Starting a new thread as last one wasn't accepting new posts.. Years ago I was a young dancer and background singer .. Very shy starting out on the job I loved (age 16 ) Jim Davison was on the Sunderland Empire about 2002 ish.. He was awful.. Moody! Shouty! Miserable, Rude.😭 I danced and sang in a lot of shows afterwards, and the much bigger stars were absolutely lovely.. But he is the one I remember most.. Awful man!.. I have worked with the Nolan Sisters and they all were so lovely.. I really understand how Linda (she was so kind and lovely to me, as were all of the sisters) did not like Jim Davison when she was in Big Brother (that was not the man he acted like on that show) Out of all the 50+ lovely celebrities I worked with over 15 years(some quite famous stars) , this is the one I remember most as the most horrible one.

Richard madden was in my village during lockdown with lily James and Dominic Cooper. He's a asshole they were nice

mycatisannoying · 12/06/2022 01:34

I know it's not quite the same, but my 15 year old daughter saw Harry Styles in concert tonight and was absolutely struck by how well he came across. She's a fairly anxious person and hard work in general but described it as some kind of spiritual awakening!
If anyone has any experiences pertaining to him, she'd love to hear them!

whynotwhatknot · 11/06/2022 22:32

tell us more abo9ut richard madden

everyone loves him i dont see it myself

He has a problem with women. I don't mean he assaults them but he's unkind to women and bullies them. But if there's a male member of staff around he's sweetness and light. Strange man. Unpleasant.

XelaM · 12/06/2022 04:26

Omg Richard Madden is soooo hot in Medici. I have such a weakness for him. I haven't read the full thread, but is he a "bad celeb" then? 😱

It can't be much fun for the other three celebs playing when you get somebody behaving like that, as the whole show is designed around a mixture of camaraderie and friendly rivalry among the four people. It doesn't really work when you get one person unwilling to take part.

As an aside, I like it when they have somebody who storms it each day and then starts allowing the others to choose a prize instead, to avoid scooping the lot; but I do wonder if said people sometimes wish they could change history: when they chose their favourite of a lacklustre selection on an earlier day but then there's something they'd really love that comes up on a later day's table, when they've already established the clear understanding for what they're going to do!

I wonder whether people's agents advise them that if they're winning every day on House of Games they need to back off at least one day and let someone else in, because it never gives off great vibes if someone is nakedly ambitious. There was a comedian who did win every day and it became almost boring because no-one else had a chance. I noticed that when she came back on the winners' competition she seemed to be less try-hard, and suspected she'd had a bit of backlash from her previous appearances.

I went out with my best friend's older brother in the mid 70s when l was in my teens. Started seeing him when l was 15, he was 27

this happened alot back in the 90s and early 00s in Ireland where I grew up and the legal age is 17. But when people say this on mn we get crucified.

I grew up in a small village in Ireland in the 70s/80s and I did see it happen to a school friend. It absolutely wasn't common or acceptable, however Ireland in those days was still a priest-riddled judgemental place with conversely a very lax attitude to grown men taking advantage of (much) younger girls.

We all saw it happen, we all knew it was wrong, but there was no safeguarding the way there is now. Indeed the line was, that she was a "slut" who led him on. Awful. Ireland was a horrible place back then.

Oh and the reason why our teachers didn't pass any remarks on this man in his late 20s collecting his 14yo "girlfriend" at the school gates was I suspect, because at least two of our male teachers wrre in relationships with female students of the same age. (Found that out after I'd left school).

We also had a teacher in his 50s/60s who many years later it emerged had been abusing young male students including some in my class. We never suspected anything because homosexuality was not decriminalised until '93 and we were so innocent I think most of us didn't even know what the word meant.

Sorry that's a very heavy topic for such a brilliant thread!

My only celeb encounter was Tommy Tiernan (comedian and Gerry in Derry Girls). Sound, friendly and kind in a difficult situation.

