Queens Jubilee Concert - What a Wonderful World.

I mean, that's supposed to be a happy soulful song. She shouted it and didn't smile once. Such a shame

Seriously? You're telling me to fuck off?

Yikes!

I thought celeste was brilliant. It was a bold arrangement of the song, and it seems some people didn't get it.

Didn't get it?
i still think the mike was faulty and there was inconsistency with the music and her singing style.

might just be a matter of taste.

everyine at the party today said they thought she sounded odd and not like herself.

"Didn't get it"? 😂😂

RuthsAndEsthersSpindles · 05/06/2022 22:37

I watched it again on the highlights show tonight on BBC2. I think the BBC had cleaned up the sound a bit maybe?

It still sounded like an unhappily delivered rendition for the most part, with only glimpses of her famous jazz tones. There was even a moment that sounded a bit shrill, which has to be a sound issue in terms of what's going into Celeste's ear jarring with what she's rehearsed to project outwards.

I'd really like to hear it again from a studio or lounge setting.

Ithoughtsummerwascoming · 05/06/2022 22:52

I didn't know who she was and thought the start was shakey but I liked it.
It seems the fashion to do this sort of repressed singing.
I was in awe of the entire display I thought it all looked absolutely amazing.
Amazing, incredible pr for uk last night!

LoveLarry · 05/06/2022 12:33

Oh well. We all like different things

Adam Lambert has a phenomenal voice and is a star in his own right. He has never ONCE said or implied that he's a replacement for Freddie Mercury

But he’s singing Freddie’s songs with Freddie’s band, surely it’s not hard to see how some people might feel he’s acting as a replacement!

I wouldn’t go so far to say he’s a “star in his own right”, his highest charting single peaked at number 10 in 2009 😂

Member869894 · 05/06/2022 23:47

I've just listened to it - I thought the arrangement was dodgy but her voice was fantastic. What a shame though that she didn't smile and look as though she was enjoying it

Innocenta · 05/06/2022 23:57

@Getoffmyshoes I totally agree. It's just contrarian to say that someone singing songs Freddie literally wrote (both words and music!), and sometimes even wearing costumes modelled after his, performing with the band he named and made into the sensation it was... is not replacing him.

It's not that I want to attack AL as a person; I'm sure he's perfectly nice. But it's bizarre to me that a couple of people on this thread are so pressed at any criticism of the current Queen arrangement! It's hardly a rare objection among people who love Freddie.

SoupDragon · 06/06/2022 08:09

It's even more contrarian to insist Adam Lambert is "replacing" Freddie when he has explicitly said all along that he is absolutely not trying to be a replacement for Freddie.

RoseLunarPink · 06/06/2022 08:16

I’ve genuinely never thought he was trying to replace Freddie (and I adored Freddie!) if he was, they would be called Queen - like how AC/DC were the same band with a new singer who replaced the one who had died. Instead they are Queen + AL which is a clear signal that he is performing/touring with them as a stand-alone singer. He is obviously a separate act with his own career. I like and respect him for acknowledging he is nothing like Freddie and can’t replace him. I also think he’s a pro and great performer, whatever you think of his style.

Also I don’t agree they’re money-spinning - the remaining members of Queen don’t need money but I can understand them wanting to keep playing their music and being a band.

RoseLunarPink · 06/06/2022 08:26

By some of the arguments below you could say that a tribute act is trying to replace the original, or someone doing a cover.

Innocenta · 06/06/2022 09:21

@SoupDragon He's singing Freddie's parts in Freddie's songs with Freddie's band that Freddie named and made into the worldwide sensation it is.

That is replacing him. Words mean less than actions.

If the band want to carry on performing, and people want to see them (and clearly they do), then they kind of need someone to sing Freddies parts, otherwise it would be a bit shit wouldn't it?

They are called Queen and Adam Lambert, he has never said he is now part of the band or has replaced Freddie.

It's not like the Sugababes when the final incarnation of 'The Sugababes' did not have a single member of the original line up!

You think you are right.
I think you are wrong.
Adam Lambert thinks you are wrong.

🤷🏻‍♀️

SoupDragon · 06/06/2022 10:15

(and I think Adam Lambert is the one who actually knows whether he is trying to replace Freddie or not, given it is him that is doing the singing. It is somewhat arrogant to think you know better than him)

whynotwhatknot · 06/06/2022 10:40

Adam lambert was on american idol brian and roger saw him and liked his style and asked hm to accompany them-he specifically said i'll only do it you say queen and al as im not freddie andnever will be

they play freddie videos in the background on tour and adam states every night he is the best and noone will replace him

Getoffmyshoes · 06/06/2022 11:16

Adam Lambert is a tribute act. He’s been massively helped along by being able to perform queen songs - none of his own songs have been anywhere near chart topping, so it’s pretty disingenuous to imply he’s doing Queen some massive favour by gracing them with his presence as a “star in his own right”.

I think he’s got a good voice but I don’t like his style of performance and over the top clothing/eyeliner, it feels a bit try hard to me and like a poor imitation of Freddie, whether that’s the intention or not. That is my opinion, I’m sure there are plenty of people who share it, as well as plenty of people who think he’s great!

Innocenta · 06/06/2022 11:17

@SoupDragon He's not going to say 'I am replacing Freddie'. That would be publicity suicide.

It's just ridiculous to get this pressed about Freddie's genuine fans not liking what the surviving band members + AL are doing. 😂 I'm not stopping you from being fans of Adam! But he clearly is replacing Freddie in these concerts. Again: they are Freddie's songs. He is singing Freddie's parts.

It's actually all quite simple.

Innocenta · 06/06/2022 11:18

@Getoffmyshoes I agree, his styling is imitative and doesn't back up the claim to not be replacing Freddie. It's also just not true that he's a star in his own right. It's hardly Queen + Elton John!

He couldn't possibly have any ulterior motive for wanting his own name in the billing... 🤣

I see your point. I can't tolerate anyone else singing Freddie's songs. My ears literally hurt

I don't think it's wrong however, for Bryan et all to continue performing, othewise eventually the band may be forgotten and it would be a shame
