Who made the decision to hire so many American performers and novices?

Andrea Bocelli was fantastic, but aren't there excellent British opera singers who could have participated e.g. Russell Watson?

What was the criteria for inclusion, who set it and why?

@mustlovegin I assume they aren’t actively anti royal or anti jubilee

there are a lot of people who are actively against this whole celebration, the monarchy in general etc. some Celebrities and performers will hold these views just like some teachers, doctors, whatever portion of society. If they’ve ever expressed these views then they can’t really perform at something like last night.

ashley banjos group diversity has been a regular at Royal variety so assume he is happy to perform for the monarchy
Andrea Bocelli too has performed for royal variety

Pumpkinjam · 05/06/2022 11:05

I thought Adam Lambert looked fabulous and his performance with Queen was excellent. Not sure why he’s getting so much grief on here.

It was a really strong, confident opening performance.

I think Queen could also try pairing up with Sam Ryder as he’s also got a fantastic voice:

Georgeskitchen · 05/06/2022 11:06

I was a bit late to the party and came in when Jason Donovan was on.
Andrea Bocelli= Awesome
Duran Duran with Nile Rodgers=great performance
Alicia Keys= great
Celeste=Who??
Rod Stewart =cringily awful. Whose idea was Sweet Caroline? Where was Neil Diamond?
Diana Ross=who on earth decided that huge dress was a good idea? She could barely move!!
Very poor performance and long past her heyday.
Please retire Diana!!!

NoSquirrels · 05/06/2022 11:06

And ‘so much talent missing’ depends on your perspective. Endlessly wheeling out the same people isn’t necessarily great!

Blueeyedgirl21 · 05/06/2022 11:08

@NoSquirrels exactly. I don’t think excluding Gary Barlow means we have missed on some sort of world changing talent 😂😂😂

megletthesecond · 05/06/2022 11:10

Didn't Madness and Macca do it last time?
Sheeran is doing it today. Adele isn't reliable. The Stones are on tour too.

There's a surprisingly small pool of decent artists really. I guess lots are making up for lost covid time and are on tour.

jubileetrain · 05/06/2022 10:45

was not impressed with Diana Ross miming but at 78 I guess you have to cut herself some slack.

I disagree, if she can't do it they should have got someone who could. Unfortunately with many things in left our ability leaves us gradually as we age. There was no need to celebrate such an event with a 78 years old who can't do her job effectively any more. There was no need to have someone headline an event like this who needs is to 'cut her some slack' - they simply did an awful job selecting acts. There are bloody thousands of singers who could have nailed that ending without having to mime. Thousands.

Yeah not a great choice and it really was an odd selection, but I dont have it in me to slag off an absolute great.

Sparklingbrook · 05/06/2022 11:12

Yes, I wasn’t wowed by last night’s line up but neither would I have been by Take That/Robbie Williams/Adele or Ed Sheeran. Although at least they are British.
Music is very personal. I’d have enjoyed some Pulp, Pet Shop Boys and Liam Gallagher 😂

PinkiOcelot · 05/06/2022 11:14

Ed Sheeran has been in concert in the North East this weekend.

Thedogscollar · 05/06/2022 11:14

Blueeyedgirl21 · 05/06/2022 10:55

Shanties - weird
Ed sheeran - please no more
Morris dancing - weird, please stick to your are you local village type areas and don’t bother me
Macca - on tour and terrible live now
Adele - unreliable and probably in the US
Coldplay - oh god no
Florence - reckon it does not fit with her worldview, she will not be celebrating platty jubes
Robbie Williams- literally the worst live performer I’ve ever seen, plus he was doing a homecoming gig to people from stoke who don’t care if he sounds shit

Couldn't have put it better. My thoughts exactly.

BobbinHood · 05/06/2022 11:14

Ed Sheeran was already performing in Sunderland. Adele probably couldn’t be arsed, she lives in LA. YABU to assume people were “excluded” when maybe they had other commitments or didn’t want to? Tours are organised years in advance, potentially well before this. You can never keep everyone happy. I thought some acts were crap and some surprisingly good.

