To want to enjoy my garden!

DP and I have spent a large amount of money and effort building a tikki bar, built in BBQ and hot tub in our garden (it’s a proper one - not inflatable).

As the weather was so nice yesterday and DP’s kids were at their mums we decided to have a garden party/BBQ and invited a few of our friends round early evening.

It was so great to try out the new BBQ, hot tub, and the bar is fab - really fun and quirky decor, inspired by our holidays. Made everyone cocktails!

Only thing is, we’ve put in a new sound system, so wanted to test it. But before you criticise me, it’s not like we expect to be able to play loud music all of the time - only thinking in the afternoons and perhaps a couple of hours on Friday or Saturday nights when kids aren’t staying with us.

Anyway, at 10.30 (so not exactly middle of the night!) our neighbour came and screamed at us over the fence to turn off the music and to stop talking. We weren’t even playing it that loud at that point as had turned it down - so we could all hear each other talk over it without shouting.

She said if we don’t shut up she will call the police! FFS! We’ve only just put it in so of course we wanted to enjoy it.

I’m so angry! We’ve spent thousands and fully intend to enjoy our new outdoor space. We would not play music to the early hours but it really wasn’t that late.

AIBU to just keep using it and make sure music is off before 11? The thought of not being able to enjoy our lovely garden is heartbreaking!

Jeez, if this isn't a reverse, I'd sell up and go and find somewhere more remote to live if that's what you want in your garden

FunLovinGal · 12/06/2022 10:46

But it’s brand new! Of course we would have a party to try it out. We’re not going to have parties every week! Surely the occasional party is ok and normal? It was only 8 guests.

I thought the law for noise cut off is 11pm? So we wouldnt do it past that.

It's like hated things in a garden bingo. Tell us you sent your kids out at 7am the next morning.

And have 3 windchimes

There's the law and there's not being a dick.

GreenCard · 12/06/2022 10:47

Well this is a reverse.
no one plays music in their garden and doesn’t realise that the noise level is exactly the same in the neighbours garden?

Ffsmakeitstop · 12/06/2022 10:47

Nice that you won't play loud music when your stepkids are there but bugger the neighbours and their kids. Aye right.

Christ you sound like a proper selfish tw@t Hmm

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 12/06/2022 10:50

I'm fine with all of those things apart from music via a sound system at 10.30pm. That's not neighbourly.

Everything I hate about having neighbours, why not put in a fire pit too and really piss them off?
It"s really not okay to do this all afternoon and into the night perhaps your neighbours would like to enjoy their garden too.

A trampoline and a couple of barking dogs would be great too

11Hawkins · 12/06/2022 10:51

I agree with your neighbours. 1030 is pretty late.

Nobody wants to listen to your music.

How are your neighbours supposed to enjoy THEIR garden.

Unbelievably selfish and inconsiderate.

Nein9 · 12/06/2022 10:52

This is why I'm glad we don't have neighbours, I'd despair if I saw all of that going up in a nearby garden. You sound very unaware and inconsiderate OP, of course no one minds a small get together every now and then. The whole sound system debacle sounds awful, it's arsey and annoying during the day, so much worse when lots of people will be trying to sleep. I'm assuming it wasn't soothing classical music you were blaring for everyone to "enjoy"?
I hope this is a reverse.

FlosCampi · 12/06/2022 10:52

This must be a wind-up, there's an undertone of sneering about the quirky bar decor, and being " heartbroken". No-one really writes in this wide-eyed gushing way except in parody.

JuneJubilee · 12/06/2022 10:53

@FunLovinGal

installing that kind of get up in a residential garden is fucking anti social. No one else wants their days/nights ruined listening to you lot get drunk & shout over the music. Not do they want to listen to your choice of music.

hoping you are on a wind up & there aren't neighbours out there having to put up with your behaviour.

This isn't "occasional parties" it is inconsiderate and really annoying. Surely you gave some thought to the fact you aren't living in the middle of nowhere when you planned this? It sounds like your "sound system" is way too loud for a suburban garden and that your drunken noise was far louder than you think.

TBH, I have no problems with occasional parties in the neighbourhood. It is part of living in this kind of housing.

FunLovinGal · 12/06/2022 10:53

@Lazypuppy thanks - yes I also thought that’s an acceptable time on a Saturday. If she had been a bit nicer about it I would have happily turned the music down. But she was literally screaming!

DP thinks we should go and apologise to try and smooth things over but just feel so awkward about going round there…

it’s not like she never does anything wrong - the amount of times her bad parking has made problems for us, but I’ve never had a go at her about it.

so, it had been loud enough that you had to shout over it.

Sorry, but you sound entitled and inconsiderate. Nobody else cares what it cost or that you want to try it out. The fact you fail to see that says it all.

Glad you're not my neighbour.
