Starting a new thread as last one wasn't accepting new posts.. Years ago I was a young dancer and background singer .. Very shy starting out on the job I loved (age 16 ) Jim Davison was on the Sunderland Empire about 2002 ish.. He was awful.. Moody! Shouty! Miserable, Rude.😭 I danced and sang in a lot of shows afterwards, and the much bigger stars were absolutely lovely.. But he is the one I remember most.. Awful man!.. I have worked with the Nolan Sisters and they all were so lovely.. I really understand how Linda (she was so kind and lovely to me, as were all of the sisters) did not like Jim Davison when she was in Big Brother (that was not the man he acted like on that show) Out of all the 50+ lovely celebrities I worked with over 15 years(some quite famous stars) , this is the one I remember most as the most horrible one.

OP posts:

*Jamie Oliver - met him through work. Arrogant plonker. Taller than he looks on the telly though. Hit his head on a door frame on his way out and I must admit we all sniggered, as he'd been such a twat during his visit.

Didn't he once burn his willy whilst barbecuing in the nip? He sounds quite accident-prone!*

It can't have been burnt that badly, considering how many children he's produced....

I didn't like Gordon Ramsey until I saw him on a kids' cookery competition.

He was wonderful with the entrants - really kind, not at all patronising and very encouraging. I changed my opinion of him in a heartbeat.

Some people are not particularly nice but they are kind. Some people are nice but not particularly kind. A lot of people seem to struggle to see the difference between these two groups, and are surprised when someone turns out to be an arsehole.

I'm always suspicious of 'nice' people, personally. Being nice is very superficial and easily faked. Genuine kindness is much harder to act.

I do feel sorry for the celebrities who are accosted for photos by strangers then branded unkind, rude, arrogant. They owe the public nothing.

Actually they owe the public EVERYTHING

It depends where they are. Actors at a stage door, it's their job to be nice and talk to fans. In a supermarket on Sunday morning (actors don't do Sunday mornings), no. Best to leave them alone, it's not their job to sign autographs or chat then. Outside of working situations, peopel really ought to leave actors alone- a polite smile will be enough if you want to express your liking, and if they then choose to engage, great. But they need time off just like the rest of us. However, if they behave badly and rudely, in ways that would be bad or rude if you or I did it, like being rude to serving staff in a restaurant or on a plane or the like, or being generally anti-social, then of course it's fair game to say so.

OP it’s funny you should mention Paul Daniels. I had the misfortune to speak to him as part of my job , back in the 90’s, and he was the most odious man I’ve ever spoken to . He was all “ Don’t you know who I am?”, and reduced me almost to tears for something I had absolutely no control over - nor anyone in charge. I will never forget the way he spoke to me. Horrible.

ninnynonny · 09/06/2022 16:44

We live locally to Jeffrey Archer and he is a total horror. He got very very drunk in his local years ago and DH and friend had to help him home. He drunkenly ivited them in but the fragrant Mary was so horrified with these two lads 'manhandling' her husband she actually shooed them out with a tea towel. The next he saw them he had a go at them for getting him into trouble.
On another occasion I was running in a charity race as part of a team. Dear jeffrey decided to sit in a chair which we had for one of our team mates elderly mothers so I asked him to get off it. He looked outraged and said 'My WIFE is in this race!' I said 'Lots of people are, now can I have this chair back please?' He wasnt impressed

CaveMum · 09/06/2022 16:50

Frankie Dettori is highly unpleasant. He’s trotted out (pardon the pun) as the face of racing, but very few people in racing (by which I mean general stable staff and workers, not trainers and folk in authority who he has to suck up to) have a nice thing to say about him.

TarpaulinEyes · 09/06/2022 12:35

He's been mentioned a lot but has anyone met Boris Johnson? Nearest I've got was being a volunteer during the 2012 Olympics. Got to stand in the Mall and watch the parade afterwards. One of the group I 'worked' with saw Boris processing down the Mall and called out hello to him. Boris looked appalled and speeded up hastily.

Agree with PP upthread. I thought Miriam Margoles didn't go for the men so can only assume the stories she tells are pure shock value.

I know two people who have. Neither like him. Both know him professionally.

blue421 · 09/06/2022 17:26

I have a friend who is very no nonsense. She said Boris was utterly charming, made her feel like she was the only person in the room. Ahem.

butterflyball91 · 09/06/2022 17:36

@blue421 I imagine if he fancies you (and doesn't he fancy every thing that moves) he can be quite charming.

Icouldbehappy · 09/06/2022 17:46

I adore Robert Carlyle. Saw him years ago in the supermarket and he was so nice to the two workers who came out of the warehouse/back bit of the shop to ask for his autograph.
I didn’t want to bother him while he was shopping but I was ecstatic when he gave me a lovely wee smile as he went past me.

I’ve met loads of famous people and fortunately, they were all really positive encounters.

Martin Fry of ABC is charm personified and very gracious and generous. Spent ages signing for everyone.
Bryan Ferry was lovely too, though his driver drove off when someone got their phone out to take pics. Everyone had been warned.
Robert Englund (Freddie) was also incredibly charming and chatty.
Dave Prowse was extremely quiet but it was the end of what I’m sure was a very long day at a comic con. Still a very nice guy.
I have loads more 😂

I might have missed one but anyone met Louis Theroux? Want him to be one of the nice guys

I did, he was at a book signing in 2006 in Dublin. I walked past and said ''hi Louis'' and he said ''hello how are you?''

