Queens Jubilee Concert - What a Wonderful World.

I mean, that's supposed to be a happy soulful song. She shouted it and didn't smile once. Such a shame

I was a bit 😯 when Alicia Keys said "I love London, it's just like New York". Or words to that effect. And then sang a song about New York.

BilboBagBin · 05/06/2022 00:46

Sour grapes. She was amazing, and I say that as someone who had never heard of her until tonight and hates modern music.

In what way is it "sour grapes"?

blueshoes · 05/06/2022 01:22

I heard Celeste sing it live. I thought she was amazing. Atmospheric performance from her at the palace.

LimeJellyforBrains · 05/06/2022 01:25

@BeaLola Yes I was thinking the same sort of thing - particularly Tom Jones and The Rolling Stones (they're touring Europe atm?). And Shirley Bassey!

I remember hearing years ago that Charles was a big fan of Diana Ross & The Supremes, and also The Three Degrees, so I think that was for him.

I thought the choice of Duran Duran was a bit naughty and would have loved them to show Charles' face during their set, seeing as they were Princess Diana's favourite band... Wink

RhannionKPSS · 05/06/2022 01:25

I thought she was flat, Diana Ross was miming, horrible dress & an odd choice, why not Shirley Bassey or Adele? Rod was rubbish too.
The Six was a dubious choice too, I mean it’s a musical about an ancestor of the queen who had two of his wives executed...
The Queen and Paddington plus the stunning light show were the best things about it.

LimeJellyforBrains · 05/06/2022 01:26

Though possibly they couldn't afford The Rolling Stones!

TyrannosaurusRegina · 05/06/2022 01:30

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 05/06/2022 01:01

Am I too young or too old to not know who the fuck Celeste is?

Same! Never heard of her.

blueshoes · 05/06/2022 01:41

The lighting stole the show. The projected moving images onto Buckingham Palace, which Prince William called the iMax, after night fell was out of this world stunning spectacular mesmerising.

MattDillonsEyebrows · 05/06/2022 01:46

I was there and can confirm that Celeste was a
bit depressing, which is a shame as a really rousing performance of that song would
have followed Williams speech perfectly. Her voice is lovely though.

You could really tell that Rod & Diana’s voices are not great any more and they would be better off looking at pitching their songs a bit differently now as they’ve clearly lost the vocal
range they once had.

However everyone else was amazing!! The atmosphere was great, Craig David was a massive surprise for me, I expected Queen to be great & they were but Craig David blew me away, I had no idea he was so good live!

Bellagio40 · 05/06/2022 03:05

Celeste was terrible. So flat. Painful to listen to

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 05/06/2022 03:43

Agree. Thought Mica Paris would maybe have been a better choice, rather than what she did as part of the trio.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 05/06/2022 08:26

Who the fuck would suggest Ed sheeran and Adele can we not go five mins without wheeling them out, so boring

Nicola Roberts murdered climb every mountain

duran Duran were awful and need to stop attempting to sing so cringe old dads doing karaoke

they should have had stormzy or Dave on also

Blueeyedgirl21 · 05/06/2022 08:29

I love Celeste’s own music but she is very ‘awkward’ as part of her overall persona/schtick I think which i actually don’t mind as it makes a change from the overly bubbly ‘I’m mad me’ personalities of most female celebrities. She’s just quite low key and not overly effusive. Also I think there were sound issues as even Guy from Elbow (love love love) was messing with his ear piece. The man from Hamilton was amazing note perfect however anyone playing Aaron Burr is going to be literally pitch perfect. Thought Six massively oversung as usual, don’t get that show and find it very try hard

Sour grapes. She was amazing, and I say that as someone who had never heard of her until tonight and hates modern music.

I'd never heard of her either. I don't know what you were listening to, but that version of Wonderful World was woefully bad. It wasn't in tune.

I thought it was notable how few world-class British acts were there. I wonder if that was a conscious decision or the A listers turned it down. I'm delighted Paul McCartney didn't feature, as he isn't up to that stuff any more, but neither is Rod Stewart, sadly. Elton was very wise to go for a pre-recorded number. Couldn't they have done that with the Rolling Stones?

