Cost me £75 to full up my small car this week, was sure it was about £55 when I bought it four years ago. Light wasn't even on I just wanted a full tank.

I now fill up every Monday when I get my tax credits so I always have petrol. I generally only have to put half a tank on that way so it's less of a hit however that still costs me £35 approx. During lockdown I could fill my tank from empty for £37 ish 😥

Morte · 07/06/2022 08:29

I buy E5 now - it seems to get me about 40-50 miles further for £4 more. I haven’t yet worked out if it’s worth it exactly but I feel like it is.

TarasHarp55 · 07/06/2022 08:34

I don't understand why the government aren't freezing tax on fuel immediately.

Why is everyone shocked? You've all been voting for this for decades. Reap what you sow.
You really think an eco-loon like Carrie Symonds is whispering pro car, low fuel tax policy ideas into Boris' ears?
This move against cars and personal transport started under Blair and Brown, and hasn't stopped since. Don't expect it to stop soon.
This may be the very last few years of the majority being able to afford a car, enjoy it while you can.

This has been a deeply unsuccessful twenty year "move against cars" given the number of vehicles and miles driven per capita have all increased.

Tax treatment of mileage allowance and the public sector mileage payments are certainly things Sunak should be looking at changing.

If people didn't have to drive - even when petrol was lower priced - it would be a significant financial improvement for many families on low to average incomes.

Councils could rapidly expand bus provision if they wanted to (and if central govt provided bus funding at a sensible level)- yes, that won't work for everyone but it would for a large number and if fares are at a sensible level, the saving on not running a second car could be significant.

Safety improvements for cyclists - particularly at junctions - would also help and can often be done rapidly when the will is there. there should be a wider scheme to help with the cost of getting an e-bike and e-cargo bikes. Lots of companies do the cycle to work scheme which means you have no upfront cost but this is not available to everyone and it should be.

We also need to stop the building of new build estates on a-roads with zero public transport, zero safe cycle routes and often no safe pedestrian access either. Integrated public and active transport options should be a requirement for planning.

I wonder how long it will be before the first petrol tanker is hijacked. I wonder how much a full one is worth?

Because it makes them a fortune!

Went away for the weekend. It was 171.9 before, this morning it’s 178.9 for unleaded

I'm always entertained by the multiple posters who assume EVERYONE on MN votes Tory. Hilarious.

If everyone votes Tory it makes me wonder what I'm missing out on as they must be the dog bollocks for everyone to vote for them.

Hopefully the 0.00000001% of non Tory voters represented on MN will overthrow in the next election and we can all live for free with nothing bad happening anywhere in the world that touches our cursed Isle

RaspberryChouxBuns · 07/06/2022 08:50

I spent the last £40 I had in my account on filling my car up and the engine is only half full. Honestly I felt sick.

daffodilandtulip · 07/06/2022 08:51

If the oil companies were struggling and about to go bust, then you could see this. But they are making record profits. So why do we have to keep paying more??? (Same as utilities!)

RaspberryChouxBuns · 07/06/2022 08:53

I'm a life long Labour voter by the way but if there was a proper socialist party I'd vote for them. This Tory shambles (and Brexit, actually) has nothing to do with me voting for it.

I can only wish it was that cheap here 😭

switswoo81 · 07/06/2022 09:00

To be fair and I don't know anything about politics in Britain but I paid 107 euros to fill up my crappy Peugeot in Ireland yesterday so I don't think it's just the Torys.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 07/06/2022 09:03

My parents live opposite a garage and have watched them putting the prices up even though they haven't had a fuel delivery. So they already have the fuel at the price they perviously paid but are happy to put it up even further to match the other garages locally. What a cheek.

Samarie123 · 07/06/2022 09:09

£1.79 in Morrisons this morning. This time last year it was about £1.10. And it's only gonna get worse!

a) I don't vote Tory

b) I don't believe for one second this is anything to do with the environment, the government don't care about the climate crisis they just do the bare minimum to make it look like they are doing something. If they wanted to moved people away from cars for environmental reasons they would invest in public transport. It's about helping their mates make more money.

I'm massively worried about climate change and would love to be able to use public transport but it's non existent where I live, my only other option is to cycle but I live in a very hilly part of Yorkshire. As I mentioned upthread I am looking at buying an e-bike to make the commute bearable but I'm lucky I am in the position to consider that as they are so expensive.

This is the bit I don't understand either. Haven't they said words to the effect that they have more money than they know what to do with?

We're a two car household out of necessity but I'm changing jobs soon and I would love to go down to one car. Poor public transport in my area (small northern city) is a considerable barrier though.

mummyh2016 · 07/06/2022 09:44

At a services on the M5 yesterday (May have been Michaelwood) it was £2 a litre!

PostItNoteScribbles · 07/06/2022 09:49

£1.90 here too (Notts area)

Magicpaintbrush · 07/06/2022 10:09

Where I live the local Texaco is 191.7. Thankfully Asda is 167.7, so I've switched to them.

Because the markets set the price of oil, not the oil companies.

Manekinek0 · 07/06/2022 10:47

I don't know why anyone is surprised. The cost of oil has gone up. There is a bearish outlook on GBP for the foreseeable future due to the cost of living crisis and unresolved Brexit issues. Just look at exchange rates, if GBP slides against USD (petrodollars) then oil becomes far more expensive.

Be expecting £2+ prices by autumn, this will then cause food prices to rise Futher which will be compounded by food shortages due to crop failures (look at the countries who are stopping exports or sounded the alarm over shortages).

Well.. without looking through their accounts (which I assume your parents haven't), it may well be that they will know what they are going to be paying the supplier for their next delivery, and need to raise funds in advance so they can actually pay for it. I.e. the proceeds of selling the last 'batch' of fuel are used to pay for the next one.

PaddleBoardingMomma · 07/06/2022 11:45

If you do a quick Google, many experts and newspapers now saying it's not unlikely that prices for fuel will hit £3 a litre before the end of the year. It's absolutely wild.

Greyskiesaregonnaclearup · 07/06/2022 11:51

The government aren't going to do anything, they were the ones pushing to get people away from working from home and back to offices (to make their mates more money). If I was still working from home I wouldn't have to spend so much on petrol.
