Spineless MPs….then he’ll limp along doing even more attention seeking stunts.

OP posts:

Please make him go away - so YBU to say he will win tonight. I hope not . Any one else at all.

Gastonia · 06/06/2022 09:58

Just the payroll votes (if they all follow convention) will get him close to 180 votes
Surely not all of them are in safe seats, and some must also not solely be motivated by self interest? It's probably just wishful thinking, but surely there must be enough MPs who want to get rid of him?

I don't think Andy Burnham and Yvette Cooper can be regarded as lightweights, tbh. Burnham is massively popular and had an excellent track record, and Cooper has long been regarded as one of the most able among Labour MPs, indeed, among MPs generally.

Her work on the Home Affairs select committee has been really impressive, to the point where (iirc) she was elected unopposed as chair.

That was the original leadership contest, not the heave against him.

P00rKids · 06/06/2022 10:00

For me if it had to be anyone it would be Theresa May again (without the Brexit stuff). But I’m voting Green next election. Not done that for years (and not happy with their policies either) but my protest vote will be partly for environmental reasons. No other option.

Apart from obvious situations, like Thatcher being booed in Sheffield during the miners’ strike, can anyone remember a prime minister being booed at a public event before? I think this weekend showed what an embarrassment he is.

I remember the lefty conniption fits being heard loud and clear while Cameron fave a speech outside Downing Street after becoming PM.

I wonder if he will lose?

Jeremy Hunt is my bet and the only name anyone has heard of.

Boris really does like the phrase "Move on....."

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 06/06/2022 10:01

There's a woman on the Radio 5 phone in trying to make out that Boris may be liar but Tony Blair was worse. How does anyone think that is any kind of argument? "yes he's shit but not as shit as someone who hasn't been PM or a party leader for 15 years but we still like to bang on about"

Dreikanter · 06/06/2022 10:02

Likely leadership candidates?

Truss, Hunt, Javid, Tugendhat, Zahawi, Wallace, Sunak, Mordaunt?

At least Gove, Patel and Raaaaaaab are coming in as outsiders.

Would Elwood give it a try? (although nowhere near Brexitty enough for the ERG types).

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 06/06/2022 10:02

I think he'll cling on even if he loses the vote. They'll have to get the baliffs in to drag him out of his nice cushy set up.

SleeplessInEngland · 06/06/2022 10:02

The funny thing is that even if he loses he doesn't have to resign.

WildFlowerBees · 06/06/2022 10:02

Being a secret ballot surely some could voice their support but actually vote against in the ballot?

We don't live in a democratic society, Boris has shown himself to be a man without morals, ethics or any care for the country he's supposedly looking out for.

I sincerely hope he loses out.

Forinara · 06/06/2022 10:03

There is literally nobody else suitable for the role. Who would take over from him? It is not an attractive option for a career politician in 2022. I bet he gets a small raise every time he wins it!

CapMarvel · 06/06/2022 10:04

He'll survive, and fairly comfortably - bad news for the country in the short term but probably good news if you enjoy watching the tory party self-destruct.

Warmhandscoldheart · 06/06/2022 10:04

My sycophant MP has already announced he will be voting for him 🤬

felulageller · 06/06/2022 08:35

There's no decent alternative in the Tory party.

There are lots of perfectly capable people in both main parties. Trouble is that the capable one generally aren't interested in being a senior minister/PM due to all it involves, not just the politics but the intrusion into family life, boot-licking, wheeling & dealing etc. That's how we've ended up with a succession of senior ministers/prime ministers (and their shadows) who mostly aren't the "right" kind of person to do the job well. It takes a certain kind of person to put up (or want) all the crap that comes with being a top politicians. That's why we have huge numbers of back benchers who actually want to stay as back-benchers. Same with the USA presidential elections where it's a choice because two poor candidates because no one else actually "wants" all that comes with being the president.

theworldhas · 06/06/2022 10:06

@Laiste
With Boris seeming to be the most unpopular PM in years how come Labour's leader is so ... i don't know, flat and inconspicuous?

not a huge fan if Starmer’s leadership of Labour, but we used to elect political parties and Pms based on their political ideology/manifesto and perceived competence, not entertainment value.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 06/06/2022 10:06

I hope he wins because he is destroying the Conservative Party and I despise everything they stand for.

Same

Mistlewoeandwhine · 06/06/2022 10:08

Or he could lose and they could replace him with Truss. That would have excellent comical value.

Gastonia · 06/06/2022 10:08

I didn't realise it was a secret ballot. That makes me more hopeful that he may lose.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 06/06/2022 10:09

If he goes there isn't anyone decent to replace him, so nothing will change. What we need is a GE not a VONC

Lonelycrab · 06/06/2022 10:09

My guess is Hunt too, while the Tories work out wtf they’re going to do with the mess they’ve made for themselves.

Truss just looks way too out of her depth. Watching her try to give a speech is just cringeworthy, she comes across as a halfwit to me.

Triffid1 · 06/06/2022 10:10

The problem with almost every alternative Tory MP is that the longer they continue to support Johnson, the more the rest of us see them as completely craven, spineless and embarrassing.

This is the irony - they're all too scared to call him out when actually, any of the top politicians who absolutely stood up and said, "this is and was completely unacceptable and this man is awful" would immediately win a lot of support from the public.

theworldhas · 06/06/2022 10:11

I reckon he will stay, as Tories think the Boris “Character/Persona” is about only thing they’ve got going for them in reaching out to the soft voters (as opposed to the 30% of hardcore English Tory voters who never think beyond House Prices when casting their vote). That said, they’ll be making a mistake of they do back him. I reckon Bumbling Bono the Lovable Clown character has pretty much played out and the majority of the British public are bored of it now and actually a bit worried about how everything is going to the shit. As a likely Labour voter, I hope he stays in power.
