WTF has happened to ice cream?

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

@MagnoliaTaint I 'accidentally' ate too much chocolate this afternoon so will have to stay on team no ice cream rather than (as I was hoping) repping team vegan ice cream tonight.

Looking forward to further updates on the experiment! I did have vegan tiramisu gelato yesterday, pretty sure most people here wouldn't be fans but it was a nice little treat after my (remote) consultant appointment 😁

PrimoPiatti · 01/06/2022 19:01

Yup, bought an ice cream machine years ago..

Harls1969 · 01/06/2022 19:04

I'm really sorry, I'm going to put it out there...I really don't like ice cream. Hate is too strong a word, but it's just too cold, too sweet and too creamy. I can tolerate it on a dessert, but would rather have custard or cream. I'm obviously weird because I also can't stand pizza.

Kelly’s Cornish Ice Cream is the proper job. I always look for Dairy and Cream words in the brand/tub name.

But! Ive also discovered Aldi Cornish Dairy Ice Cream & really like it.

When I’m visiting Sidmouth in Devon the place to go for the best ice cream cornet ever is The Fort on the sea front. It’s a cafe with an ice cream counter alongside. Ice cream, home made, to die for!

I'm Cornish and we think Kelly's is not Cornish nor ice cream. Try Roskilly's.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 19:07

Oh, accidental chocolate is a hazard.

I quite liked the coconutty vegan stuff, actually. Can't remember what it was called. Nakedpeoplefood or something. But the ingredients list was a bit alarming.

LoisLane66 · 01/06/2022 19:15

Try Waitrose 1 Madagascan bourbon vanilla, about £3+ or Waitrose 500ml dairy ice cream with vanilla pods (yellow tub) which is £2.
I ate a whole one last Thursday while watching iPlayer. Delish with homemade blueberry coulis from 2 boxes yellow sticker blueberries. I didn't use all the coulis. It's a great way to lift vanilla ice cream, yogurt or rice pudding.

Tar, like, like cigarettes? Or road tar?

This is taking ice cream in a whole new direction. Is it Waitrose?

Tar as in wood tar, traditionally used for waterproofing boats, disinfecting things, and as medicine, but also is a delicious flavouring that is hard to describe but quite wonderful.

springisaroundthecorner · 01/06/2022 19:22

A farm makes and sells it where we live. It's sold all over the city.

Jzp · 01/06/2022 19:37

That Vegan vanilla one is absolutely delicious. You’ll be shocked at how nice it actually tastes

Hmm1234 · 01/06/2022 20:00

Try Judes ice cream and not the low fat one either!

HappyinChester · 01/06/2022 20:06

Mackies Honeycombe or vanilla. That’s it ❤️

Natsku · 01/06/2022 20:15

Cloudburst3 · 01/06/2022 08:46

That would be great!
I make a lot of home made ice cream. You just need a good basic recipe, and then you add the flavouring. I make a lot of alcoholic ice cream, but spearmint and orange blossom (just add from the bottles you get at Pakistani shops) are delicious too. Liquorice is a really difficult one though - no success so far.

Have you tried something like this? www.foodieflavours.com/shop/flavours/natural-flavouring/liquorice-natural-flavouring/

ToughLoveLDN · 01/06/2022 20:23

The £8 gelato is amazing! Get the chocolate and the pistachio and have a scoop of each together. Delicious!

LpPp · 01/06/2022 20:27

Ice cream is actually extinct.
we have gelato now.

🤣🤣🤣

Diva66 · 01/06/2022 20:36

That’s what you get when you ‘pop in to Waitrose’ OP. Lidl, Farm Foods, Iceland, the CoOp, all sell delicious proper ice cream,

MummyMayo1988 · 01/06/2022 20:49

I bought a tub of Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey the other day. Banana ice cream, chocolate chunks and walnut. It is soo good! Real Banana flavour, crunchy - I ate the whole thing in 2 days. On second tub now.
I agree with you on the fat free stuff. It just doesn't have that lovely creamy texture that you want when your craving ice cream. Flavours are all mashed together and sometimes don't even compliment eachother. Or they just taste overly sweet and set my teeth on edge.

I will be needing some for my research. Malboro Red ice-cream is an as yet unrealised fantasy that would go nicely with the Caffee Latte.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 20:54

Well, blow me down.

It is just so lovely and versatile. There's a "viking" restaurant chain called Haralds that does amazing meat cooked with tar essence and its so so good. So expensive though :( Tar liquor is great too, and the sweets.
Also use tar soap on my son's sensitive skin and it sorted out his mild eczema.

HelloMaryJane · 01/06/2022 21:39

@TabbyM I lived for a couple of years near Aberdeen and we ate toasted butteries with jam. Have not eaten a decent buttery for years! I tried baking some from scratch once but it did not go well....
I live in England now.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 21:42

Oh, I miss butteries.

ExcaliburBaby · 01/06/2022 22:06

I lived in Aberdeen for a few years and absolutely loved butteries with jam!!! Tried to make some once and a) they were a disaster and b) I was horrified at how much butter was in them! 🤣🤣 they taste amazing though - wish you could get them in England!

Mummadeze · 01/06/2022 23:03

Vegan Ben & Jerry’s is really delicious. As is Wicked Cookie Dough at Tesco. Not all vegan ice cream tastes bad!

Stilsmiling · 01/06/2022 23:29

“Vegan shite” otherwise known as “Dairy-free” ice cream allows some people to enjoy a strawberry/chocolate/vanilla ice cream when for years we couldn’t. Im not sure why you feel so deprived when you’re actually very privileged to be able to walk into grocery stores and have your pick of ice cream/lollies without giving it much thought. 🤷🏼‍♀️

FluffMagnet · 31/05/2022 20:57

Could have been worse OP, you could have bought this gritty monstrosity and currently be wallowing in regret and self pity.

@FluffMagnet so glad it’s not just us who though that! It was proper nasty.

The raspberry trifle ice cream was better and we sort of liked the Turkish Delight ice cream. But the sticky toffee pudding tub was, as you say, gritty.
