To be annoyed about the Jubilee

thegreenlight · 30/05/2022 12:34

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

No-one does pomp and circumstance like the British

That's a typically insular comment and is very unfair on lots of dictatorships and totalitarian regimes around the world who have historically done incredibly magnificent displays of pomp and circumstance, much much better than our homespun pomps and circumstances.

In your opinion!!

goodbyestranger · 01/06/2022 23:09

How ridiculous Blossomtoes. The allegations in the case were very clear. You seem surprised. Do you not accept that lack of consent was an issue?!

I’m done. Go and find someone else to bait.

Looklively · 01/06/2022 23:20

What she said..!

goodbyestranger · 01/06/2022 23:26

It's not really a matter of opinion Blossomtoes, it's a matter of law. You may prefer that there was no issue around consent but I'm afraid that's not in your gift.

JaceLancs · 01/06/2022 23:35

The main bit I’m interested in is that I’ve got 4 days off in a row
I don’t want it to rain as really need to do some gardening and outdoor DIY
My street are having a party but I won’t be joining in so will just go out somewhere
I’ve got nothing against the Queen herself I’m just not feeling like celebrating anything - too stressed and not been feeling well for a while
I am taking elderly DM out for afternoon tea tomorrow that’s about as exciting as it will get here

CurlyCew I'm sure there is some professor or writer who's spent 250k of his own money on FOI requests etc., trying to get details.

That sounds extremely unlikely.

Some people are real misery guts. Why does it bother you if someone else celebrates? In fact why not just party anyway but skip the toast to the queen? From the amount of vitriol it would seem as if the country has been asked to trek 20 miles while carrying rocks.

Sarah3587 · 02/06/2022 02:49

It’s a load of bolloxs and I’m pretty sure the queen can’t be bothered with it either.
ill still be working as per usual. Can’t wait till it’s over!

North Korea and Russia do cracking “pomp and circumstance” tbf.

Are the royalists excited to see their hero Prince Andrew paraded out as some kind of role model today?

I agree.
I dislike the insinuation that anyone who wants to enjoy the jubilee is a forelock tugging Prince Andrew apologist.

The bitterness and vitriol, and lack of reading comprehension on this thread is mind boggling.

The Royal family are not the only rich and privileged family in the UK, so why not vent your spite at other rich and privileged people or the rich and privileged mumsnetters who like to show off how wealthy they are?

I am ambivalent about the RF, and if the monarchy remains I can't see it continuing the way it is now, although I do admit to having some respect for the Queen.

All that said, thank goodness we live in a country where we can make these unpleasant comments and not be punished for it.

TheKeatingFive · 02/06/2022 08:19

The difference between the RF and other rich people is pretty obvious in fairness. We aren't shelling out upwards of 100 million a year of public funds to any other rich family. Does that really need to be spelled out to you?

And of course people should be allowed to discuss the legitimacy and ethics of this. You trying to shame them by casting it as nastiness is just silly.

Blossomtoes · 02/06/2022 08:33

If they are they’re going to be very disappointed because he’s confined to barracks.

As a RoI citizen, you’re not shelling out anything.

TheKeatingFive · 02/06/2022 08:35

Fair. 😆

I lived the U.K. for many years however. Pretty much all of my family still do. They are. You are. I did.

Blossomtoes · 02/06/2022 08:45

Yes, I am. I consider I get pretty good value for money for my £2 a year.

RampantIvy · 02/06/2022 08:48

True.
The monarchy cost £87.5m last year. The number of tax payers is 32,200,000, so they cost each tax payer £2.71 per year.

CreamyBruley can you point out anywhere on this thread where anyone is defending Prince sleazebag Andrew? I haven't seen any posts supporting him.

TheKeatingFive · 02/06/2022 08:53

Thats just the sovereign grant.

Theres also the Duchies (cunningly left out of discussion often)

And the direct tax payer costs for things like security.

it's probably closer to 200 mill in fact.

so they cost each tax payer £2.71 per year.

a) no they don't. See above.
b) god bless those PR people. They've done a super job at distracting people like you from how much money is flung at these rich parasites. I notice we don't break down our individual contribution to other state expenses. We just talk about what they cost the nation as a whole.

Why are all of your posts so nasty and full of spiteful bitterness and hatred @CreamyBruley?

Why are you so convinced that posters support the nonce when it is clear that no-one does?

It is quite possible to have a little respect for the queen only, yet despise Prince Andrew and have no time for the rest of the RF you know.

Shouldn’t all the antimonarchists be off erecting guillotines and sharpening pitchforks?

personally I’d recommend a wank to some of the more het up ones. Might chill them out and focus them a bit more.

RampantIvy · 02/06/2022 09:10

It's perfectly OK to dislike the royal family. It's perfectly OK to be a republican, but it must be utterly exhausting to be so full of bitter hatred and negativity all the time.

Just ignore the reasons for an extra day off (on this beautiful sunny day) and go off and do your own thing.

I'm not a fan of Christmas BTW but I don't go on about how much I hate it ad nauseum, and that happens every year.

Blossomtoes · 02/06/2022 09:11

Isn’t it interesting how all the vitriol is one way?

LakieLady · 02/06/2022 09:13

LivingOnAnIsland · 31/05/2022 17:48

If you don't want to go, then don't go, but you can't inflict your miserable attitude on others.

Hard to avoid if it's actually in your street though.

I'm bloody glad there seems to be nothing going on round my way, although there will be beacons lit on the hills around the town tonight, and fireworks on Saturday.

RampantIvy · 02/06/2022 09:13

Indeed @Blossomtoes.
And the sneering as well.

I find the endless refusal to acknowledge or take on board facts and figures showing the hypocritical, parasitic royals for the corrupt circus they are equally mind boggling.

I find some people’s inability to understand that everyone doesn’t agree with them equally mind boggling. It must make life very difficult.
