To think Celeste ruined what should have been a brilliant moment?

Queens Jubilee Concert - What a Wonderful World.

I mean, that's supposed to be a happy soulful song. She shouted it and didn't smile once. Such a shame

I think tbf a lot of people are criticising all of them, and some people are saying Celeste had sound issues.

Yes, Rod has certainly been roundly criticised on every thread about this!

TheLaLaLady · 05/06/2022 13:05

Rod and Diana didn’t sound too good BUT they are older so it’s kind of expected and forgivable.

Celeste was awful, she shouldn’t have done it if she wasn’t up to it. The original soundtrack playing in the background with the light show would have been lovely.

However, I was enjoying the concert up to all the preachiness about the environment AGAIN. And it went on for ages too, I just didn’t like it and it ruined the whole thing personally.

Another here. I'm 37!

I'm 33. Judging by this thread she's a current act, so we're already too ancient to understand pop.

Innocenta · 05/06/2022 13:17

@LoveLarry Of course he's implicitly a replacement when he's singing Freddie's parts 🙄 And that is, actually, quite distasteful. I'm not saying he has no talent or anything, but Freddie was uniquely brilliant. Half my criticism isn't even of AL but of Brian May and Roger.

Innocenta · 05/06/2022 13:18

@ItsSnowJokes Of course he is. He's singing Freddie's parts. Half of them are Freddie's own songs or written for Freddie by Brian.

SoupDragon · 05/06/2022 13:19

He is Adam Lambert singing Queen songs.

SoupDragon · 05/06/2022 13:20

I know who Celeste is and I am old. I do listen to R1 though.

SpeedofaSloth · 05/06/2022 13:27

No one sounded really on top form last night, except Duran Duran who I would probably forgive anything, to be fair.

There's no "of course" about it and there's no need for the eye roll

It's Queen AND Adam Lambert. Not Queen featuring Adam Lambert or even just Queen.

It's ok to be wrong sometimes. It's the doubling down that's the embarrassing bit

No he is not! He is singing Queen songs in his own way. He is not a Freddie impersonator in any way at all. Brian May and Roger Taylor stated they didn't want another Freddie as no one can replace him. When they approached Adam, he was also very clear that he will not be an impersonator of Freddie as again no one can replace him. He wanted to bring his voice to queen songs and nothing else.

Their choice of songs made me sad. How pathetic is that? Grin

Mabel was great, I thought.

Innocenta · 05/06/2022 14:31

@LoveLarry it's stanning Adam Lambert that's embarrassing!

Innocenta · 05/06/2022 14:33

@ItsSnowJokes ...yes, and it's creepy of Brian and Roger to keep milking their dead friend.

They are Freddie's parts in Freddie's songs. Not sure what you're struggling with here. It's not hard.

Diverseopinions · 05/06/2022 14:34

I think this is a horrid premise for a thread, and I think MN should pull it down. It's mean, isn't it, saying one person ruined a whole concert.

No one is saying one person ruined the whole concert.

"Stanning"? Are you 12?

I happen to think he has a good voice and can see, quite clearly, that Adam Lambert is Adam Lambert

God, I'm cringing for you.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 05/06/2022 16:09

I thought it was awful as well and so did DD 9

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 05/06/2022 16:10

I agree with this

Oh well. We all like different things

Adam Lambert has a phenomenal voice and is a star in his own right. He has never ONCE said or implied that he's a replacement for Freddie Mercury*

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 05/06/2022 16:19

Innocenta manages to get into an argument on every thread. Just saying.

@HearMeSnore

"I also think Sam Ryder would have been incredible doing Freddie Mercury's part instead of Adam Lambert."

I'm afraid Sam Ryder couldn't have done it. Because he was at the Emirates, supporting The Killlers.

Oh dear @Oblomov22

@ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave It's a crime to have an opinion 😂

Innocenta · 05/06/2022 18:32

@LoveLarry Did I at any point say Lambert has a bad voice? Nope. On the contrary, I acknowledged he is talented.

Still not a patch on Freddie. As I was very clear about, half the issue isn't even with him but with the surviving members of Queen who feel the need to squeeze every last £ out of Freddie's work.

hazelbeach · 05/06/2022 18:34

I thought her vocal performance was magnificent, as was the arrangement. Must have been very challenging to sing.

I don't think she's flat, I think it just sounds jarring at first to expect the familiar notes of the melody, and instead get a deliberately discordant version sung in a minor key.

Which was surely the point being made - a world facing a climate change emergency shouldn't be sung about in major key lullabies.
