To want to enjoy my garden!

DP and I have spent a large amount of money and effort building a tikki bar, built in BBQ and hot tub in our garden (it’s a proper one - not inflatable).

As the weather was so nice yesterday and DP’s kids were at their mums we decided to have a garden party/BBQ and invited a few of our friends round early evening.

It was so great to try out the new BBQ, hot tub, and the bar is fab - really fun and quirky decor, inspired by our holidays. Made everyone cocktails!

Only thing is, we’ve put in a new sound system, so wanted to test it. But before you criticise me, it’s not like we expect to be able to play loud music all of the time - only thinking in the afternoons and perhaps a couple of hours on Friday or Saturday nights when kids aren’t staying with us.

Anyway, at 10.30 (so not exactly middle of the night!) our neighbour came and screamed at us over the fence to turn off the music and to stop talking. We weren’t even playing it that loud at that point as had turned it down - so we could all hear each other talk over it without shouting.

She said if we don’t shut up she will call the police! FFS! We’ve only just put it in so of course we wanted to enjoy it.

I’m so angry! We’ve spent thousands and fully intend to enjoy our new outdoor space. We would not play music to the early hours but it really wasn’t that late.

AIBU to just keep using it and make sure music is off before 11? The thought of not being able to enjoy our lovely garden is heartbreaking!

I’m glad you’re not my neighbour.

11Hawkins · 12/06/2022 11:06

You sound so unaware. I'm glad your not my neighbour, if I was yours I'd be sticking my house on the market.

EvilPea · 12/06/2022 11:06

Has to be a reverse

Pollydonia · 12/06/2022 11:06

This reads like a comedian trying out a new character.

It’s at the back of the garden (which is quite long) - it’s not right under their window or anything. You can’t hear the hot tub from the house

You can't hear it from the house but other people might be able to hear that hum everywhere!

OldManRivers · 12/06/2022 11:06

But it shows an intention to play "good quality" music an awful lot, and people generally don't do that in their gardens because it impacts neighbours. I like to listen to the birds in my garden and I would hate to have someone else's choice of music playing that regularly. What if your neighbours do the same?

Heyisforhorses · 12/06/2022 11:07

Ah so you're the neighbours that everyone talks about in MN, was never sure if those threads were quite accurate or not. Soon as I saw tiki bar I knew there'd be music at night and selfish thinking involved.

JasmineFlowering · 12/06/2022 11:07

Reverse for sure. I feel the pain of the neighbour because we have a noisy one like that.

Mwnci123 · 12/06/2022 11:08

Christ I'd be vexed if my neighbours put in a garden sound system.

RockinHorseShit · 12/06/2022 11:08

@Lazypuppy thanks - yes I also thought that’s an acceptable time on a Saturday. If she had been a bit nicer about it I would have happily turned the music down. But she was literally screaming!

Sigh, are you really that fucking stupid Confused

If your neighbour wants to report you to the council (or police if your conversation is in anyway deemed offensive) they can & they will be lisended too & acted on as you are behaving like anti social twats.

Our neighbour is currently looking at court & an ASBO if he so much as makes a peep again, all due to behaviour very similar to yours. They don't just act on nighttime noise, but ANY repeatedly intrusive noise.

Do yourself a favour & learn to respect your neighbours right to peace too, not just when your kids aren't there 🙄

ArtVandalay · 12/06/2022 11:08

If this is for real, you sound like a nightmare.

I suspect it's a wind-up thread.

1AngelicFruitCake · 12/06/2022 11:09

I had a neighbour who played Sam Smith in her garden all the time (along with her singing along!) I hated it! I had the choice of either listening to it or going inside. Didn’t mind their music before, can’t stand it now!

RockinHorseShit · 12/06/2022 11:09

Oh & your garden decor sounds tacky & common as muck. Not something to boast about Grin

RhiWrites · 12/06/2022 11:10

My neighbours do this, it’s rarely an issue. They hot tub and play music past midnight on occasion.

Vastly prefer them to the previous neighbours who screamed at us for playing cards outside at 9pm on a Saturday.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2022 11:10

Just because the sound is good quality though doesn’t mean we would play it really loud!

except it was that loud because you say you'd turned it down so you didn't have to shout over it. If you have to shout, it is far, far too loud.

supertedlasso · 12/06/2022 11:06

I expected some negativity about the music but WTF is wrong with a hot tub?! Every one has one these days. Your just criticising for the sake of it now 🙄

Why the fuck should Op turn her music off at 9pm on a Saturday night ?

a) the way she’s describing it doesn’t sound loud

b) it’s a Saturday night! No ones gonna be in bed at 9pm on a Saturday night are they

I wanna come to your garden OP!

Izzyboo1234 · 12/06/2022 11:11

This thread can’t be for real?
But regardless a little perspective taking can be helpful. Out of interest why do you want these gatherings when your DPs children are not present? Is it because of noise etc? If so, there is one of your potential answers. How would you guys feel if your children were kept awake? I’m all for gatherings etc and it’s your garden, but a sound system? Unless you have a huge garden, miles away from other houses.

Thank you - I think we are pretty good neighbours on the whole.

It's fine! Because it's a proper hot tub!!! Not inflatable so you are allowed

choolaboola · 12/06/2022 11:13

Sounds awful. I'm a shift worker, the anxiety music until 2230 would give me. It's just inconsiderate to be honest! Get it you can't control your neighbours so I'm moving to the country - however you should be more thoughtful towards others.

Izzyboo1234 · 12/06/2022 11:13

Ps I can see the issue with a hot tub, bar etc. It’s reasonable to have gatherings- just the sound system seems a little OTT!
May be let your neighbours know it is happening etc time ☺️

MissStarry · 12/06/2022 11:13

Agree it’s the holy trinity of MN neighbour/garden issues - music, sexpond, bar/drunk noise after 7pm…

Hope you also have a penchant for 6am mowing, performative house-leaving, parking willy nilly over neighbouring drives with your 15 cars and have a constantly barking dog? 😂

Parties are absolutely fine - I think the neighbour was ott seeing as it was the first time.

You were probably a bit inconsiderate, but not doing anything illegal. You could (within reason) quieten down earlier though to avoid ongoing conflict.

Maybe invite them to the next one?

IHateWasps · 12/06/2022 11:13

The only positive thing about a hot tub is that you can drown your obnoxious, noisy party loving neighbours in it.

Thank you! Exactly - who goes to bed at 9pm?! It’s not like we’re having a rave FFS
