Fuming at this guy in the supermarket

I was in the supermarket this evening and I went to pick up a bottle of fabric conditioner. It was from a good brand and very cheap on offer. A big bottle for a cheap price. It was also the last one of that particular fragrance on the shelf. As I reached out to take it from the shelf, I had almost got it when a guy came by the side of me and grabbed it. He then went over to a girl who I presume was his girlfriend and gave it to her. Presumably, she has asked him to get it for her. I was absolutely fuming. I picked my jaw up off the floor said 'You fucking cunt' and walked off.

AIBU for saying that?

I completely agree with you. I am usually very polite with everyone-until they are rude to me. I was told to 'get out of the way' by a man once (totally unprovoked) and I stupidly said nothing. I was too timid I guess.

Now I am done being polite and saying nothing to blatantly rude people.

But he wasn't rude, he didn't tell you to get out of the way. You couldn't have been reaching for it and he came over and got there first.
Calling someone a cunt for being faster than you is incredibly rude. And cunt is a vile word. I swear but would never use that word.
I mean this is over a bottle of fabric softener. I dread to think how you'd react to something really serious.

If I’d had a bad day, I’d easily have said that too OP! Wanker! 🤬 x

Someone did this to me once and actually had physically pushed me to grab the last one (it was a birthday cake and the only one my dc specifically had asked for).

I didn’t say anything instead I decided I would leave the trolley with dh and I (probably looking ridiculously suspicious) sneaked round following her till she left her trolley and I took the cake and went immediately to pay for it 🤣🤣

You are fantastic for doing that!

I'm kind of baffled. If you managed to get it first would that make you a cunt, given that he was reaching for it?

(Or maybe no one is a cunt (except for verbally aggressive people) and whoever picks up the item first is allowed to buy it?)

Leftbutcameback · 13/06/2022 20:32

@NotSur best post I've seen in ages!

I am amazed you even have to ask! he wasn't being a cunt - did he snatch it out of your hand? no! How was he supposed to even know you weren't just looking and considering which one to buy? Outrageous behaviour!

Because my hand was 2cm away ready to grab the bottle?

Wow- total overreaction. Mildly annoying yes, but It’s only a bottle of fabric conditioner- you need to get things in perspective

YetAnotherNameChange111 · 13/06/2022 20:34

All the posters saying you were rude are probably the ones who if you'd said nothing to the guy would be posting "Well if it had happened to me, I would have said this/that/a wonderfully cutting smart Alec withering remark that you have time to think about the other"

Doubt he'll do it again! Did either of them acknowledge your comment?

Iflyaway · 13/06/2022 20:34

I don't use fabric shit like that, it's all chemicals anyway.

Having said that, maybe you need to work on your assertiveness.

It's going to get a whole lot worse while shopping..... empty shelves and all that....

I'm not talking agressiveness, just self-empowerment. And politenesss while asking someone to help you reach tall shelves. I've never had a man refuse that request in a supermarket.

ItDoesMyHeadIn · 13/06/2022 20:34

Well I fucking love you! He WAS a cunt!

puddingandsun · 13/06/2022 20:34

Wow. I can't stand people swearing like that. No wonder kids as young as five pick up rude words. They just need to be at the supermarket!

So you are really saying that he wasn't being rude for snatching something quickly that he saw I was going for?

Based on the facts you’ve stated (i.e. obvious to anyone that you were taking the product and he has snatched it just out of your reach knowing you were about to take it), you are most definitely not being unreasonable and at the end of the day, such BS behaviour needs to called out.

Errr… but his was even closer?

Well, he was being a cunt. Maybe if we told men they were being dicks when they were being dicks we’d all be much better off?

Yeah, I can see that going real well for most women.🙄

The aisle was empty apart from the three of us and another man down the far end. I would never swear in front of children.

Yanbu. Not remotely over the top. He was a selfish cunt grabbing something that you were already reaching for. You were correct to call him a fucking cunt. All those think the OP shouldn’t have said this - society would be a lot worse if people were allowed to get away with this kind of shitty behaviour - they would think it was ok and then it would escalate. Where would it end? Shoving an old lady to get the last seat on a bus?

Speckledhen2022 · 13/06/2022 20:42

ReneBumsWombats · 13/06/2022 20:40

He smirked at me and his girlfriend looked a bit shocked. I am not sure whether she saw him grab it or not.
