Who do you think qualifies as 'half decent'?
None of the current Cabinet, IMO.

Not Sunak

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-61754394
Rishi Sunak has been accused of failing to act soon enough to save £11bn of taxpayers' money that has been used to pay interest on government debt.

Bollindger · 10/06/2022 08:32

But the fuel price rises are because of Putin and the war. This will change and go down again.
Higher wages = high production cost= price rises.
This is not just a UK problem is it? So Boris isn't the reason food costs more in Spain...

It is a UK problem because so much of our fuel prices are tax. Every time the price goes up, so does the tax take. The government is currently collecting an extra £4 million a day from fuel tax. They could cut that and not miss the revenue. They could also do what Malta’s done and set a national price for petrol - it’s €1.34 a litre there and that’s what every filling station has to charge.

DuncinToffee · 10/06/2022 08:39

Yes other countries have problems too, just not as bad as the UK.

Notonthestairs · 10/06/2022 08:42

Presumably high fuel prices means increased costs for hauliers who pass on costs to suppliers who pass on the costs to customers.

I don't believe that the Government are completely powerless to cap costs.

11 billion pounds! Why on earth didn't Sunak insure against the debt?

Bollindger · 10/06/2022 08:47

So the money promised up to £1200 in some cases isn't a repayment from higher tax? Because I thought that was what it was classed as.

It is but the Treasury is running a huge tax excess over the amount it budgeted. And every time fuel goes up it gets more. 46% of the cost of petrol is tax. So, now it costs £100 to fill a tank, the government gets £46. And that’s the thing that’s hurting people the most right now. The government’s fiddling while Rome burns.

Bollindger · 10/06/2022 08:03

I think it is funny how people won't listen to the lessons of history.
During bad time people vote Tory as they don't trust Labour.
When things start to improve Labour offer massive Tax cuts and Benefit rises and get in, but right now with prices rising the Torys are the ones offering money.
So just what will Labour offer to get elected?
They should be riding high with so many problems to be solved, instead the are AWOL.

People are listening to the lessons of history. It's the government who have their heads in the sand.
As a result, people still don't trust Labour, but they trust the conservatives less.
Politics in this country has been driven down to the point where it seems it can go no lower, and then something else comes along.
Starmer is working on regaining trust whilst Johnson in flushing it down the toilet.

L1ttledrummergirl · 10/06/2022 09:14

In February the government(Liz Truss) said they would "absolutely" support Britons who went to Ukraine to support Ukranians in their fight for freedom.
Britons listen and in June they are given the death sentence by Russia.
Great work British government, if those men don't come home then it's on you.
Good leadership my arse.

Peregrina · 10/06/2022 09:32

Exactly my thoughts about the two Britons, L1ttledrummergirl.
Now Truss is protesting whining about it, having conveniently forgotten what she said earlier.

L1ttledrummergirl · 10/06/2022 09:42

I do have to correct myself though as the two men involved had been in the Ukrainian military prior to Russias invasion. They should be protected under the Geneva convention, so a slightly different situation but the government is still responsible for ensuring that they are treated in accordance with the Geneva convention.
They are still accountable but in a slightly different way.

Although if anyone who signed up after Truss comments is treated the same way the point still stands.

DuncinToffee · 10/06/2022 09:45

Truss' comments were irresponsible but this is on Putin.

Peregrina · 10/06/2022 10:02

Truss' comments were irresponsible but this is on Putin.

Yes, but competent Foreign Secretaries would know when to keep their mouths shut or choose their words carefully. No one could say they didn't know what Putin was like.

See also Boris Johnson as Foreign Sec and Iran.

WaitroseWoman · 10/06/2022 11:19

When I saw the news about the death sentences handed down to the British fighters, I immediately thought of Truss's earlier comments. I also thought about the hugely damaging, foolish and factually incorrect comments Boris Johnson made about Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

I am not disagreeing with you, just clumsily saying that Putin is responsible for the treatment and trial of these 3 men.

Most people would think that losing £11 billion through sheer incompetence would be an automatic resigning matter for any Chancellor. Obviously Sunak doesn't, because he has the example of Johnson for whom nothing is a resigning matter. Just another example of the horrendous damage Johnson has caused to the constitution and the country.

WaitroseWoman · 11/06/2022 00:01

Tomorrow's front pages: New plot to oust Boris Johnson and even Prince Charles has described sending asylum seekers to Rwanda as 'appalling'.

Good for Charles. I don't think Johnson is in favour with the Royals.
I don't think he should be expecting a knighthood any time soon.

Absolutely.

It also means that he cannot sack or ask anyone to resign - and they know it. Which is likely to just lead to more mistakes because they'll care less about needing to get it right.

I see no evidence that this government has cared at any point about getting things right. So I fail to see how they can care less about it.