Somebody upthread said Madness - yes! What a cracking finale that would have been. What was Diana Ross doing there? She's not British and has no connection with the Royal Family.

Sweet Caroline was apparently voted as the song of the Jubilee by Radio 2 listeners. What an odd thing to do, and then get Rod Stewart to sing it!

Thank goodness for Diversity, who were terrific, and Paddington at the beginning, which was adorable, and the light show, which was phenomenal.

PoloMintPatty · 05/06/2022 08:41

We loved the ALW section but not singing "I just can't wait to be King" as one of the Lion King songs was just a missed opportunity with three of them in the audience

I also thought that too about the choice of Diana Ross song @Lysianthus. I thought everyone knew it was a bit risqué

SmiledWtherisingsun · 05/06/2022 08:47

Looking at Celeste's social media, it seems she has something wrong with her voice. She's been cancelling concerts recently to rest. So maybe that's why she looked uncomfortable or nervous & it didn't sound great 🤷‍♀️

Gooseysgirl · 05/06/2022 08:49

I like Celeste but I haven't been impressed by any of her live performances I've seen (BRITS etc), and this was really really not good!! I just don't think she's a big stage, full orchestra type of performer 🤷🏻‍♀️

Who were the other members of the trio?

Another here. I'm 37!

HearMeSnore · 04/06/2022 23:01

Yeah she was awful. Miserable and soulless.

Totally agree that Nile with Diana Ross would have been amazing.

I also think Sam Ryder would have been incredible doing Freddie Mercury's part instead of Adam Lambert.

Wow yes, what a great idea that would be. I don’t mind Adam Lambert but Sam would be a better new frontman. He has a big personality and a big voice.

Purringcat3 · 05/06/2022 09:03

Some of their microphones were fucked, they defo had sound issues. Even the partial lip syncers were drowned out by their own backing tracks

rocketfromthecrypt · 05/06/2022 09:07

The production and lighting were astonishing. Andrea Bocelli and Diversity were great. Alicia Keys was very good (and I don't much like her, but she is talented). Celeste was dire, what an embarrassment. Diana Ross was cringe as was Rod (I think he's always dreadful though). Excellent presentation with variable content quality, all in all.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 05/06/2022 09:08

MarieKlepto · 05/06/2022 00:14

I had to switch over. It was just plain odd. There was no strong curation of acts, it felt more like "we need volunteers for the school trip". Maybe some sort of UK and Commonwealth performers bill from throughout the years (ok, prob not from 70 years ago but you get my drift). A few collaborations that were a bit off the wall like Take That with Stormzy or JLS with Kate Tempest. I just got as bored as Prince George!

I agree with you. The production was amazing and some of the performances were great (although some were... less so), but for me the whole thing lacked vision or cohesion. It was a Royal Variety Performance on acid. Maybe that was the vision...

Oblomov22 · 05/06/2022 09:12

@HearMeSnore

"I also think Sam Ryder would have been incredible doing Freddie Mercury's part instead of Adam Lambert."

I'm afraid Sam Ryder couldn't have done it. Because he was at the Emirates, supporting The Killlers.

To think Celeste ruined what should have been a brilliant moment?
DelilahBucket · 05/06/2022 09:13

Overall we enjoyed the show, although some British gems were missing (Adele, Gary Barlow, Ed Sheeran and why was Elton pre-recorded?) The really dire acts were those who were singing over voiced backing tracks (I'm looking at you Stefflon Don).
It was very clear there were sound issues as a lot of performers quite obviously couldn't hear either themselves or the music. There were a lot who weren't used to performing outside to such a huge audience as well and that really affects the sound.
Celeste does naturally have a wobbly voice and the song was sung in a minor key which will have been very difficult to sing. I think it was written to be ironic. The only part where I knew she fudged it was right at the end and she had a wobble and hit the wrong note. That was nerves. She wasn't awful at all. Sure she was emotionless but you try singing in front of all those people, at the Platinum Jubilee Party no less. I still struggle singing in front of 50 people and I've been doing it for 25 years!
