To ask how you wash your knickers?

Not the poo troll 😄💩

I have always washed mine on 40 with a general load (trousers, t-shirts etc).

I want to start washing my clothes at 30 to see if it keeps them looking newer for longer, but I’m not comfortable washing knickers and socks at that temperature.

I’ve had an initial investigate, but the jury seems to be out. Some say 30 is fine, some say 60 and others say you need to add a disinfectant.

I’m now not sure if I should have even been washing them with my other clothes at all!

What to do!?

Everything goes in together with a colour catcher at 40
I live alone so no point separating it

Winkydink · 08/06/2022 01:07

Wow. In NZ many people wash clothes in cold (not 30, cold) water.

onlythreenow · 08/06/2022 04:41

We sure do @Winkydink - and we seem to manage to have clean clothes (and not be germ ridden) 😁

Vikinga · 08/06/2022 05:04

I wash everything at 30. Always have.

40 degrees normal wash here.

It's DDs white school socks i can never get bloody clean! I'm going to have to start saving them up for a hot white wash with vanish Hmm What do they DO to get the bottoms of their socks that colour?!?!? She swears she isn't running about without her shoes on but .....

<sorry. mutters off>

I'm with you on this. Our youngest sons white socks look awful and to be fair, are a weapon of mass destruction after they have been in his shoes all day.

I scoop vanish into the socks. Does it make a difference, does it hell!!! Angry

Lightning020 · 08/06/2022 05:39

Smalls washed at 30 but with everything else for budget and environmental reasons and 40 is used just for sheets and towels only.

thatweirdhippygirl · 08/06/2022 05:40

I’ve always washed everything in cold. Unless someone has a stomach bug. For ages I had machines that didn’t even have hot water options. Very common here. Haven’t died yet.

Lindisfarne1 · 08/06/2022 05:45

Mine go in normal wash 30 or 40 but I never wash underwear with tea towels or kitchen cloths

StridTheKiller · 08/06/2022 05:47

90° with bleach or caustic soda. I used to store them in an airtight biohazard container then incinerate them after each wear, but the cost of living crisis has put a stop to that.

Lindisfarne1 · 08/06/2022 05:49

And I use bio washing powder straight in the drum, no messy detergent drawer

wandawaves · 08/06/2022 06:43

I wash everything together in cold water, which is normal where I live.

FatOaf · 08/06/2022 07:22

You shouldn't mix different cleaning products.

Nobody is talking about products containing ammonia or chlorine, so there's no reason to avoid mixing them.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/06/2022 07:48

I use a crème brûlée blow torch. A little unorthodox I know, but it seems to do the job.

notacooldad · 08/06/2022 07:52

Black Knicks on a ' dark 40' wash
White and beige knicks on a 'light 40 wash.
Fancy expensive silky knicks on a light 30 wash.

Lalliella · 08/06/2022 08:09

30 with non-bio. Bung them in with all my washing. They’re a bit grey now though!

What's wrong with tea towels in with clothes ? In a normal wash load? I do the whole time, have done for years - not dead yet

Me too 🙄
I’ve managed to reach 68, raise a healthy family and avoid god-knows-what that half of MNetters seem to think will happen if you don’t boil everything ffs!
Bio detergent for everything except baby clothes and a 30° wash, occasionally higher if particularly filthy but that’s very rarely.

Me too! The capsules leave a horrible gungy mess around the rubber door surround in time 🤢

Well, the manufacturers of Zoflora say you shouldn't mix it with any other cleaning products.

I am a total saddo and actually emailed Zoflora directly a while back to ask about adding it to a laundry load in the washing machine. They emailed back and said it was fine to add a capful to the fabric softener bit in the drawer.

I've now gone rogue and put my powder directly in the drum in a small plastic cup, a capful of Zoflora in the washing powder bit in the drawer if I'm washing towels or sheets on a low temp, and fabric softener in its usual place. I know - Zoflora and fabric softener!! 2 cardinal MN sins right there.

We're still alive and haven't grown extra limbs or turned green, thankfully.

SirChenjins · 08/06/2022 08:47

*it was fine to add a capful to the fabric softener bit in the drawer in place of fabric softener

SalomeOtterbourne · 08/06/2022 09:00

Oh gods, is this something else to worry about? I've never given it a moment's thought (but I do add a capfull of disinfectant to every laundry load. )

LadyEloise1 · 08/06/2022 09:12

@SirChenjins
Does the laundry come out smelling gorgeous when you use Zoflora in the fabric conditioner drawer ?

Love love love your user name. It was the best I'd ever seen when I first went on Mumsnet. Still is. Flowers

Ahh - thank you! Smile

Yes, it does come out smelling very nice. I know some posters hate Zoflora and fabric softener with a passion, but perfume me up, I say.

I can't see any explanation there of why you shouldn't mix it with other cleaning products. There is nothing in the product's safety data sheet to say you shouldn't mix it with other cleaning products.

YourWinter · 08/06/2022 09:28

Millions of people have to wash their clothes in rivers. Seriously, you’re not going to catch anything nasty, nor smell offensive, by putting underwear in the washing machine at 40, 30, 20 or a cold wash. It certainly doesn’t need disinfectant.
