I know, I know. Born into a life of privelage blah, blah, blah.. But it isn't a life they ask for.

Personally I think the children in the royal family should be kept out of the spotlight until they're adults and can decide what they want to do. They should just be kids until then. Maybe with the odd photo released with granny or whatever.
I can see history repeating itself with the 'rebel prince' that his uncle went through........I cant help but wonder what the hell his parents are thinking allowing this. 😳 It didnt work out well for Harry who was used to deflect attention away from the shit his brother was getting up to for years 😬

I heard that radio broadcast recently as part of the jubilee celebrations. What amazed me most was how young she sounded (and looked, from the accompanying photos) and how she treated Margaret like a toddler. She actually says 'Come on, Margaret ... Good night, children' in such a patronising tone. If the older dc tried that on my 12 year old now she wouldn't be at all impressed at being treated like she was 3! It's amazing how much younger children are developping over just 80 years

The tone wasn't at all patronizing, and Princess Elizabeth was reading from a script which had been written for her. I have read that she was very nervous about doing the broadcast, and rehearsed it many times before going on air.

I don't believe the children of that time would have felt at all patronized. Society has changed in 80 years. (Please don't say "for the better," as that's a whole other debate).

Brefugee · 07/06/2022 08:25

It sounded patronising because it's not natural doing a broadcast like that. Added to the mangled RP accent she uses (was worse back then) it couldn't have sounded anything other than patronising.

Back to Margaret though - there was all that guff about her One True Love being thwarted, but she escaped something there with Townsend i think. And she wasn't forced to end it with him, she was given the choice of marrying him and losing her HRH or ditching him and remaining a princess. Which she did because - frankly - who wouldn't? I do think that all the focus was on her sister as soon as Edward abdicated and maybe she got left out a lot, and from that pov it is no wonder she went off the rails.

I do hope that William and Katherine pay attention to those sorts of detail. I do wish that they'd pack in dressing their children in 1930s fashions. Blimey. (the sailor suit was adorable though)

Dalekjastninerels · 07/06/2022 08:30

I like how William and Katherine dress the children.

Dinoteeth · 07/06/2022 08:44

The dress the kids in classic traditional outfits so they don't look hideously dated in 50 years time.

I'm sure in private they have very different ordinary clothes.

They seem to be dressed informally most of the time. Perhaps George wants to be “like Daddy”.

Dinoteeth · 07/06/2022 09:43

That's what I mean in private they probably dress informally ordinary jeans t-shirt type clothes normal stuff.

But at formal occasions, photos which will be looked at in 50 or 60 years time they dress them in a formal classic style so they don't date as easily. Like the balcony shots I can see them getting dug out when (if) George is crowned.

People like to push out all this stuff ‘it’s because it will date! It’s because George wants to be like daddy! It’s so they’re not recognised when out and about!’

No, it’s because the royal family are not so different from celebs like the kardashians. They depend on people being interested in them, and their gimmick is that they’re the royal family. So they have to look the upper crust silly part. If they dressed normally people would start saying ‘why are we bothering to look at them? They’re no different to us.’ But by dressing the part, it keeps those who are invested in them interested and invested.

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 07/06/2022 10:40

Is it really any different to dressing a child in formal clothes for a wedding, though? I don’t see why this is such an issue for people.

SpritzingAperol · 07/06/2022 11:11

It's probably not particularly as calculated as " it's their gimmick". It reflects their backgrounds. There are plenty of others from their gang who would dress their kids like that on a formal occasion. Those shops don't just exist for them.

Also Kate is never going to put a foot outside convention and go rogue. Leave that to the actual born Royals. The Tindalls look more ordinary in their choices.

They'll probably never go full George at Asda but it calms down when they're off duty.

SpritzingAperol · 07/06/2022 11:13

I sort of love/hated P Louis' sailor suit.
So sweet but an anachronism at the same time.

Those shops are available to anyone who wants them.

They even do tiny (very cute) tuxedos.

The Tindalls might have been more ordinary be the girls were in dresses the same as Charlotte was. They weren't in the front row or on the balcony.

Plenty would want to make sure their kids were quite formal at a formal occasion. The balcony is never going to be a place for tracksuit and jeans.

SpritzingAperol · 07/06/2022 12:53

Horrible badly behaved brat covering his mother's mouth.

Yeah whatevs. I'm no royalist but that's crap.

Onlyforcake · 07/06/2022 13:02

beachcitygirl I'm with you about royalty. Nothing good and it's hugely embarrassing to live in a country so backward it still support a royal family.

But calling a four year old a brat for doing a silly childish thing does you to be quite the charmer. Don't go after kids, it's vile.

Blossomtoes · 07/06/2022 13:04

Backward? You mean like the Danes, Swedes, Dutch, Spanish and ten other European countries?

They’re also less recognisable when they are in jeans and trainers when the press and public are only used to seeing them very formally dressed.

It is trying to set them apart as the special Royal Family. In the same way the Pope dresses up to set him aside as special

Unless you’ve never seen another 8 year old in a suit, that’s nonsense. And I have, there have been small boys in suits at just about every wedding I’ve attended. Why are you so obsessed with how other people dress their kids?

ControlMeasures · 07/06/2022 14:32

Who would we replace the royal family with as head of state? Assuming we need one looking at all the other counties in the world.

Not keen on the choices the "great" British public made for PM.

Can you imagine the waste of money spent on changing this? I think I'd rather have a far slimmed down monarchy that Charles is suggesting. Direct succession only. So Louis and Charlotte should in theory be self supporting. In practice I imagine they won't ever be.

And re. the OP, given how my 9 year old reacts sometimes being bored and tired etc. I am amazed Louis did so well.

adlitem · 07/06/2022 14:41

I really liked seeing them interact. Sure Louis seemed a bit bored, but the other two looked like they were really enjoying it. My kids would have been the same.

Overall they look like a pretty normal and well functional family all things considered. Kate and Will looks responsive and kind and manage them in what I would consider a pretty normal way. The children are going to grow up in this life, to me it's nice they can be part of the positive parts of it.

Generally they keep them pretty private on a day to day basis.

Crunchymum · 07/06/2022 14:45

The cynic in me says maybe boisterous wee prince Louis was wheeled out specifically to appeal to the the "MN demographic". Kate is just like us all, afterall. This shows what average folk they are.

They may have even given Louis a pack of Haribo and a Fruit Shoot for the full effect 😂
