To want to murder all people who make nasty comments about me being a Blind, Pregnant Mum?

BlindBint · 13/01/2008 13:33

Hi,
Just wondering if any one has any ideas on witty comments to give to people when they say things about me being a blind mum and pregnant, or if anyone has any thoughts on how to deal with these people in a way that makes them think twice. I'd welcome suggestions whether you have an impairment of any kind or not.

Also, If you saw a Blind, pregnant woman out and about with her 10 year old daughter, what would your first thoughts be?

I am 29, and have discovered that a great way to deal with this is to have a few t-shirts with cheeky phrases printed on them. Two of my most recent ones are "Keep staring...I might do a trick!", and "Yes, I'm Blind. Yes, I'm Pregnant. GET OVER IT!!"

Best hurtful comments so far have been "I didn't think people like that were allowed to have children"
"Oooh, I bet that little girl has a horrible life"
and the most wonderful one came when I was STOOD UP on a bus (No-one would give me a seat), with my bump fully visible-two women were openly debating amongst themselves if I actually was pregnant or not. I was right next to them and could hear every word they said. They came to the conclusion that I wasn't pregnant, but I was wearing "One of those fake bumps, you know, like what they have in america to give to teenagers so that they don't get broody or don't get pregnant"

AAARRRGGGHHHHH!

I've only been Blind for 3 years! What was I supposed to do? Lock my daughter in a cupboard just because I lost my sight?!

Oh yes.

There all kinds of people in this world. Shame you're not one of
them.

Are your parents brother and sister?

Wow...living proof that man CAN live without a brain.

I'd like to see your point of view, but I simply can't GET my head that far up my arse.

I don't know what makes you so stupid, but it certainly works well.

I would leave you with a thought, but I doubt you've anywhere to put one.

Keep talking, I'm sure in the end you'll say SOMETHING intelligent.

You've obviously mistaken me for someone who gives a fuck what you think.

Isn't it sad that there's no vaccine against stupidity?

Your voice is muffled...just bend over and pull down your underwear so I can hear you clearly.

and so on and so forth!

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 13/01/2008 14:18

Oh Look..... the worlds only living brain donor....

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 13/01/2008 14:19

Hecate those are great!

BB how do you use mumsnet? I know there must be a really obvious answer but I am too ignorant to know it

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 13/01/2008 14:19

Somewhere there is a village missing an idiot.

sabaidii · 13/01/2008 14:20

Ask them if they'd like a picture...... That'll shut them up. Rude idiots.

I live in Asia and you should hear what people say to people with sn here.

SueBaroo · 13/01/2008 14:28

'allowed to have children'

BlindBint · 13/01/2008 14:33

Hecate - You are fabulous!
Shiny happy people-I use speech technology on my computer. It reads out everything on the screen, and also what I am typing. It's a pain in the arse when a page has loads of adverts, though!!

I love taking the pee out of some of the people who are suprised that i can do "Normal" things. when I am out in public. I have speech technology on my mobile phone, and when I pull out my phone and start texting, you can almost hear people think I'm probably faking being blind. Someone actually said to me "If you are 'supposed' to be blind, how come you are texting?"
I replied to them that my phone has a braille screen.
The idiot accepted that quite willingly.

(Have a think about it. How the hell could you have a braille screen on a glass lcd or whatever it is they make phones out of?!)

I like Hecate's suggestions! Also anything along the lines of " I pity your children to have such stupid and embarrassing parents...".

Blu · 13/01/2008 14:35

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

The thing is, though, it would be completely unnacceptable for them to say those things even if you were actually deaf, so I'm not sure i would choose that one.

What about 'visual impairment doesn't make a bad Mum, but ignorance and bad manners might!'

In general though, they are the victims of their own narrow-minded stupidity, and if you can bear it, a gracious 'actually there are plenty of ways fr a blind person to care for a baby - would you like to ask me about it?' might flummox them and make them think more constructively.

good luck - I hope the really stupid stay out of your way from now on!

Wisteria · 13/01/2008 14:37

BB - FWIW I think you sound bloody amazing, can't imagine what it was like to lose your sight so suddenly but you seem not to have allowed it to slow you down or stop you living your life.
I think you are an inspiration.

Jacanne · 13/01/2008 14:38

I suppose I shouldn't be so amazed that people can be so rude - can't you hit them with your stick.

Susiemj · 13/01/2008 14:39

YANBU for you

oooggs · 13/01/2008 14:40

congratulations and hope you continue to have a healthy pregnancy and birth.

I am impressed as your posts are so correct and are better than the ones I type, and I can see!!!!!!

People are rude and make everything their business, stick with it and I'm sure you are a great mummy.

JossStick · 13/01/2008 14:46

"I can still see you're an idiot"

"What! I'm pregnant - why did nobody tell Me?????"

BettySpaghetti · 13/01/2008 14:46

I am gobsmacked that people can be so ignorant and rude.

mylittleponey · 13/01/2008 14:52

just add to josssticks great remark - "What! I'm pregnant - why did nobody tell Me?????"
you could say "didn't see that coming" lol

also sorry you have to put up with peoples rude & stupid comments.

Twiglett · 13/01/2008 14:58

I am loving "What I'm pregnant, why didn't anyone tell me?" LOL

BB .. it sounds farking awful .. I find it difficult to believe that people can be so crass .. good for you, you seem to have good ways to deal with them.

Can't wait till Wannabe sees this .. she may introduce you to the way we've worked out how to make her speech reader fart (childish snigger). Oh and she has a guide dog that does the cooking .. well not really but one of the funniest questions she's ever been asked.

I think you'll enjoy it here .. welcome

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 13/01/2008 15:00

Speechless at what an awful world we live in. How were those people brought up that they thought it was okay to make such comments? I am very and

verylittlecarrot · 13/01/2008 15:03

I am astonished at the pure idiocy and wickedness of some people!!!!

Congratulations on your baby, by the way.

say to them

Yes, I'm truly pregnant, it's a temporary condition, you know.

Sadly for you, your stupidity is probably chronic and terminal. However do you manage?

alicet · 13/01/2008 15:09

Am shocked at the rudeness of these people! Loving some of the comments people have come up with - especially the 'Why didn't someone tell me I'm pregnant' one!!! And I love the way you and your daughter deal with it too.

Congratulations on your pregnancy - I'm sure you will be a fantastic Mum - in fact you clearly are already.

alicet · 13/01/2008 15:10

cross posted with verylittlecarrot - yes I'm liking that too!!!!

BlindBint · 13/01/2008 16:47

One of my friends suggested a t shirt that says "I didn't get chance to see who knocked me up"...

Really can't wait to meet "Wannabee"-she sounds great.
