To ask how you wash your knickers?

Not the poo troll 😄💩

I have always washed mine on 40 with a general load (trousers, t-shirts etc).

I want to start washing my clothes at 30 to see if it keeps them looking newer for longer, but I’m not comfortable washing knickers and socks at that temperature.

I’ve had an initial investigate, but the jury seems to be out. Some say 30 is fine, some say 60 and others say you need to add a disinfectant.

I’m now not sure if I should have even been washing them with my other clothes at all!

What to do!?

I wash my lingerie and socks together on a 40 and everything else (unless it's absolutely filthy) gets washed on a quick cycle at 30.

theMedicinalPorpoise · 08/06/2022 09:33

I chuck mine in the dishwasher along with the cats bowls and, if I'm having company, a whole salmon wrapped in foil.

Don't forget the loo brush!

60 or 70. Kills the pathogens.

What pathogens do you imagine live in your underwear? Hilarious

OP - 30 in a general load is fine

CounsellorTroi · 08/06/2022 09:50

My DH does a smalls wash comprising my knickers, his underpants and our socks. He does it on the mixed load setting at 40 degrees.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 08/06/2022 09:54

What in the hell is going on in all your fannies for these separate washes with different powder/temperatures?
It's not a different wash setting you need, it's a Doctor.

Millions of people have to wash their clothes in rivers. Seriously, you’re not going to catch anything nasty, nor smell offensive, by putting underwear in the washing machine at 40, 30, 20 or a cold wash. It certainly doesn’t need disinfectant.

There are lots of things I don't need - I just happen to like a capful of Zoflora in some of my washes. It's quite tame compared to some of the behaviour discussed on MN, let's face it.

  1. They're not a biohazard they're my own pants

In the washing machine with other stuff. My fanny is not so toxic that I need to do them on a separate wash on 90 degrees

Yes same as this

I bung it all together. I only seperate colours and wash mostly of 30 or 40.

I do have a few friends that hand wash their knickers in the bath/sink and hang them up to dry in the bathroom. They would probably be horrified at my blatent mix of pants, socks and tea towels. Sounds grim when you say it but really it all comes out clean.

BobbinHood · 08/06/2022 14:01

30 in with everything else. What am I going to catch from my own pants?

TheKeatingFive · 08/06/2022 14:07

What am I going to catch from my own pants?

Pathogens apparently. I hear they're bad 😳

Same. Apart from my special lacy ones that are washed by hand.

I'm delighted to report that my fanny flora (or indeed any other bodily flora) has suffered no ill effects from Zoflora. I wouldn't be too sure with your surefire if I were you.

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/06/2022 16:03

@WaterBottle123 fungal infections (for example those that cause thrush), parasite eggs (there is another thread on here about somebody who has repeatedly had pinworm Infections), other bacterial and viral infections.

fungal infections (for example those that cause thrush), parasite eggs (there is another thread on here about somebody who has repeatedly had pinworm Infections), other bacterial and viral infections.

Is there any actual evidence that anyone's getting such infections from washed knickers?

WaterBottle123 · 08/06/2022 16:52

@dizzydizzydizzy

They'll all be killed by laundry liquid. You know, like how soap kills COVID.

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/06/2022 16:54

@WaterBottle123 not according to my GP

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/06/2022 17:07

@TheKeatingFive my GP told me that I would n't get thrush so much if I washed my knickers hot and dried them outside in the sunshine. Since I started doing that many years ago, I've probably had it once, rather than 2 or 3 times a year.

StarlightLady · 08/06/2022 17:10

I am going to become a multi-millionaire! Thanks to this post l have discovered a niche market that l did not know existed.

l’m going to launch a washing powder especially for knickers. 😂. Not sure what to call it though. Fanny Bubbles 😀 ?

TheKeatingFive · 08/06/2022 17:11

Well I wash my knickers at 30 and have never had thrush in my life.

Is there actual data on this beyond anecdotes?

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/06/2022 17:24

@TheKeatingFive I'm passing on what I was told by a professional.

I wasn't surprised to hear it though. DM who used to work as a biochemist often used to tell me that different germs are killed by different things...... some killed by heat, some by bleach etc.

BooksAndHooks · 08/06/2022 17:33

most of ours is now washed at 30 and then hung on the line so the sun will kill off anything the wash missed but the detergents are designed to work at lower temperatures now.
