To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

I would be interested to find a reputable source for costings on the public purse for having a Royal family vs having a president and the cost of a presidential campaign every 4 years.

Deliberately avoiding links to republic.org to avoid tea splurt damage to monarchist keyboards pointless circular argument.

Irish president costs less than 350k per annum, to would be great to hear the royalists' affirmative arguments as to why a similar system is a bad idea. If I can get the remaining brain cell to function I'll try and post a link.

In the meantime, they skilfully avoid the question or any actual figures, on this extremely reputable link (also note the highly reliable and independent people who make decisions re sov grant):

Previous figure I quoted was re salary. Still, the eyes do not water quite so much at the cost of the whole Irish operation. Obviously, we'd have to ask the Irish people to kindly explain the concept of "voluntary pay cut" to the grasping Windsors. That's a tough one tbh.

It is a perfectly valid argument, who do you think pays for the policing? Yes, clubs stump up some of the costs.
There are also road closures etc. Granted not on the scale of the jubilee, however if you combined all football matches over an entire season, that is quite a lot of the public purse, and resources utlised.

I am not pro or against, I am apathetic towards the whole thing. However, after the last year, surely people should be grateful for the chance to have 4 days with friends and family and enjoy themselves. Be that in a Union Jack dress, or an anti monarchy tea party.

Just enjoy life, as we all know, things can change very quickly.

Clubs stump up the vast majority of the coat of policing football matches. According to this link (admittedly four years old), the costs of policing 3/4 of English matches was 6.6 million. 4.8 million was paid by the clubs. That's from data obtained from 77 of the clubs in the top four divisions.

The cost to the tax payer will be more than covered by the income tax paid by just one premier League squad.

There's no tax rebate for people who don't want to fund the RF.

If there was, what would you spend your £2 a year on?

Well, I personally don't need or expect a two quid rebate. But if we accumulated every non-royal's two pounds, I'm sure I could think of something better on which to spend it.

You should be a politician with those skills for answering a completely different question to the one that was asked.

BadLad · 01/06/2022 14:17

In my defence, the question was stupid and missing the point.

I agree with the sentiment of the Liverpool fans booing the national anthem. I will listen to GSTQ on repeat. By the Sex pistols. Nor am i a republican. I'm just sick to death of the way this country is being run.

And I'm equally sick of all the forelock tugging turkeys of this island voting for christmas.

ginghamstarfish · 01/06/2022 14:25

Those of you sneering at this, don't forget to go to work on the special bank Holiday, as you clearly don't want any part of it. Or you could do some volunteering at a food bank etc to help those you say are struggling and therefore much more important.

Snoozer11 · 30/05/2022 12:51

I'm struggling too but i can appreciate that this is a hugely significant event in British history and I have more important things to be annoyed at than a bit of bunting.

This is one weekend where people might unite, and yet there are so many who seem to seek division.

I'm not celebrating an organisation who use public money to cover up pedophilia. They disgust me.

It wasn’t paedophilia and it was made clear it was the Queen’s personal money. Apart from that, you’re entirely right.

Buggered if I know anyone's gender on here now. Too many trolls.

The contortions the royalists put themselves through in order to defend Andrew really are hilarious.

Benjispruce4 · 01/06/2022 14:39

@CreamyBruley I know, it would be quite amusing really if it wasn’t so morally dangerous.

You mean the insistence on facts? That’s hardly a contortion - unlike your allegation of a defence of that vile excuse for a human being.

Blossomtoes the striking difference in the quality of posts and responses from both sides show exactly who is stupid and who isn't.

Something that's just occurred to me - if you cast your mind back to 2020, there was supposed to have been a huge celebration for the 75th anniversary of VE Day. If you remember, the May Monday Bank Holiday was moved to the Friday with a view to having a long weekend of celebrations.

In the event, we were in the middle of lockdown, so all the plans for communal festivities came to nothing - there were a few vastly scaled down commemorations in London, and that was it.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the plans and funding were carried over from that celebration that never was, to be used for the Jubilee instead.

You forget about all the illegal street parties and conga lines during a national lockdown

They most certainly do.

TragicMuse · 01/06/2022 14:49

I hate the 'having an excuse to party' aspect. Like the English ever need an excuse to get pissed up on a bank holiday Hmm

Blackmagicqueen · 01/06/2022 14:51

YANBU I'm sick of hearing the hype and seeing flag garlands stuck to windows. This is because I find it so hypocritical that so many of the people going on about it aren't royalists and don't even know how old the Queen even is or anything about her! They also haven't got a clue about community yet wish to mascarade as coming together in a street party farce. There are far more important priorities for most people at the moment.

“The English” is more than one person, all with different interests and behaviour. Around where I live it isn’t a piss up, it’s mainly activities for kids to enjoy.

MissChanandlerBong80 · 01/06/2022 15:00

I’m going to enjoy the four day weekend, I can see it’s a historic event, and I’m looking forward to meeting some of the neighbours at our street party.

But I know what you mean. I do feel conflicted about it, and increasingly conflicted about the monarchy in general.

That said, the Queen sat alone at her husband’s funeral. And our elected representatives couldn’t even follow their own rules on a Friday night.

As are the contortions people perform to maintain their adrenaline fix from outrage.

Prince Andrew is a sleaze and partook in human trafficking but Blossomtoes is correct. It wasn’t paedophillia (and to refer to it as such minimises actual pardophillia) and there was no money involved that came from taxpayers.

You don’t need to embellish to make his actions worse than they actually are.

goodbyestranger · 01/06/2022 15:24

Haha 'partook' :) Just a delicate dabbling in under age trafficking?

The girl in the photo is a child compared to the sweaty middle aged man leering by her side. Prince Andrew was extremely close friends with those who were paedophiles in the strict legal age related sense. The girl in the photo looks to any reasonable observer like a child, or barely out of childhood. He knew about the trafficking and he didn't have consent. That's close enough for government work to warrant the street name Paedo Andy to register complete contempt for this ghastly man, not just in in my book and clearly in lots of other peoples' too. If he doesn't like it he can sue but I somehow don't think he will.
