Booing Boris. AIBU to say he deserved it?

I'm not a boo-er, it doesn't come naturally to me. Yet thinking of the photo of the queen, alone, at her husband's funeral contrasted with his snivelling 'apology' for tolerating depraved behaviour in his workplace together with his other contemptuous behaviour over the course of parliament, I'd have found it hard to resist. His presence just seems like adding more insult to injury.

I think both parties need a good shake up. Contrary to the belief that some posters on here seem to have that if you don’t like the Tories you are a Labour supporter, a lot of us are politically homeless and very despondent about the abysmal state of British politics.

The whole system is broken, how are we in a situation where your vote in a general election doesn’t make a difference in some places? Why is Parliament so adversarial - physically split into 2 halves with both sides jeering and heckling at each other ? I would be disgusted if my DC behaved like that but apparently it is acceptable behaviour from our elected leaders. It is a complete shit show and let’s us down very badly.

Why do we accept this?

Agree wholeheartedly.

And it's such a weak argument "you don't like Johnson or his behaviour because you're a Labour supporter"

Errrr no. I don't like Johnson because if Him and his behaviour.

Lots of people who didn't like Thatcher have remained Tory voters since she was ousted for similar behaviours.

SleeplessInEngland · 05/06/2022 12:34

I used to do the whole ‘I’m politically homeless’ routine but as I’ve gotten older I see it as a bit of a solipsistic indulgence.

It’s never not been ‘vote for the least shit’ when you scrutinise any given party hard enough. Change is incremental and, if you’re lucky, not outright regressive.

Volterra · 05/06/2022 12:37

ClaudineClare · 05/06/2022 12:26

Volterra I don't think anything will change while we have a FPTP electoral system.

I agree and we won’t get one as it isn’t in the interests of those in power. We have the illusion of being able to make a difference, it isn’t real. And the illusion is the basis of so many arguments. It’s all a bit ‘let the peasants eat cake ‘.

People buy into the illusion and so much time and energy goes on defending a broken system, designed to pit us all against each other.

And whilst I’m about it, why are things that are important to us all such as health and social care plus education part of party politics? Why aren’t they removed and a sensible national consensus reached in a way forward for them and time given to carry this out instead of the eternal game of ping pong that has evolved with one party doing something and the next undoing it and all systems getting weaker and weaker and now rapidly descending into chaos and failure with many physical and psychological victims?

Any chance you could cut and paste the latest opinion polling in Wakefield and explain to us what it says about the upcoming by-election?

Just looked - some of the top issues here:

Of the following, what are the most important issues for you in deciding who to vote for at the by-election? (I have omitted issues scoring below 4):

The cost of living 38
The NHS and the hospital 15
The economy 10
Controlling immigration 7
Trust in politics 5
Brexit and leaving the European Union 4
Crime and policing 4
The environment 4

Ah so the main issue is that we have had years of greedy Tory politicans enriching themselves and their mates and it is coming back to hurt them. Reind me which party voted against removing VAT on fuel for peoples homes in January and which party had to do a screeching u-turn on a windfall tax to try and distract from their glorious leaders law breaking?

Yes I vote for the least worst option.

I accepted long ago that no one party reflects my views. Perfect is the enemy of good and all that.

Behaviours in Parliament (in and out of the chamber) are bloody awful and an embarrassment. Do all Chambers bellow at each other or do other nations have a more orderly arrangement?

Money & vested interests I suppose.
But I'd love to see this put in to action. Requires sensible conversation and a less party biased media.

The latest opinion polling @ Clavinova seeing as you forgot to post it
A survey by JL Partners

I didn't forget - you first mentioned the JL Partners poll an hour ago.

Although apologies - I see that I replied to jgw1 at 12.07 (regarding top issues in the JL poll) instead of you.

Volterra · 05/06/2022 12:48

I think a lot of us have voted for the least worse option for years. Personally I don't think it is realistic for any one party to fully represent your views and it is always a compromise.

But the time comes when lots of us can't work out who the least worse actually is and that's the issue .

No idea about other countries but would love to know the answer if anyone knows.

@Clavinova Did the local elections tell you anything about Johnsons popularity?

Don't say mid-term, because strangely enough it was last time those seats were contested too.

Volterra · 05/06/2022 12:53

Money & vested interests I suppose.
That's the crux of the problem. And an absolutely massive problem it is ...

Johnson's arrival at the concert last night

Filmed by someone who follows Keir Starmer and Ian Dunt etc...

Which of the other shallow egotistical twats would you have in power then??
He's a good intelligent leader and there's no one else with a patch on him.
Yes he's not perfect but ffs how long is the news about party-gate going to go on for.

Boris has got the message, we've got the message , let's move on and let him lead.

L1ttledrummergirl · 05/06/2022 13:00

If they don't hold a vote of no confidence which reflects how most of the country seems to feel and keep the liar, then the conservative party will find themselves in the same position as the lib dems after the coalition.
How can we trust our MPs to do the right thing for us if they continue to follow Johnson as he trashes values that are supposed to be the foundation of our society.

He hasn't got the message though has he? If had got the message, he would be resigning!

Booklover3 · 05/06/2022 13:01

I’d be quite happy for Johnson and Starmer to go to be honest.

Partygate will drop out of the news when Boris is no longer Prime Minister. It is his legacy that that is what he will be remembered for and people will choose when they are ready to move on sometime after he has left Downing Street.

I think that there are some posters on here pretending to support Boris in order to make sure people are still angry. Other explanations for their posts are less rational.

Or jgw1 - she asked me to cut and paste from it.

"Boris has got the message, we've got the message."

@badhappening - Who is the "we" ? And what do you think the message is?

I'd suggest it's stop lying - and I don't think he'll ever get that message.
