Who decided to exclude Adele, Ed Sheeran, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, shanties, Morris Dancers etc from the Jubilee Party?

Who made the decision to hire so many American performers and novices?

Andrea Bocelli was fantastic, but aren't there excellent British opera singers who could have participated e.g. Russell Watson?

What was the criteria for inclusion, who set it and why?

I think Adam Lambert is fabulous. He's made it quite clear he never wanted to be seen as a replacement for Freddie .

I wasn't suggesting he should be a replacement but as the now frontman of a huge band he at least needs to be a good fit and I don't think he is.

the biggest mistake was having Nile Rogers there playing with Duran Duran (who were fine) rather than doing a bunch of Chic party classics that everyone would have loved

I know, I was so disappointed that he only did one bit as Duran Duran's bass player that I booked myself a ticket to go see Chic in London in 2 weeks time! 😁

Nothing surpasses this for me. Dame Shirley Bassey, singing Diamonds are Forever at the Diamond Jubilee, aged 75.

There were really significant techinical problems at the beginning of that performance (the conductor has written about them). You'd never know. Such a star and knew when to bow out.

BilboBagBin · 05/06/2022 15:18

Adele is ok but she might as well be American at this point. Similarly, PM has lived in L.A. forever. Ed Sheran is garbage. I was quite happy not to see the same five faces for a change.

Anyway, it wasn’t a concert for me or you, it was a concert for the queen. Go buy tickets for Adele.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 05/06/2022 16:27

I hoped the KLF would resurface for the occasion.

I've no idea. I can tell you my own dislike of Ross comes from the fact that she was the least talented member of The Supremes, and yet she managed to marginalize Ballard and Wilson by the simple expedient of carrying out an affair with Berry Gordy. Not much of a singer and never has been. Certainly not a legend. She wasn't bad in 'LSTB', tbf (not worth the Oscar nom, but not bad) but pretty shit in everything else she's been in.

And the Queen is nearly 20 years older than Ross.

Totally agree about “ Miss” Ross. Least talented but having a child with the boss of Motown was a great career move. Not a patch on her contemporaries like Tina Turner. I can’t stand her, her performance was crap, terrible choice of songs and what a rubbish ending. Should have ended with the amazing light show.

It was a very odd mix.
That Adam Lambert bloke with Queen, jesus he loves himself, not a particularly strong voice either, got the impression he’d be happiest in front of a mirror.
Robbie/take that would have been great but he was performing last night at Port Vale.
I hadn’t heard of half the performers .

I saw Adam lambert and queen a couple of nights before the jubilee and can confirm they were absolutely amazing, although agree he didn't sound it on tv!

I wish anyone luck buying tickets to see Adele and actually wanting to see her perform. Remember the Vegas residency debacle? I read an interesting piece about the way she sings, which apparently is ruinous to her voice, also she appears to be crippled by stage fright. It wouldn't surprise me if she'd been asked and said no.

Nile Rodgers considers Duran Duran to be his second band (after Chic), because he produced (and massively reworked) a lot of the songs on Notorious.

Nile is a legend, I agree, he should've been there in his own right.

Harry Styles would have been good

Yes.

Others who come to mind, Seal or Shania Twain?

Also how about good quality performers from British folk festivals?

I enjoyed seeing Ed Sheeran there today, although the mood was completely different and it all looked a bit 'bare'. He would have benefited from the lights show, etc from last night

I quite liked that it was very simple. He came on, said hello, sang his song, put his guitar down and left the stage. Legend. 😂

Charley50 · 05/06/2022 19:51

Only saw half of it.

I love Celeste, and love that song, so I was a bit sad she was a bit rubbish. Not sure if it was the sound quality, or nerves. She's a brilliant artist.

I agree that the artists playing seemed so random. Absolutely love Alicia Keys but singing New York was a bit of an odd choice.

Diana Ross at the end wasn't great, but didn't they say the Queen really likes her, so that would make sense.

I reckon a lot of artists would have turned the gig down.

At least Shania Twain is from the Commonwealth.

I don’t want anyone singing ‘man, I feel like a woman’ in the current climate. 😬 Had enough of that shite.

Yes, he was excellent!

PurpleButterflyWings · 05/06/2022 22:32

I thought Diana Ross was very good, and she CAN sing. Just coz she doesn't have a massive power house voice, doesn't mean she's not worthy of the successful career she has had. She sang beautifully last night. For someone in her late 70s, she was brilliant. Why are some people being so spiteful?

Also, Sam Ryder... I fucking LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!! 😍 Such a pure, raw talent, and he is a LOVELY guy. What a voice too! That song 'Spaceman' is amazing!

Celeste was fucking shocking. If you want to direct any spite and vitriol at anyone for being a talentless, shit singer, send it there. She has a horrible dreary hideous singing voice anyway, but it was worse than ever last night. She sang like she was pissed out of her head by 9pm, and fell asleep, and then somebody woke her up 2 minutes before she was due on stage.

As I said before, NO to Ed Sheeran and Adele. Sick of them both. Both good, but too overrated and over-exposed.

Antarcticant · 05/06/2022 22:39

Diana Ross was good, but the song choice was wrong for a finale, and she was hampered by technical issues.

The opener with Queen and 'Phantom of the Opera' were my personal favourites.

Princessoftheuniverse · 05/06/2022 22:46

Paul McCartney lost his voice years ago so I was pleased he wasn’t there whatever the reason. I’m a Beatles fan too. Totally unimpressed by Diana Ross. Rod Stewart was poor especially singing Sweet Caroline. I would have much rather have heard him singing one of his own hits. Interested to know if anyone has seen him live lately and was he ok? I was hoping to see him live this year but not sure whether I’ve left it too late or it was just that song. I was surprisedTom Jones wasn’t included as I think he still has it.

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 05/06/2022 23:12

Who wants to see Sir Thumbsaloft sing ‘Hey Jude’ for the billionth time? Him and Elton are always wheeled out. Give someone else a chance although Annie Lennox would’ve been good.

It's been widely reported that Rod Stewart was TOLD to sing Sweet Caroline by the organisers. Sad
