To ask how you wash your knickers?

Not the poo troll 😄💩

I have always washed mine on 40 with a general load (trousers, t-shirts etc).

I want to start washing my clothes at 30 to see if it keeps them looking newer for longer, but I’m not comfortable washing knickers and socks at that temperature.

I’ve had an initial investigate, but the jury seems to be out. Some say 30 is fine, some say 60 and others say you need to add a disinfectant.

I’m now not sure if I should have even been washing them with my other clothes at all!

What to do!?

More MN'ers determined to destroy the planet just to quell their germ hysteria.

nearlyspringyay · 07/06/2022 17:56

Most of my underwear would get wrecked / shrink at 60. It's never occurred to me not just to chuck in the general wash, but then my dog bowls go in the dishwasher so I'm probably not your target market.

As for washing underwear in the shower first / ironing knickers, seriously life is too short.

Zpoa · 07/06/2022 17:57

Boiled in my favourite saucepan on the stove, for at least 12 minutes. Dash of white vinegar.

BashfulClam · 07/06/2022 17:58

I put pants, socks and towels in together then add a capful of zoflora in the drawer. It seems to work.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/06/2022 17:58

30 degrees with everything else. I also use non bio powder, I didn't realise bio was better. Not that I can use it because of my skin!

Turnthatoff · 07/06/2022 17:58

Oh Christ. 30. Or even cold sometimes.

I don’t scrub my shins in the shower either.

madasawethen · 07/06/2022 17:59

30 or 40 with the rest of clothes.
When I used to bleed profusely, I'd spray a little stain pretreatment on them when I sprayed shirt stains.

Does anyone genuinely disinfect their knickers? What do you think you might catch off them 🤔

I do. I chuck a capful of zoflora in every wash. I wash everything at 40° with non-bio powder. Strangely, although bio powders irritate my skin, the added zoflora doesn't. I also use napisan on sheets.

appletrre · 07/06/2022 18:01

What's the name of that powder often recommended for washing effectively with cold water? Is it persil power or something like that?

Knittingnanny2 · 07/06/2022 18:03

@nearlyspringyay me too, well cat bowls. I had no idea it wasn’t approved of until I read a thread on here some years ago!

LakieLady · 07/06/2022 18:04

For those who add vinegar, isn't there a risk that your fanjo might smell like and fish and chip shop? 🤔

Pmsl!

appletrre · 07/06/2022 18:11

Wouldn't zoflora irritate your skin, for the people who use that for their underwear?

I have to use bio, or my laundry starts to smell of BO. Gross, I know!

You do realise that you are flirting with bubonic arse disease? Hmm

cicatrix1 · 07/06/2022 18:17

Ive never had thrush or a uti...(very lucky) 57 year old. pants go in 30 or 40 or what Iam washing at that time.

Florabritannica · 07/06/2022 18:44

I knew a girl at university who never wore a pair of knickers twice. Her mother would send her a parcel of clean pants every week.

Mirrorball2022 · 07/06/2022 18:48

No wonder people get sick they are killing off all good bacteria they come into contact with. Coming into contact with all bacteria good and bad on occasion isn’t the worst thing for our immune systems. We don’t need to bleach, disinfect, boil everything within an inch of its life.

Not sure what some think you are catching from your own knickers, it’s your body parts touching them. Which is generally clean if you wash regularly and also parts are self cleaning too!

Obviously a little more if a nasty contagious illness is running through the house but some of these answers 😆

I've never had a problem. I can't use bio powders because they do cause irritation, but a capful of zoflora doesn't.

HJFTM · 07/06/2022 19:42

Put some laundry disinfectant in with your washes if it makes you feel better 😊 I love the dettol one for scent and fluffiness of clothes but the fabulosa one is alright too

You shouldn't mix different cleaning products.

BeaLola · 07/06/2022 20:24

Mostly 30 wash or 40 sometimes with non bio - I have survived to my 50s like this

TheKeatingFive · 07/06/2022 20:27

Why would you put zoflora in a wash? 😵

honeybushbunch · 07/06/2022 20:31

I do mine in a separate wash at 30 or 40, only because they tend to be white or lighter colours and most of the rest of my clothes are darks, and I find that stops the elastic going quite so grey. I also have skin that reacts to detergent, so I use surcare only for the pants just so I don’t get itchy.

Sorry, no idea why that posted twice! Weird MN glitch…,
