To want to enjoy my garden!

DP and I have spent a large amount of money and effort building a tikki bar, built in BBQ and hot tub in our garden (it’s a proper one - not inflatable).

As the weather was so nice yesterday and DP’s kids were at their mums we decided to have a garden party/BBQ and invited a few of our friends round early evening.

It was so great to try out the new BBQ, hot tub, and the bar is fab - really fun and quirky decor, inspired by our holidays. Made everyone cocktails!

Only thing is, we’ve put in a new sound system, so wanted to test it. But before you criticise me, it’s not like we expect to be able to play loud music all of the time - only thinking in the afternoons and perhaps a couple of hours on Friday or Saturday nights when kids aren’t staying with us.

Anyway, at 10.30 (so not exactly middle of the night!) our neighbour came and screamed at us over the fence to turn off the music and to stop talking. We weren’t even playing it that loud at that point as had turned it down - so we could all hear each other talk over it without shouting.

She said if we don’t shut up she will call the police! FFS! We’ve only just put it in so of course we wanted to enjoy it.

I’m so angry! We’ve spent thousands and fully intend to enjoy our new outdoor space. We would not play music to the early hours but it really wasn’t that late.

AIBU to just keep using it and make sure music is off before 11? The thought of not being able to enjoy our lovely garden is heartbreaking!

And have 3 windchimes

And an outdoor cinema screen.

blebbleb · 12/06/2022 10:57

My neighbours do this once every few months with really loud music. It's annoying as we can't leave the windows open in the summer when my son goes to bed but we ignore it as it's not very often. If it was more frequent I'd be pretty fed up.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 12/06/2022 10:57

Who puts a sound system in the garden 😳

backinthebox · 12/06/2022 10:57

There seem to be a remarkable number of posts on MN these days, especially in AIBU, that seem specifically designed to get posters frothing. I’d say this was one of those sort of posts.

How close is the bar and hot tub to your neighbours house?

It’s at the back of the garden (which is quite long) - it’s not right under their window or anything. You can’t hear the hot tub from the house

This is so unconvincing it makes my eyes bleed.

Againstmachine · 12/06/2022 10:57

8 people will get progressively louder especially over the hot tub noise and the sound system and drink. And they talk louder so the music gets turned up.

Yep you are selfish and the neighbour has a right to peace.

What sort of idiot puts a hot tub in with price of power at moment anyhow, but I'm not a fan of hot tubs I don't get it at all.

lickenchugget · 12/06/2022 10:58

You sound horrendous

poppetandmog · 12/06/2022 10:58

You installed a sound system in your garden? You sound like nightmare neighbours tbh. I don't know anyone who would think this is acceptable.

TheVolturi · 12/06/2022 10:59

Ahhhh a garden bar. If you live in the Hollywood Hills that's fab. On a new build estate in Chiswick, not so much.

PermanentlyTired03 · 12/06/2022 10:59

Unless you have such a big garden that your neighbours can't hear your music, just don't have it on at all. However much your sound system cost you, playing music outside is just annoying. If other people don't like your taste in music then you've totally ruined their day in the garden.

OldManRivers · 12/06/2022 11:00

All of it is fine except you installed a SOUND SYSTEM into a suburban garden?! I honestly can't get over that. Yes, take a speaker out and play some music if you are having an occasional party, but to install a sound system is absolutely bonkers!

Momicrone · 12/06/2022 11:00

But you can hear the sound system from the house, are your neighbours allowed to enjoy their gardens?

FrownedUpon · 12/06/2022 11:00

Oh God, I dread having a neighbour like you. Who puts a sound system in their garden? So selfish.

AhNowTed · 12/06/2022 11:00

Jesus Christ, poor neighbours listening to your crap all afternoon AND Friday and Saturday nights.

NO decent neighbour puts a fucking SOUND SYSTEM in the garden.

What about THEIR enjoyment of THEIR garden.

Fucking unbelievable.

Northernsoullover · 12/06/2022 11:00

I'm thinking this is lifted from a news story I saw yesterday. About a man who installed all this shit in his garden and upset his neighbours.

AssignedBlobbyAtBirth · 12/06/2022 11:01

If this is real I am eternally grateful that you are not my neighbours

Squiff70 · 12/06/2022 11:02

10.30pm really IS that late, especially when some of your neighbours may have small children.

Yes, you should be able to enjoy your garden but not at the expense of other people's right to relative peace and quiet.

Keep the music down day and night, and DEFINITELY turn it down more when young children are going to bed around 7.30pm.

You sound like a nightmare neighbour tbh, not just because of the noise but your attitude.

lemonyfox · 12/06/2022 11:02

Does your next door neighbours have kids? Because if my toddler was in bed and next door we're still playing music (on a fucking surround sound for Christ sake) I'd be kicking off too. If not, I'd still be pissed off. When you're in a hot tub and talking over the bubbles you don't realise how loud you are. You sound like an inconsiderate selfish neighbour.

MissMaple82 · 12/06/2022 11:03

Clearly it was loud or else it wouldn't have impacted them, and 10.30 being late is subjective! I'd be pissed off if you were my neighbours playing music at that time every weekend.

Bonjovispjs · 12/06/2022 11:04

IF this is real, which I very much doubt, then you are the neighbour from hell that we all dread!

KyaClark · 12/06/2022 11:04

Reverse.

cdba88 · 12/06/2022 11:04

Gotta be a reverse

supertedlasso · 12/06/2022 11:05

Someone I work with had a similar garden and then complained that their neighbours, who never used their garden, started doing their garden up only once she'd sold the hot tub with its sound system and then the house. I bet they were over the moon.

I'm thinking this is lifted from a news story I saw yesterday. About a man who installed all this shit in his garden and upset his neighbours.

Not unless the man was my DP! I would have been happy with a portable speaker but he has always dreamed of a proper music set up. Just because the sound is good quality though doesn’t mean we would play it really loud!
