WTF has happened to ice cream?

Felt the need so popped in to Waitrose for a little tub.

tubs of low calorie - what’s the point of that in ice cream?
Or rhubarb and pineapple or ginger and galangal.
Or £8 for a jar of artisan gelato shite.
Yogurt! Frozen!
plant based vegan shit.
even the haagen daazy was stupid flavours and didn’t Appeal. So unfair. I just want a tub of proper nice ice cream. Made from sugar and dairy.

ended up with a tub of Yeo valley mint choc chip and it is frankly a disappointment and tastes sandy.

I make my own. I make different ones for DS1 and DS2, several tubs at a time (I buy Ben and Jerry-sized cardboard tubs on Amazon) and it saves me a fortune.

Current favourites are: Peanut butter and chocolate, Black Forest, chocolate orange with mini jaffa cakes, vanilla fudge and salted caramel, sour cherry, raspberry lemonade sorbet and mint choc chip. Get yourself a decent ice cream maker!

Recipe links please?
Especially your black forest one!

Ooh. <peeks into Blossom's bowl>.

They had corgi cakes in Morrisons, but they looked a bit horrible. And obviously weren't in the spirit of the research. So I focussed! Enjoy your Cream Tea icecream and I look forward to hearing a score out of ten.

Does it have sandwiches in it? Or is that Afternoon Tea? What is it, is it bits of scone?!

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 17:01

@MagnoliaTaint The cats in our household are worryingly eager to test anything and everything!

I haven’t opened it yet but I suspect it’s probably a ripple with morsels of scone. It would be a bit weird with bits of sandwich, wouldn’t it?

Someone dropped an icecream cone in the street the other week. My dog had it down her gullet like a snake, I've never seen her move so fast.

I make my own now, the no churn style as its dead easy, just whip double cream and condensed milk together with whatever you are flavouring it with and you can stir through stuff at the end if you want "bits" in it (e.g. last time I made mint choc chip with chocolate buttons broken into quarters for the chocolate chips, plus some crushed mint sweets. Delicious. Previously I did bubblegum flavour with mini marshmallows stirred through). You can make simple flavours like vanilla or chocolate, or as fancy as you like, and it tastes so damn good because its just simple dairy ingredients and scoops nicely like proper ice cream.

I've just bought some tar flavouring to make tar ice cream but want to make some tar sauce first to have stirred through it for visual appeal.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 17:09

Yes, Blossom, it would. But see the title of the thread ...

Confused
MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 17:10

Tar, like, like cigarettes? Or road tar?

This is taking ice cream in a whole new direction. Is it Waitrose?

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 17:14

Is that you, Heston...?

TheOriginalClownfish · 01/06/2022 17:16

I've a lidl ice cream maker but I think I'll add a posher machine to a wishlist. And probably a massive fucking freezer too.
So far the flavours I've made are:
Brown Bread
Sea salt vanilla
Double chocolate chip
butterscotch
strawberry.

I really like the idea of the elderflower gin one, and going to try the nigella's margerita one as well.

If I ever win the lottery I'd open up one of those Italian ice cream parlours that you see on the continent that make the most amazing sundaes.

skybluee · 01/06/2022 17:21

Just to let anyone know if they're interested I found some very plain ice cream locally in the Co Op. It is plain vanilla in milk chocolate (like choc ices) - they are 6 for £1.60 which I thought was quite good considering a lot of single ice creams are more than that. Have not tried it yet.

skybluee · 01/06/2022 17:22

I want to make my own though and think I can in my slushy maker.

skybluee · 01/06/2022 17:22

Also WTF is tar ice cream?

Also WTF is tar ice cream?

God knows. I think we’re all agog and waiting to be enlightened.

skybluee · 01/06/2022 17:27

I used to really love the green kulfi, I suppose that is ice cream. Also anyone else like falooda/rose ice cream? Have only been to one place that's good for that!

WTF has happened to ice cream?

"Plant based vegan shit" Love it!

The best vanilla is Haagen Dazs straightforward vanilla. Lovely and creamy.

TheWitchOfShields · 01/06/2022 18:03

I love Carte D'Or Praline ice cream...... that's fallen off the face of the earth into a black hole somewhere 😢

I love proper vanilla ice cream 🍦 and that is getting harder to find too

perfectstorm · 01/06/2022 18:06

Mackays is good, and very plain. In the right sort of way. Good value, too.

I like artisan ice cream, but not the sort of faked up ones. We live in the country and some farmers make their own, which is delicious. I know what you mean about Waitrose. It's all gimmick, when you look at the actual ingredients. They have guar gum and all sorts to coagulate, which, fine, if they accept it's mass product and charge accordingly. But so many don't.

Mochi Moons are addictive though. Everyone's the same: the first and you think, eww, what's the fuss about these? They're weird and unpleasant. Then you have a second and think, oh, not that bad. Then a third. And then you are suddenly addicted.

Innocenta · 01/06/2022 18:11

@CountryMouse22 'animal torturing dairy shit' love it!

Presumably you're fine with this since you're insulting other people's food.

skybluee · 01/06/2022 18:29

I saw Mochi Moons for the first time today! Curious.

Hattie1970abc · 01/06/2022 18:36

Salted caramel from M & S delicious. Don’t get the coconut from there as it tastes too chemically.

I had them. Quite nice, but expensive for tiny, teeny little things.

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 18:53

Okay. Results: Morrisons' (where does the apostrophe even go?) Caffe Latte:

8/10. Lovely. Not too sweet, just cream/milk/sugar/coffee ingredients. Good texture. Bonus: Kids won't eat it.

Further research needed to see if caffeine content will keep me up all night.
