To ask how you wash your knickers?

Not the poo troll 😄💩

I have always washed mine on 40 with a general load (trousers, t-shirts etc).

I want to start washing my clothes at 30 to see if it keeps them looking newer for longer, but I’m not comfortable washing knickers and socks at that temperature.

I’ve had an initial investigate, but the jury seems to be out. Some say 30 is fine, some say 60 and others say you need to add a disinfectant.

I’m now not sure if I should have even been washing them with my other clothes at all!

What to do!?

40 with the rest of the wash. I'm sure someone will tell you you should hand wash underwear but I hung everything in the washer, even dry clean only clothes

Furrbabymama87 · 07/06/2022 16:18

In the washing machine with other stuff. My fanny is not so toxic that I need to do them on a separate wash on 90 degrees

Satsumaonaplate · 07/06/2022 16:20

My husbands socks stink unless I wash at 60C. So I was underwear with towels at 60C

40 degrees normal wash here.

It's DDs white school socks i can never get bloody clean! I'm going to have to start saving them up for a hot white wash with vanish Hmm What do they DO to get the bottoms of their socks that colour?!?!? She swears she isn't running about without her shoes on but .....

<sorry. mutters off>

Have you tried bicarbonate of soda? Make a paste with a bit of water and rub it into the soles of her socks before putting them in the machine. Or put some in a bowl with warm water and soak her socks.

oldtableleg · 07/06/2022 16:24

in with everything else at 30 with bio powder. I do a 60 degree was every now & then to stop the washing machine getting gunked up but I've never felt the need to autoclave my underwear.

I have not! Thanks for the tip 🙂 Will doing that mean i don't need the hot wash?

StarlightLady · 07/06/2022 16:28

Less in the summer because I often don't wear any in the warm weather. 😏I don't do cartwheels though and I don't wear short summer dresses.

ThatsALotOfPassionfruit · 07/06/2022 16:29

I do a separate 60 degree wash for underwear.

Neoandtrinity · 07/06/2022 16:30

Unless you're in the habit of shitting or pissing your pants, 30 or 40 is fine. Especially if you use bio detergent.

Even my 'ladies week pants' as they are called in our house get chucked on with everything else at 30.

JustDanceAddict · 07/06/2022 16:31

30 or 40 - modern washing liquid works at low temps

Fairislefandango · 07/06/2022 16:31

In with everything else at 30° with biological powder. Bio powder kills bacteria - that's the whole point of it. And high temperatures destroy the bacteria-killing enzymes in the powder, so there's no point in washing at high temperatures!

greenacrylicpaint · 07/06/2022 16:31

unless you or a family member has a transmissable disease (like thrush, athletes foot) no need to wash separate or at high temps.

Hopefully!
I chuck bicarb in my white washes and everything stays a good bright white.

prettyteapotsplease · 07/06/2022 16:34

They go in a launder-net bag at 40 with the rest of the washing. At 30 my spinner doesn't seem so efficient (because it's a 'delicate' setting?) and then I have to spin again which is time wasting and uses more energy. I've never had a problem that way.

Excited101 · 07/06/2022 16:34

I’d never wash pants at 30°, I do 40. If I HAD to do 30 I’d chuck laundry cleanser in too.

Well i'm going to try that because it will same me lots on Vanish. Tesco and Sainsbury's own is much cheaper than the branded one, but bi carb would be cheaper. Thanks :)

DolphinaPD · 07/06/2022 16:38

Everything goes in together at 30°.

I'm not dead yet.

You can buy 5kg packets of bicarb online that'll be a lot cheaper per wash than one of the little pots for baking with from the supermarket.
It also works wonders as a cleaning agent with a bit of white vinegar.

Oceanus · 07/06/2022 16:43

I wash most clothes at 30ºC (or even 20ºC but that's because I have quite a few items that are too flimsy) but I always add a desinfectant though ("Sanytol"). When they have blood on them I soak them in water with detergent for a while and then add it to the washer. If they're special knickers I put them in these little net bags which I use for bras and special clothes.

northbacchus · 07/06/2022 16:49

My washing machine has an underwear setting, I've no clue why as everything is washed on a mix wash except towels and bedding.

StarlightLady · 07/06/2022 16:52

@northbacchus - I'm equally puzzled by the "Outdoor" and "Sportswear" settings on mine.

Dalekjastninerels · 07/06/2022 16:54

I wash mine in the washing machine. 😄

StarlightLady · 07/06/2022 16:57

@Dalekjastninerels - You was yours? Is there something wrong with your butler 😂 ?

CraftyGin · 07/06/2022 16:57

Only on Mumsnet...

DoBestIKnow · 07/06/2022 16:57

I iron them - I don't like ironing much but the ironng heat on cotton knickers makes up for a cool wash.