NoSquirrels · 05/06/2022 11:15

the organiser has a responsibility to select performers who are adequate

Do you really think any of the performers last night were inadequate?

I mean sure, Rod Stewart makes me cringe, but I know he’s has a long career performing that schtick. You cannot call Diana Ross ‘inadequate’ - c’mon. Ashley Banjo & Diversity were great, I thought - what’s to object to there? Adam Lambert IS the lead singer of Queen in their current line-up - you can’t expect to swap him out. I had no idea who some of the others were but I recognised the songs and my kids appeared to know who they were!

This kind of concert is almost by definition not going to please everyone.

What’s the summer equivalent of a Grinch? Wink

Arenanewbie · 05/06/2022 11:17

We were wondering about it yesterday, I was trying to google any info why they all were chosen but got nothing. Don’t get me wrong my DD was glad to see Mabel but I couldn’t help wondering why she? I’ve never heard about her royalistic tendencies.
I personally would rather have Anne-Marie with her Kiss My (Uh Oh) but not sure Her Majesty would agree with me.

Adam Lambert has a good voice but Freddie was one of the greatest front men ever, and watching Queen perform without him just makes me feel sad.
I felt the same. It’s a bit like watching parody.

Mamamia7962 · 05/06/2022 11:19

I felt a bit sorry for Rod Stewart. He said to the crowd that the BBC had made him perform Sweet Caroline which is why he asked them to sing along and make him feel more comfortable. You could tell he was nervous about singing it especially as he said he wasn't allowed to rehearse it.

KatherineJaneway · 05/06/2022 11:19

Ed Sheeran was already performing in Sunderland.

Yes but this was organised well in advance so they could have asked him when he was free.

jubileetrain · 05/06/2022 11:19

You cannot call Diana Ross ‘inadequate’ - c’mon.

Her performance last night was exactly that. I think too many people are viewing this on who she is and what she has done, because she has had a massive career and in her time was an incredible artist, but last night she can only be described as inadequate, she wasn't up to the job, I was so disappointed, but equally I'm able to see it for what it was.

CuriousCatfish · 05/06/2022 10:34

I'm surprised Macca wasn't there and Gary Barlow. They are usually first in the queue for a Queenie gig.

Adam Lambert was fantastic. Amazing voice.

If you say so. As PP has said, not that great a voice in fact. Certainly not a teeny tiny shiny patch on Freddie.

Badger1970 · 05/06/2022 11:20

Christ you couldn't have trusted Adele to show up. She'd send a gurning sobbing Instagram post instead about how much she loves the Queen but her outfit wasn't ready in time Hmm

thereisonlyoneofme · 05/06/2022 11:22

Im glad McCartney wasnt there, his voice went a while ago

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/06/2022 11:25

Adam Lambert has a good voice but Freddie was one of the greatest front men ever, and watching Queen perform without him just makes me feel sad

You and me both - though it's a long way to ask him to come Wink

Apart from the brilliant lighting I thought it all a bit of a mess, and what happened at the end? One moment it was Diana Ross howling "thank you" - possibly her only live words - and the next the Jubilee logo appeared. It all seemed so sudden and as if something was missing?

Sparklingbrook · 05/06/2022 11:26

For me watching the Queen thing is basically Adam Lambert (who has a decent enough voice) with a backing band that happens to be two of the original members of Queen.
That said though I’ve never been a fan of any of the Queen stuff.

zafferana · 05/06/2022 11:29

If you look at the line-up for the Diamond Jubilee concert in 2012, most of them performed at that, so I can understand the organisers wanting a different line-up this time. No one wants to see a re-run of something that's already been done.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 05/06/2022 11:29

the biggest mistake was having Nile Rogers there playing with Duran Duran (who were fine) rather than doing a bunch of Chic party classics that everyone would have loved

SoupDragon · 05/06/2022 11:30

KatherineJaneway · 05/06/2022 11:19

Yes but this was organised well in advance so they could have asked him when he was free.

He is performing at the pageant today.

Good Times would have gone down well.
