

Why do you keep mentioning the product by brand name?

Because that is what it's called? Quicker then 'holey black canopy'.

worraliberty · 15/06/2022 18:10

swimmingwiththefishes · 15/06/2022 17:57

@worraliberty Genuinely, why can't I walk the dog while out with the pram? DDog has fantastic recall and walks to heel amazingly when going by other dogs on lead.

Can I not walk the dog while out with the baby?

Because you're not in control of the dog, who no matter what its recall is like is still a dog.

If it acted out of character and attacked another dog/got attacked, or ran away you'd have to dump the pram and baby to deal with it.

zoopigi · 15/06/2022 18:11

As shown in the which article above, the snoozeshade does exactly the same thing you were warning the other mother about. Please do your research and mind your own child before sticking your oar in with "advise" to other mums

TwentyOneTwentyTwo · 15/06/2022 18:11

How do they walk dogs in countries where it doesn't go below 26 at night? Genuinely interested I don't know anything about dogs.

Tompariswasmyfavorite · 15/06/2022 18:11

You sound like a MLM person who is about to whip out a product to start selling them.

Like when I was putting (GP prescribed) cream on a skin condition and I got a forever living rep at work coming over to tell me all about how my prescription cream was bad for me and some aloe vera shite she was peddling would be much better for me

SoupDragon · 15/06/2022 17:21

You were patronising and interfering.

This

dawngreen · 15/06/2022 18:12

Like walking dogs at the wrong time of day in hot weather. She may assume nothing happened so carries on doing her way.

Furrbabymama1987 · 15/06/2022 18:12

You were interfering and patronising. It's bad enough coming from family but from a total stranger when she was minding her own business, I'm not surprised she reacted the way she did.

They don't, look up Indian pack dogs

pictish · 15/06/2022 18:13

You have joined the throng of people who approach random parents and offer unsolicited advice. So yabu.

”Should he not have a hat on?”
”You tell your mummy you should have socks on, yes you tell her.”
”He’ll catch a chill dressed like that.”

etc etc

I remember it. God fuck off.

Trivester · 15/06/2022 18:14

That sounded like a bad sales pitch. But bless you for trying.

BaaCake · 15/06/2022 17:28

And your poor dogs feet!

This. Prehaps people should le ture you about dogs and hest

Kingharoldshairstyle · 15/06/2022 18:15

I can see why you name changed. 😂

Can I not walk the dog while out with the baby?

Because it's you know... too hot!

You need to educate yourself!

swimmingwiththefishes · 15/06/2022 18:18

@PaddingtonBearStareAgain and if they did (as numerous people on here have handed my arse to me for it), I would have agreed! It's an unusual day for us, we walked through the fields in the park to the river (I live next to the park so not much pavement waking). But it absolutely isn't something I should do (-!: don't normall in hot days) and any other dog walker who approached me and told me that wouldn't have been told to fuck off....

@PizzaPatel Thanks so much for that article you posted.

I've just read it fully and am actually going to stop using the snooz shade (spelt correctly now) because of it!!

This is the chart the Which test did. Starting temp and then charting affects inside the pram when different covers are added.

It seems actually just the hood up and out of the sun is the best (I may have to change my walking route but sure I can manage!)

Interest charting of temps!

Why do all the temperatures drop from 40 to 50 minutes and then rise again between 50 and 60

I think this research may be a load of hooey

Heckythump1 · 15/06/2022 18:18

You shouldn't have had your dog out in this heat either... it's way too hot!

Taiyo · 15/06/2022 18:19

I'm more shocked that people think 26 degrees is really hot!

I think 26 is just a nice day. I would consider over 28 degrees as hot, but it often gets over 30 degrees where I live. 26 degrees isn't even body temperature.

Anyway, obviously not the point of the thread, but at least the OP tried. For what it's worth, people walk their dogs in the early morning and evening in summer here. No one would bat an eyelid at walking their dog at 26 degrees. Just make sure they are well hydrated and stay in the shade as much as possible.

Don't be ridiculous loads of people walk dogs with prams without a problem 🙄

Sswhinesthebest · 15/06/2022 18:21

I have to say that the first thing I thought was it’s a bit of a liberty saying about the baby when you were walking the dog in the heat, against all advice.

worraliberty · 15/06/2022 18:21

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 15/06/2022 18:19

Lots of people run across roads without looking too.

Doesn't make it any less dangerous.

swimmingwiththefishes · 15/06/2022 18:21

@SmartCarDriver I get it! That point has been made just a bit

But that's not what PP meant. She is suggesting I should not ever take pram out with dog

I'll have to agree to disagree with her...
