To want to murder all people who make nasty comments about me being a Blind, Pregnant Mum?

BlindBint · 13/01/2008 13:33

Hi,
Just wondering if any one has any ideas on witty comments to give to people when they say things about me being a blind mum and pregnant, or if anyone has any thoughts on how to deal with these people in a way that makes them think twice. I'd welcome suggestions whether you have an impairment of any kind or not.

Also, If you saw a Blind, pregnant woman out and about with her 10 year old daughter, what would your first thoughts be?

I am 29, and have discovered that a great way to deal with this is to have a few t-shirts with cheeky phrases printed on them. Two of my most recent ones are "Keep staring...I might do a trick!", and "Yes, I'm Blind. Yes, I'm Pregnant. GET OVER IT!!"

Best hurtful comments so far have been "I didn't think people like that were allowed to have children"
"Oooh, I bet that little girl has a horrible life"
and the most wonderful one came when I was STOOD UP on a bus (No-one would give me a seat), with my bump fully visible-two women were openly debating amongst themselves if I actually was pregnant or not. I was right next to them and could hear every word they said. They came to the conclusion that I wasn't pregnant, but I was wearing "One of those fake bumps, you know, like what they have in america to give to teenagers so that they don't get broody or don't get pregnant"

AAARRRGGGHHHHH!

I've only been Blind for 3 years! What was I supposed to do? Lock my daughter in a cupboard just because I lost my sight?!

How about adding 'I'm blind, not deaf!' to your t-shirt list. Can't believe people are so vile and rude. What on earth do they think they are doing???

mumzyof2 · 13/01/2008 13:36

OMG!! No clever things to say im afraid, but I just want to say how disgusting it is of those people to say things like that!! I know a couple, who are BOTH blind, and have two lovely daughters. FFS, you are blind, not deaf! The rude bastards!

notalone · 13/01/2008 13:37

am on your behalf. So because you are blind you must also be deaf too and therefore unable to hear the nasty things people are saying?

These people are small minded idiots and I feel sorry for them for being so uneducated and stupid.

Will keep thinking on the witty reposts and will get back to ya

mylittlepudding · 13/01/2008 13:41

I'm for you too. Maybe 'At least I'm blind and not stupid' or equivalent. Idiots. I bet your daughter has learnt so much from you, that they will never understand in a million years.

Umlellala · 13/01/2008 13:43

I am actually stunned, and really angry for you.

Maybe say 'oh, i can actually hear you, you know. Was there anything you wanted to ask me?'

edam · 13/01/2008 13:44

Bloody hell, BB, that's appalling. Am shocked and horrified.

You need wannabe, I think, hope she sees this thread.

carmenelectra · 13/01/2008 13:44

Oh God how unbelievably rude and cruel are some people?

Not sure if i would be able to think of anything witty, i would just lose my temper and swear!.

It always shocks me how rude some people can be if someone looks different/has a disability.

Just as an aside, there are a couple who live by us and the woman is blind and i believe him to be partially sighted. They now have 3 children together and i always smile to myself and they seem to cope fantastically and the children look very happy. Ive never seen anyone act negatively, but then to be fair i dont know them personally. I Wouldnt think anything really if i saw a pregnant, blind woman. Do people think your body doesnt function normally or you have also lost your marbles just cos you have lost your sight?!!

calzone · 13/01/2008 13:46

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

when are you due?

Am speechless about the rudeness of some people.

Just smack 'em one!!

Hecate · 13/01/2008 13:46

I'm sorry. I can't think of anything funny at all. I can however, think of very many insults, threats and obscene words - if you'd like those instead?

I HATE folks like that who think they have ANY RIGHT AT ALL to open their gobs about folks!

Do you ever say anything to people like this? Like mumzy's "I'm blind, not deaf" or anything? Aren't you tempted to just answer them? "No, it's not fake, it's real actually. Would you like to see? Anything else that's none of your business you'd like me to tell you about?"

Very on your behalf
I can't understand how people can be so rude and nasty

CONGRATS on your pregnancy

Wisteria · 13/01/2008 13:50

I am stunned at that and very for you.

You would like to think that attitudes like that were dying out.

Good for you with your witty t-shirts, I very much like the I might do a trick one!

Pesha · 13/01/2008 13:51

Thats just shocking. Am so

I have a very good friend who is blind and has 4 children and 2 grandchildren now! She has babysat my dc for me on occassion. Her dd is 14 (I think, I lose track! ) and is always very quick to come out with a response if anyone stares or makes comments, perhaps I should ask her for ideas!

Am disgusted that people can be so rude

colditz · 13/01/2008 13:51

You should feel sad for the because they are stupid .... and you should tell them this.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 13/01/2008 13:52

People are ignorant bastards sometimes. Sigh.

Congrats on your pregnancy

Yummers · 13/01/2008 13:53

i can't believe people would be so insensitive.
that's awful. Perhaps just challenging their misconceptions head on would be a good way to go.

something like 'I couldn't help overhearing what you said. I find your comments very hurtful, particularly as what you said was incorrect. I also find it astonishing that you would say such things in front of my daughter. Why on earth would you think that my bump is fake? I can assure you it's very real and i have the varicose veins/ backache to prove it. All this standing up really isn't helping!'

that should learn 'em. ignorant swines!

BlindBint · 13/01/2008 14:04

Hee Hee,
Thanks for all your messages!

I've personally used "My eyes may be buggered up, but my brain still works-what happened to yours?"

Also, when people atare, it's really started to get on my daughter's nerves, so we have this little converstion to each other in very loud voices.....

DD...Mum, that person is staring
Me...Well, if that person is being rude enough to stare, I will let you be rude back and stick your tongue out at them.

Which she then does.

Oh, and yes, to the poster who said they have some great offensive put downs, I'd love to hear them!

I suppose she's a bit young to be told to play the finger trumpet.......... she sounds great!

BlindBint · 13/01/2008 14:06

By the way, I'm due on 20th feb, but already in pre labour!

Yeah, many times I've been given a rollocking by people when they've either tripped over my stick-often when trying to hop over it instead of going behind me, or walking smack bang into me because they are so busy gabbing/texting/looking in shop windows instead of where they are going etc.

Most of the time they say "Oh sorry love, I din't see you there". So I reply "Neither did I, but I didn't have the choice......"

My dream is to replace my white stick with a cattle prod. That will get the buggers moving.

That is really awful
Ask them if they have kids, and then say 'I didn't think stupid people were allowed to have children - what an awful life your kids must have with such a rude mum!"

am truly shocked...
