To approach this mum with this warning?

Ok so I would NEVER normally approach a mum and 'point something out' BUT,

It's a hot day here (26 when I went to the park earlier) and I took the dog out for a walk in my local park. Took DS2 who's 6 months.

As I walked around the park and across some fields, there were two mums sat having a picnic of some sorts in the sun (no shade).

One of the mums obviously had a baby for a nap in the pram (I assume baby as bassinet attachment). To create some shade she had taken two muslins and draped them over the opening of the bassinet and clipped them with pram clips across the openings.

I'm pretty sure that this creates a hothouse type effect and can be quite dangerous. I actually had DS2 also napping and had a snuzshade draped over to stop the sunlight creeping in (black thin material with air holes to create shade but let the air flow).

I ummed and errd but decided I had to say something so really thought about the least offensive way to say it (I'm sure I could have found better!!).

Below is the convo. My friend thinks I was totally out of order to do this but I think I couldn't in good conscious not say anything

Me; gosh, it's soooo hot today isn't it? Nice to have some sun but poor little ones get so hot
Mum: oh yes, we're enjoying being able to get some sun!
Me: I'm not sure if it's helpful but I've found these snuzshade things really good as they let the air in so much more lightweight and breathable than muslins.
Mum: what do you mean?
Me: sorry, it's just I've read that muslins don't let the air through so can make babies hotter so I just thought I'd mention how great I've found this product as not sure if you're aware?
Mum: tell you what? Why don't you fuck right off and leave us the fuck alone
Me: ok, I'm literally trying to stop your child from overheating, that's all. Look it up.

I told my friend about the above convo and she said I probably came across as patronising and interfering. Yup, I probably did come across like that but that poor baby was probably roasting in there!

I'm sure I could have approached it better but WIBU?

Totally agree on the dog front and I normally take him much much earlier on hot days but had doctors appt first thing with DS2 after dropping DS1 at nursery so was the first opportunity. We walked thought the fields and then along the river where he wades in it so was cool and wet. But completely agree it's not the norm to go that late!

Why oh why do people start a thread then name change straight after? Why do people do this? I keep seeing it recently!

You’re too nice🙂

Pullpverchuck · 15/06/2022 17:30

You shouldn’t of been walking the dog in that heat

Morph22010 · 15/06/2022 17:30

You sound like you were trying to sell her something. Maybe you should have said something along the lines of “I hope you don’t think I’m interfering as it’s only something I heard about myself recently but…

EvergreenForest · 15/06/2022 17:30

TakeYourFinalPosition · 15/06/2022 17:26

You'd have been better to just say that you had heard that two muslins wrapped like that can cause a greenhouse effect and increase the temperature... as it was, you probably got typecast as both judging them, AND trying to sell them something.

If you recounted that, it'd almost certainly be "a weird woman tried to sell us a snuzshade."

As an aside, I'd also heard a blanket over the pram can cause the effect but our health visitor said two muslins clipped together was okay; as the gap between the two would let the air through. We've never done it and I have no idea if it's true, but she may have been told the same thing...

But you'd have been better to just make her aware so she could check his temperature, rather than criticized.

If there was a gap I would totally have not approached but the muslins were clipped together as well as to the bassinet and in full Sun.

I can see how it's come off like I was trying to sell a snuzshade!! 😂

ClinicallyProven · 15/06/2022 17:30

I don't understand. It was too hot for a baby but OK to walk the dog?

PizzaPatel · 15/06/2022 17:31

theoretically I don’t think you were being unreasonable because if you fear for a child’s safety I’m sure it’s preferable to risk a bollocking than not say anything… BUT I’m not sure your snooze shade is much better than a Muslin. There’s only a couple of degrees in it. Not that the mum you were talking to was to know that unless she’d done (and disregarded) her own research.

Sounds like you were trying to sell the snuzshade thingie.

I would have told you to fick off too.

swimmingwiththefishes · 15/06/2022 17:33

Sorry! Yes namechange fail.

Interesting article above by which. Will have a read

You were patronising and interfering.

Very.

swimmingwiththefishes · 15/06/2022 17:34

So consensus is, ignore and carry on?

Fair enough my friend was totally right. I'm genuinely surprised so many wouldn't have said anything but I take the masses.

And I can see why it looked like I was trying to sell a snuzshade 😆

I see people doing this all the time it don't say anything because I assumed it was common knowledge and they were choosing to ignore the advice. Like people who use all those unsafe sleeping "nests", cot bumpers etc. Most people think "oh it won't happen to me" 🤷🏼‍♀️
Re the dog walking, 26°C is somewhat, but it's not too hot to walk a dog ffs! I have relatives in Texas where it's regularly 40°C in the summer. If they waited until it dropped below 26 to walk their dogs they'd be doing it at 2am, if at all!

Do you work for snuzzleshade?

Also why the name change? It makes it very hard to spot you're posts.

Saying something about the muslins, fine, yes it might not go down well but you've tried. It's how you say it though. And you sound like you're on commission.

Nein9 · 15/06/2022 17:36

I'm surprised so many people think you shouldn't have said anything, it's so dangerous, and overheating can kill babies very quickly. I think you did the right thing.

Thanks-I think I probably should have expected the 'fuck off' response!

The walk we do is through a field and song a river where DDog wades in it while we walk along the bank. I do usually go earlier on hot days but had doctors appt with DS2 first thing so couldn't

He's currently lying on the cold wood floor snoring

Is this whole thread a ploy to promote the wonderful Snuzshade? Because it sounds like it.

OneCup · 15/06/2022 17:37

I think you did the right thing!

itsgettingweird · 15/06/2022 17:37

I guess her reaction is because it does come across patronising.

However - with it getting hotter as the week goes on hopefully she'll do some research and realise that you were only trying to help and put her babies welfare before her own defensiveness.

Bellarima · 15/06/2022 17:38

Of course 26 degrees is too hot to walk a dog www.kcinsurance.co.uk/hub/2021/july/when-is-it-too-hot-to-walk-your-dog/

Ffs

Lo0ps · 15/06/2022 17:38

Why the faux confusion about the name? It's not like OP has said it and we've misheard. It's a snuzshade, not a snuzzle-anything. It's written clearly in her post.

Albgo · 15/06/2022 17:39

I would have thanked you if you'd told me.

Anonaymoose · 15/06/2022 17:39

Did she ask you why you were walking your dog in 26 degree heat?

^This!

That is an incredibly stupid thing to do. I work in a vets, we see animals die of heatstroke in lower temperatures. Please don't walk your dog in that heat. Very early morning or after sundown is when you should be walking a dog on hot days.

swimmingwiththefishes · 15/06/2022 17:40

@BaaCake Thanks and sorry

I guess I thought if I just pointed it out it sounded bad but if I approached it that I was sort of saying 'oh, did you know there's an alternative to using those muslins' then it would offend as much

But I guess it's either say nothing or say something and accept the consequences. No nice way give unsolicited advice! I'm glad I did say something as maybe she will look it up and won't do it again, even if she does think I'm a prime cunt 😆

I thought parasol attachments were the ideal solution. Or the uppababy pram hood I had had an extra sun shade you could fold down which was brilliant.

Because I couldn't remember what it was exactly and couldn't see the OP's post and didn't think it mattered so much what it was called