It was quite empty in that there was no interest in him but in fairness this was before he became very famous through his journalism and documentaries so he didn't have the same exposure or fanbase back then.

Ooh you lucky gal

Chocaholic9 · 09/06/2022 17:48

Has anyone met Nigella?

Ablemable88 · 09/06/2022 17:52

Lewis Hamilton is a bully and so are the rest of his siblings. At his secondary school he beat up and broke some poor kids nose.

Chocaholic9 · 09/06/2022 17:52

Although I have to say I do feel a bit sorry for some of these celebs.

I'm not a celebrity but I have a website that is well known in a particular niche. I had low blood sugar and desperate for lunch and someone recognised me from my website; afterwards I realised I might have seemed a bit rude because the restaurant we were both at had stopped serving lunch and I was starving and trying to get out of there to find somewhere else to eat, and didn't know what to say to this person who had recognised me. My brain wasn't working! It was an odd experience and I bet she was disappointed. I imagine some of these celeb encounters that didn't go well were not because of someone being a horrible person, but because someone had been caught at a bad moment.

Has anybody every met Shaun Williamson off-set? He comes across as such a remarkably intelligent yet humble, kindly, unassuming man - who never gets angry at people calling him Barry! I'd be so disappointed to hear that he wasn't genuinely like that irl.

But for the fact that it could get confusing having two of them called 'Shaun W', if they ever look for another Chaser, I think he would be perfect.

The other one I'm a bit fascinated to know about is Dale Winton. I've read reports of people saying what a beautifully kind, gentle soul he was when they bumped into him; but I just can't square that with the fact he was such close friends with Cilla and P O'G - both of whom are universally reported as being.... not quite so nice....

I met Shaun Williamson when he was appearing in Guys and Dolls. We were waiting to see Darius at the stage door and Shaun stopped for a chat and was happy to have photos taken even though he was in a rush to get ready for the matinee. He came across as being a really friendly bloke.

Completely! She's the last person to fall for a sleazy chat up line but apparently he was captivating.

On the topic of politicians, we met George Osborne ice skating at Somerset House. He went up in my estimation as (a) he was absolutely dreadful at skating but had gone to keep his daughter company and (b) he was extremely charming when my kids asked for a photo.

Ron Weasley slammed the door on DD’s pram in the Pizza Express in Convent Garden.

top three most bizarre moments of my life.

My first thought was "Why does the pram have a door?" 🤔

Then I realised.

Amdone123 · 09/06/2022 18:21

@ninnynonny , that made me laugh. The fragrant Mary shooing them away with a tea towel !! 🤣
I love Jeffrey Archer. I've just read his prison diaries, I love all his books. I've never met him ; after your description, I don't think I want to. I shall live in ignorant bliss, and worship from afar.

whatagrayday · 09/06/2022 18:27

Sorry! I do have to admit to enjoying his books though

Macwomble · 09/06/2022 18:38

Has anyone mentioned Fish from Marillion yet? He was a delight and even carried my mum's shopping home for her.

*Also, Richard E Grant who asked me if I minded not talking as he had been narrating an audio book all day and had enough of talking, also understandable.
*
What a luvvie! Couldn't he have managed a couple
of words Hmm

It is very heavy on the vocal apparatus. Much more so than chatting all day. It's the vocal equivalent of climbing a mountain as opposed to ambling around the countryside.

An actor's voice is his/her instrument and they can't afford to abuse it.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 09/06/2022 18:47

Robert Englund (Freddie) was also incredibly charming and chatty.

This made my day. I was always a Freddie fan, but Englund does seem to be a lovely guy. Apparently he will always make time for people and there's video footage of him doing Freddie's 'welcome to primetime' quote when asked to! Ahhhh.

I'm also glad to read the positive comments about Rik Mayall. I had SUCH a crush on him back in the day and he was a real comic genius: I'd have been so disappointed if he'd turned out to be an arse.

Lincslady53 · 09/06/2022 19:00

A long time ago, around 1976, I worked in a supermarket in Golders Green. In those days, the shop closed at 4.00pm and we then cleared cabinets, cleaned shelves, before restocking on the Monday to open on Tuesday. Virtually every Saturday afternoon, Tony Booth, actor in Till Death us do Part and father of the future Cherie Blair, would start banging on the doors, demanding that we open to sell him some fags. Our checkout manager was a fiery Irish lady, who had a stand up slanging match with him every time. He was a drunken arse . Same shop, Diana Coupland used to come in regularly, and got very aggressive late on a Saturday as we had sold out of legs of lamb. Glad I no longer have to serve the public.

Craig Charles is awful and I can't wait for it to all come out in the wash what he's been up to. I'd advise anyone to steer well clear!

Other than the rape allegations?!

Fireblanket · 09/06/2022 19:12

I met Jay Blades last year as part of a work project. He was very busy and so didn't have time to chat, but came across as very down to earth and approachable.