LaMarschallin · 12/06/2022 09:08

I disagree. I think often there's people who don't have a great deal of general knowledge and it's not "naked ambition" for the one who does to give the answer.
I don't like it when someone's almost bullied when they're doing well and the others (often encouraged by Richard O) gang up on them.
I know it's only fun etc but one comedian recently seemed genuinely upset by it.

(I'm a big fan of HoG and Pointless and, yes! I expect I'm over-invested Smile)

LaMarschallin · 12/06/2022 09:10

@ninnynonny , that made me laugh. The fragrant Mary shooing them away with a tea towel !! 🤣
I love Jeffrey Archer. I've just read his prison diaries, I love all his books. I've never met him ; after your description, I don't think I want to. I shall live in ignorant bliss, and worship from afar.

We used had a holiday flat on The Esplanade at Scarborough, Jimmy Savile had one further down the road. Jim used to stand talking to the man who painted pictures of the view from The Esplanade.

Heard Jim telling artist, he had kept in touch with Jeffrey Archer after his prison sentence but most of Jeffrey's friends had abandoned him, they were quite happy to drink his champagne and eat his shepherds pie but at the first sight of trouble they were off.

No, giving the answer isn't a problem, nor is getting to the buzzer quickly. But it's the ones who are hunched over the buzzer like coiled springs and way ahead every single game who don't come over well - and it makes for a bit of a dull programme if no-one else stands a chance. Hence the fact that I suspect a lot of them work out for themselves or are told that it would be a good idea to sit back for at least one game.

Maybe another over-invested type here ...

LaMarschallin · 12/06/2022 09:58

AmaryIlis

I do know what you mean and if I were on it (hang on - my delusions of grandeur are kicking in again <wobbles head>), I'd really want to win but would hope I'd have the sense to try to appear laid back and self-deprecating.
But if it was a physical contest, everyone would obviously be trying to win or they'd look a bit odd; eg strolling down to the finish line instead of running or, on CGBBBO, using a packet sponge mix instead of producing the best cake they can. It's a shame that people who are bright have to pretend it's not something they're proud of, I suppose.
(Spot the geek who was rubbish at sports at school and was bullied for doing well in exams Sad
I do make a nice cake though...Smile)

LaMarschallin · 12/06/2022 10:02

and it makes for a bit of a dull programme if no-one else stands a chance.

Should have said: that is a good point. I guess they hope the other guests' personalities will add to the entertainment, or, perhaps, they should try to get a better mix of guests.

I'm definitely winning the "Over Invested" trophy now Grin

I missed Patsy Kensit on HoG, but I did see Linda Robson who was quite unbelievably thick.

Bob Mortimer came and looked around the aquatic centre I worked in. He was alone and misplaced his car keys. I found them and approached him to return them. He wasn’t rude but wasn’t friendly either. I remember thinking he wasn’t smiley like his TV persona.

Joanna Lumley was an absolutely delightful. So friendly and down to earth.
One year she sang happy birthday to me as she visited our primary school on my 11th birthday. She was a regular visitor to our village because her mum lived there.

My username is from Bob Mortimer's book. In the book he discusses his shyness and how it has impacted his life. I think that's what you may have been seeing there. Someone else mentioned how surprised they were about his shyness when meeting him in the flesh.

I'm gutted about Craig Charles. I got into Red Dwarf when I was about 7, so am a huge fan. I assumed he was similar to Dave Lister, but obviously not! I know he had a troubled past with drugs (doesn't excuse his behaviour towards women) but thought he may be ok now as he has got older. Im surprised he has kept his career if he has been like that. I know him and Chris Barrie didn't always get on and assumed it was Chris being the arrogant one, but obviously not! I hope Robert Llewlyn is a decent chap in real life. He seems it, but who knows. I have heard good things about DJJ despite the sctrictly drama.

@ChrisReasBathEggs Fuck me, you've just reminded me that I met Robert Llewelyn when I was at some psychology lectures in the 90's.
Very good speaker and cheerfully dealt with hoards of students mobbing him.

