So they want us and need us to go "out" to work but at this rate no-one will be able to afford it

Clever dicks arnt they

100% This.

MsChatterbox · 07/06/2022 05:40

I was saying to my husband the other day how we just seem to be accepting it and they can charge what they want now. It's like covid restrictions have completely diminished any fight in us!

Boredboredboredboredbored · 07/06/2022 05:46

It is becoming untenable now it really is. I have a 90 mile round commute to work and am NHS community staff (Nurse Practitioner preventing hospital admissions), my role was redesigned this year and instead of covering a small area I am now city wide. We have had no mileage increase for years now, it is getting to the point now where I cannot afford to travel to work. The last pay rise pushed me into the next pension bracket and so it made me worse off. I would try and move locally but the same service doesnt exist here and I cannot get the same grade or hours - it is an utter nightmare.

Musingsofthemind · 07/06/2022 05:47

This week I am getting my mileage paid as I am on a different site. Usually I walk to work. The company has recognised that to get people to move sites sometimes the cost of petrol is prohibitive. So a couple of months ago they put the 45p per mile up to 47p per mile. So that's good, but the latest pump prices put us back to where we were and I cannot imagine the company putting the mileage up again.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/06/2022 05:47

Aren't any of you near any supermarkets? I paid either 166.9 or 168.9 for standard unleaded yesterday from Asda, which is obviously a lot more than it used to be, but not as much as some of you are paying.

I use the petrol prices app to check for the best price locally and then fill up when I'm near one of the cheaper ones.

When you can save a good few pounds per tank it's worth going a mile or two out of your way to get to a cheaper place. I always assume those people using service stations or other expensive places are filling up with their employer's money, that's the only time I use them.

Incidentally I'm currently experimenting with whether it is worth paying extra for E5. I fill my car up when the light's been on for a day or two, or sooner if needed and keep an eye on the number of miles per tank.

I always bought E10 when that became the new normal but I've just finished two tanks of E5 where the extra miles were more or less the same percentage wise as the extra cost, so while E5 costs more, it probably costs the same per mile due to better MPG.

189.9 here 😱

Kazziek · 07/06/2022 06:00

My local tesco was 173 on Sunday, and Sainsburys was 171, both up 5p from the previous week.

Those are the supermarket prices in some areas.

Yikes! E-bike anyone?

Aren't you aware that different parts of the country have hugely varying prices or that some peoples drive to a supermarket would negate any savings if they live rurally. I filled up yesterday (Morrisons) and was shocked at £1.70 - feel lucky now reading this thread although I'm sure we'll catch up soon 😟

£1.98 for diesel here. It was £120 to fill up last week, Christ knows what it will be now.

My nearest Asda is 25 miles away, so a 50 mile round trip. My nearest supermarket fuel station is 20 miles away and that's still 179.9.

Funnily enough I went to try one at Halfords at the weekend! I loved it and it would make my 7 mile very hilly commute more do able but just weighing up whether we can justify the large outlay...

Sirzy · 07/06/2022 07:15

As worrying as it is from an individual car user POV it is also a massive problem for every consumer because hauliers are having to increase their costs to cover the massive rises they are facing. A tax cut on bunker fuel would be a start but it won’t happen.

Skullduggeryfizz · 07/06/2022 07:15

I am a care worker driving up to 500 miles a week and get 30 pence per mile. Why won't Rishi Sunak put the tax free mileage rates up and limit the variation in the min/max rate. It seems unfair that employers can pick and choose the amount.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/06/2022 07:23

Oh god yes. Cost me 53 pounds to fill up yesterday. I wasn't even on red although not far off and its a fiesta not a tanker.

When i first started driving 7 years ago it cost me about 38 pounds to fill the tank.

Guess I'm lucky I only have 6 weeks left of school runs. I'm a single parent who works part time and receives a top up. I cant afford this indefinitely

OneFrenchEgg · 07/06/2022 07:32

Cost me £75 to full up my small car this week, was sure it was about £55 when I bought it four years ago. Light wasn't even on I just wanted a full tank.

Notlabeled · 07/06/2022 07:50

Why is everyone shocked? You've all been voting for this for decades. Reap what you sow.
You really think an eco-loon like Carrie Symonds is whispering pro car, low fuel tax policy ideas into Boris' ears?
This move against cars and personal transport started under Blair and Brown, and hasn't stopped since. Don't expect it to stop soon.
This may be the very last few years of the majority being able to afford a car, enjoy it while you can.

greenbirdsong · 07/06/2022 07:56

It went up 10p a litre where I live over the weekend. I filled up Friday and it was 171.9 and yesterday it was 181.9!
Where is it going to stop or end?
What with cost of elec/gas at home and petrol it's just got to the point where everyone is struggling.
It probably won't ever come down again either.

But the oil companies are making record profits - how is this allowed to happen?

I feel so angry about it.

The nearest supermarket with a petrol station is over 25 miles away and takes 45+ minutes in the car.
