That demand destruction basically comes from people not partaking then. Just as most Third World nations are going to enable the West to pay higher prices for food by, well, starving instead.

@MissConductUS Aye, I've heard CA is basically the worst place in the US to drive anything with an ICE. Explains why the well to do in the valleys mass adopted EVs and everyone else moves out of the state or becomes destitute.

They'll have fun trying to power those EVs when the Hoover Dam basically stops generating power in the near future, what with the dearth of water replenishing the lakes like Meade.

Electricity is also wildly expensive in CA because to the green energy requirements and the fact that much of the transmission network is 60-80 years old. That's one reason they have so many wildfires.

CA has had a net outmigration of population for years. Taxes are the highest in the US so businesses leave and take the jobs with them. High-income earners also move to lower tax states, so there's a shortage of doctors. Tech companies are leaving. Lots of places in CA are lovely but the state is badly mismanaged.

It’s weird that there were only blockades and huge protests by hauliers when we had a Labour government, and when fuel prices were much cheaper than now. They seem far more reluctant to take on a Conservative government.

cakeorwine · 08/06/2022 21:31

Increasing fuel prices must be leading to increased VAT revenue to the Government - assuming demand isn't slowing down

montysma1 · 08/06/2022 21:59

£2.10 where I live.

StickyFingeredWeeNed · 08/06/2022 22:06

I paid £1.959 for petrol today. 🤮

I’m with @Morte though - you can keep your crime-riddles cities with 24/7 transport, I’ll plant some tatties and burn shit.

MsOllie · 08/06/2022 23:08

My dad just sent me a text saying he saw it at £2.02 today Shock

BluOcty · 09/06/2022 05:52

It is a shame that public transport outside cities is so bad. Another thing that we should have been investing in.

DontBlameMe79 · 09/06/2022 14:18

To look on the bright side, it’s good for greenhouse gas emissions.

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 09/06/2022 15:43

It's a total joke, where we live there is no public transport, nearest train station is 10 miles away and a bus runs twice a day, 10.30am and 2.30pm five days a week.

Crankley · 09/06/2022 15:56

These prices are shocking. I gave up driving about ten years ago, because I'm physically disabled and wasn't getting any younger. When I got my first car, petrol cost 1 shilling and 6 pence - so 9 pence a gallon 😮

PetraBP · 09/06/2022 18:12

Scary.

During Lockdown 1 it went as low as 97p a litre.

On another thread I said we should price everything in metric AND imperial to keep everyone happy but I take it back…I think I might cry if I saw the fuel price per gallon now!

ifonly4 · 09/06/2022 18:37

We're not going out in car so much now, but had a rare trip out today- saw a garage charging 198.5.

MissConductUS · 09/06/2022 18:40

I saw this article in an American personal finance magazine comparing petrol prices around the world.

Gasoline Prices Around the world

It's all in US dollars and US gallons. If you want the UK equivalent divide the dollars by 1.25 to get pounds and the gallons by 3.78 to get liters.

TurquoiseDress · 09/06/2022 18:50

Here in SE London petrol has hit 1.86!Confused

Our Quashquai now costs over £100 to fill up! I remember a couple summers ago, during first lockdown, a full tank cost around £70

It's bloody insane what's going on, also our gas & electricity has gone up by an insane amount too! Up by over 200% although we were on a fixed rate which then came to an end

TankFlyBoss · 09/06/2022 20:32

When are HMRC going to increase the 45p per mile? Or are we expected to just drive around in our cars at our own expense? It may cover the petrol but it's now not much towards the tyres and wear and tear and if petrol continues to rise in cost then very soon the 45p isn't going to cover even the fuel

supertedious · 09/06/2022 20:36

I live rurally and work in community services. It's now up to £1.90. I'm seriously considering changing jobs as it's no longer cost effective and no pay rise for the past 6 years Sad

QforCucumber · 09/06/2022 20:58

@AnonIsUsuallyAWoman I live in a suburb new build estate - with 0 bus service (except the school one) no train station for 3 miles, DS2 nursery 2 miles in one direction, ds1 school a mile the other way - with no breakfast club provision, and work 5 miles another way. Not using my car, while trying to get everyone to where they need to be before 9am is not a feasible option. I’d bloody love it if it was but our council have a habit of approving new build estates and not thinking about how the people get to anywhere.

invisibilityglasses · 09/06/2022 21:14

I currently drive to work and it takes 18 minutes with no traffic, not including the nursery drop off and collection.

If I was to use public transport to get to work, it would take 47 minutes of walking plus 2 buses.

If I was to walk to work, it would take 3.5 hours.

Cycling isn't an option.

Fuel has to reduce in price or I will need to look for a job closer to home or WFH. It costs £90 to fill my car up and I simply can't afford anymore than this. I can barely afford the £90!

I'd consider downsizing the car. Petrol isn't going to be cheap ever again.

Legoandloldolls · 10/06/2022 08:11

I worked out that its costing me roughly 26p a mile in my 7 year old Zafira. It seems that downsizing the car should be a top priority for me. Unfortunately the secondhand car market to buy one is also very high right now too.

AtomicBlondeRose · 06/06/2022 20:23

What jobs are these where you can “ask for a pay rise”? As far as I know most public sector workers are on a pay scale and don’t just get bumped it for asking! And I’m not sure the average retail worker is going to get a warm reception in the manager’s office when they ask for more money to pay for petrol. I might be wrong but I’ve never known it. There must be such a small sector of jobs where you can ask for a pay rise, surely.

Collective bargaining is the main point a trade union.

Liebig · 10/06/2022 09:17

Yeah, it’s not even like one can get a decent second hand vehicle now with the new car market stumped by supply issues, everyone is getting used cars instead. And many are selling for what they would get brand new.

DdraigGoch · 10/06/2022 10:03

Itsokay2020 · 08/06/2022 19:19

I remember when there were protests when fuel reached £1 a litre, people were outraged and we were stuck in Cornwall and limped home on fumes! Back then our first house cost £78k and I earned not much less than I do today (although I work locally now, rather than the city). It’s not sustainable and I predict a summer of riots, and have done since last Autumn

How will anyone be able to riot? Can't afford to fill up the Molotov cocktails
