Fuming at this guy in the supermarket

Speckledhen2022 · 13/06/2022 18:42

I was in the supermarket this evening and I went to pick up a bottle of fabric conditioner. It was from a good brand and very cheap on offer. A big bottle for a cheap price. It was also the last one of that particular fragrance on the shelf. As I reached out to take it from the shelf, I had almost got it when a guy came by the side of me and grabbed it. He then went over to a girl who I presume was his girlfriend and gave it to her. Presumably, she has asked him to get it for her. I was absolutely fuming. I picked my jaw up off the floor said 'You fucking cunt' and walked off.

AIBU for saying that?

Foul language isn't going to help!! You sound quite dreadful.

Thank you! It is shocking and disgusting how rude some people are. They absolutely need to be called out.

Is a person who calls a stranger a fucking cunt over a bottle of fabric conditioner so easily shocked and disgusted?

By rudeness?

Hallyup89 · 13/06/2022 21:06

All this over a bottle of fabric softener? Have you nothing better to do?

Galaxyinmypocket · 13/06/2022 21:07

I'm also with you OP. The type of reaction I would have had too, I'm going through a lot of stress at the minute and I have zero tolerance for shit like that.

Speckledhen2022 · 13/06/2022 21:08

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 13/06/2022 20:59

I liken it to the dickheads (yes I said it) who can see you reversing into a parking space and get in there before you. They can see what they're doing and don't give a shit. I absolutely am with you OP - probably wouldn't have said that word because I hate it but would have said something equally as strong!

It's seriously rude when people do that! thank you x

@Hallyup89 maybe just the straw that broke the camels back 🤷😅

Thank you! People have been rude to me for absolutely no reason and like you I just have zero tolerance for any shit now.

Yes. You should have been quicker.

BadNomad · 13/06/2022 21:12

If you want to use a derogatory word against a man, at least make it a male one. "Dick", "dickhead", "knob", "knobhead", "prick", or even the gender-neutral "asshole".

Cunt, bitch, whore, slut, slag etc are terms based on, and used against, women. Don't support their usage.

<feminist rant over>

But I agree, he was a dick.

Yes I am very shocked and disgusted at people who are rude for no reason at all. Totally unprovoked.

However, I cheer for people who are rude back.

He snatched it quickly when he saw I was going for it. Are you telling me that isn't rude?

Don't believe you.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 13/06/2022 21:14

The man displayed cuntish behaviour, all you did was point it out. That’s fine in my book.

PamelaD00ve · 13/06/2022 21:14

Well, he was definitely a cunt, but you lost the moral high ground by calling him one. A withering look and a "your mother would be ashamed of you" would've sufficed.

SofiaSoFar · 13/06/2022 21:15

He was a cunt, undoubtedly, but it's pretty grim to have said that out loud.

If you'd come here to post that you'd got to the bottle first and the man called you a "fucking cunt", I can imagine the replies.

NovemberRain2 · 13/06/2022 21:15

Gonna go against the grain here. He behaved like a cunt and you called him out on it.

Fair game. YANBU.

True. I'll call the next guy who tells me to 'get out the way', snatches something I am going for, shoves past me unprovoked a dickhead.

If what you said is true then fair enough, but I’m finding it hard to visualise. I don’t think anyone could be faster than me taking something from a shelf, unless they take it from me after I’m already touching it, cause it is a split second action. Was it up too high or too far back or were you struggling to get it?

hope the other scent is just as good

thedancingbear · 13/06/2022 21:13

Yeah, it's starting to make my antennae twitch now. Once it goes into "cause I'm a strong independent woman and he'd better recognise", it's nuked the fridge a bit.

Good one, though. Fucks, cunts and fabric conditioner. It sounds like the title of a first novel by a young, up and coming urban type. Full of social commentary.

If I had snatched a bottle a man or woman was clearly going for, I would understand why they called me a cunt.

OP - I think it's clear that the people that are saying you overreacted are either like the guy in your scenario (i.e. would do the same thing in his situation) or have not been in that situation and are simply the type that would just lay down and take it and tut about it afterwards (i.e. the people saying 'it's just fabric softener').

It doesn't matter if that man changes his behaviour or not as a result of what you said. At the end of the day you called him out on his lack of social respect and that's far better than saying nothing.

I appreciate some people saying 'what if there were kids' but that isn't the scenario you were in and unlike others I'm not going to project or assume anything other than what you said, i.e. there were no kids around and if there were, you wouldn't have said those words.

The bottle wasn't particularly difficult to get. It was on its own in the middle of the shelf. He saw me going for it and was quick.

Chaoslatte · 13/06/2022 21:56

You are so unreasonable I thought this was a reverse until I read all your posts. It's only fabric softener, I really could not get worked up about that. In fact I don't think there's anything in a supermarket that would induce that response in me. Yes he was rude but I would never speak to someone like that - you were much ruder!

CareBear50 · 13/06/2022 21:58

Your language was disgusting

You lost the moral high ground

Rosebel · 13/06/2022 22:04

Speckledhen2022 · 13/06/2022 20:35

So you are really saying that he wasn't being rude for snatching something quickly that he saw I was going for?

Yes. He got there first.