ChrisReasBathEggs · 12/06/2022 11:17

Glad to hear that. He does seem very down to earth on TV.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/06/2022 11:34

I get the point about people who are possible 'over-competitive; on ROHoG; but more often than not, they have a comedian on (usually in seat 4), and I would assume it goes with the territory to be intelligent, sharp and quick-witted (excepting certain 'comedians' about whom and whose yachts and bath robes we've already spoken). They're probably also used to getting in there quickly in preparation for hecklers - on ROHoG, they're one of only four people; but if they're doing a gig, it's potentially the one of them 'against' thousands of people if they don't get them on side and claim the upper hand early on.

That said, I think it's something in general that, when it comes to sport and physical prowess, we actively urge people to be the very best they can be to 'conquer' all of the opposition and come out proudly on top; whereas with academic and/or mental contests, we almost see it as bad form and 'really not the done thing' to want to - and try to - win. As somebody with a reasonable amount of mental acuity, but who wouldn't win an egg and spoon race against a group of 4yos, it does seem rather unfair and frustrating.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/06/2022 11:35

'Possibly', that should have said.

whynotwhatknot · 12/06/2022 23:13

thanks @MurderAtTheBeautyPageant sounds like a pig and another poster agrees

AmaryIlis · 13/06/2022 01:26

I think it's perfectly permissible for people, including celebrities, to be competitive on things like Mastermind, Pointless etc. It just doesn't work with ROHoG partly because they're competing against the same people all week, but also because it's not really a serious games show/quiz and it comes over as a bit sad to be desperate to win a relatively easy contest based on intentionally silly things like Answer Smash and trying to guess a film title written in emojis.

LaMarschallin · 13/06/2022 08:03

AmaryIlis

It just doesn't work with ROHoG partly because they're competing against the same people all week

Lots of competitions are like that: SCD for example. People don't stop trying on that because they've come top of the leader board two weeks running and the others should have a go at winning.
And people cry on SCD when someone leaves, so they've obviously grown really close to each other. Ahem.

but also because it's not really a serious games show/quiz and it comes over as a bit sad to be desperate to win a relatively easy contest based on intentionally silly things like Answer Smash and trying to guess a film title written in emojis.

Well, what makes me feel sad is the people who are able to answer almost no questions in a "relatively easy contest".
As for Answer Smash and the emoji film title one and others, part of being bright is the ability to think laterally and make unusual connections. It's not just being able to answer a stream of questions as in, say, Mastermind.
As WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll said, that maybe part of why comedians become comedians: they're quick and sharp. Intelligence isn't just being able to answer a stream of general knowledge questions.

I don't think that the majority of people who do well on HoG are "sad" or "desperate"; I think they just know the answer. It would make a very dull programme if everybody sat there looking encouragingly at someone who patently hasn't a clue.
Imo, it's usually the clueless ones who get cross and desperate - and sometimes a bit irritable - because they realise that they're coming across as not very clever.
The saddest ones, also imo, are the ones that don't even know how dim they're sounding and fill in the time by laughing hysterically or making a hell of a noise to get the attention they're not getting by doing well.

But, as I said before, our reactions are mostly all based on our own life experiences so others will think differently.

(Surely I now get the Over Invested trophy plus the wheely luggage to take it everywhere in? Ooh! And the fondue set because Ive just been catching up on the cheese thread and I'm peckish now)

Helena Bonham Carter gave me a lovely smile when I was in a very stressful situation so always liked her.

Tom Hiddleston was polite and helpful when Dh and I were lost (we were wearing just swimming costumes so was slightly cringe scenario ).

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris martins kids ate crisps and fruit shoots regularly when toddlers as my friend and I witnessed this at soft play. Her frequent pontificating about healthy eating made us snigger!

GP is also a heavy smoker. When asked she says she only has one cigarette a week. 🤥

butterflyball91 · 13/06/2022 08:55

@NigelWithTheBrie79 Thats quite clever or her to say as opposed to saying she doesn't smoke as if she is ever photographed smoking she can just say thats her one fag per week! I always think Paltrow has pretty bad skin for someone so healthy and virtuous but considering she smokes a lot and is a sun worshiper her skin is actually not too bad!
