To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

I didn’t call anyone a psychopath or narcissist thankfully. Interesting moderating from MN really.

Neither did I, but my post was added in to the one that did.

Cornettoninja · 31/05/2022 18:21

But it's not that simple is it? Roads closing, excessive noise, judgey flag wavers sticking the boot in- none of it is avoidable

Thats part of living in a society though isn’t it? New Year’s Eve, bonfire night, a national team winning any international sporting event, birthday parties, BBQ’s, the neighbours teenagers drum kit at four in the the afternoon, the neighbour who’s partial to a bit of drum and bass in the evening, the other neighbour who smokes cigarettes in their garden, hundreds of gaudy Christmas lights stuck on the outside of houses…. The list is endless. People will do things within completely reasonable and legal boundaries that you don’t like and the jubilee is no different. If you choose to get a face on about it, it’s just that a choice. There’s no compulsion to join in or even make a comment really. Avoid to your hearts content but don’t make out it’s a hardship, it really isn’t.

This is where I’m at too

I enjoyed the Euros although usually don’t follow football

not really into the RF but like that our area is doing stuff together

The football analogy falls down because people who don't like football don't have to pay anything towards the football industry. There's no tax rebate for people who don't want to fund the RF.

Florenz · 01/06/2022 01:14

If we didn't have the Queen we'd have a president, who would be a politician. Like Boris Johnson. We'd also before long have any number of former presidents requiring round the top security, a gold-plated pension, and god knows what else. I'm no fan of the RF but I like politicians even less.

PinktoothbrushBluetoothbrush · 01/06/2022 01:33

Haven’t had time to rtft beyond page 3. But would like to suggest to the OP - if not already - have a non-Jubliee thing. No cake needed. Just do you own thing, don’t wave flags or bunting, but do connect with some people around you and let your hair down somehow even if it’s a republican march. We all need that, IMHO, post pandemic. 😏

Same - I cannot understand why we are celebrating the jubilee of such an awful woman tbh.

I keep seeing a poster for a party at my local park and I'm just praying it absolutely pisses it down all day.

Bet you're a joy at a party.

Yup. Just think of Charles sitting on that golden throne.
And of that crown getting its own car.
It's all going to be fine.
We're British.

Benjispruce4 · 01/06/2022 09:19

Oh my goodness @thecatsinthecradle that is shocking!

Benjispruce4 · 01/06/2022 09:26

School budgets are so low but a book about the jubilee is reason to splurge £12m? Makes my blood boil.

RampantIvy · 01/06/2022 09:31

I agree @Benjispruce4. It is extremely tone deaf.

Got to raise the next generation of subservient forelock tuggers! Rule Britannia!

Benjispruce4 · 01/06/2022 09:36

I work in primarily school and just know that this won’t be appreciative by most chn/families. So pointless. Far better to give each school a copy and sell them to those that actually want them.

Ah, I did wonder where the Crown book came from - we ended up with two.

the problem with that is that, it's not the states job to feed a child so it's not like there is one set of money and we are using it for a party rather than food.

Presidents can be impeached and can't be given 12 million to spend on indoctrinating children into supporting medieval death cults.

BJ would never be elected president and anyway if after Toryshambles the country elects a similar type, it would prove it's terminally stupid and past redemption, so those with functioning brain cells could emigrate and leave the cult followers to their fate.

Oh, do give over. This kind of absurd hyperbole isn’t the work of someone with even one functioning brain cell. Please don’t wait for another election result to emigrate.

Blossomtoes · 01/06/2022 11:37

There's no tax rebate for people who don't want to fund the RF.

If there was, what would you spend your £2 a year on?

It is a perfectly valid argument, who do you think pays for the policing? Yes, clubs stump up some of the costs.
There are also road closures etc. Granted not on the scale of the jubilee, however if you combined all football matches over an entire season, that is quite a lot of the public purse, and resources utlised.

I am not pro or against, I am apathetic towards the whole thing. However, after the last year, surely people should be grateful for the chance to have 4 days with friends and family and enjoy themselves. Be that in a Union Jack dress, or an anti monarchy tea party.

Just enjoy life, as we all know, things can change very quickly.

RampantIvy · 01/06/2022 12:54

I would be interested to find a reputable source for costings on the public purse for having a Royal family vs having a president and the cost of a presidential campaign every 4 years.

fyn · 01/06/2022 12:59

@Blossomtoes nobodys taxes go to fund the royal family anyway, it all comes from the income raised from the Crown Estates. Even if the royal family were abolished tomorrow, nobody would be getting a £2 rebate on their taxes!

I know that. I was being facetious.

RampantIvy · 01/06/2022 13:11

So, having a president would cost us more?
