To be annoyed about the Jubilee

I know I’m being miserable but I’m bloody pissed off about the sodding Jubilee! I went to sainsburys this morning, paid £1.68 a litre for petrol and then popped in to be confronted by bottles of champagne! The last thing I feel like doing is celebrating! I spent all morning cancelling non-essential DDs as things are really tight with the rise in energy prices and the increased NI contribution.
funny how this ‘magic money tree’ can be harvested to pay for this event when people are genuinely struggling and are told to ‘get a better paid job’! I have a bloody well paid job, thankyou, but am still feeling the pinch. I know people are going to say that the economy will benefit - but how? If people spend more then inflation will rise and the BOE will put up the mortgage rates! I despair!

Peasants outside the gate eating bread and watching circuses. Twas ever thus.

Might have been a great distraction in the Middle Ages, but it sure winds me up that people are eating cake and watching the circus in 2022 also.

Ok Blossomtoes what was the basis of the claim? Do you even know?

Sexual assault, I believe.

The way this thread has turned, it's as if we were celebrating Andrew's jubilee!

Without getting into the technicalities of what Andrew did or didn't do, would you really expect a mother to disown her son?

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 30/05/2022 20:42

Can't be excited about a rich woman whos managed to stay in power due to sheer luck. We have hungry kids and homeless people who suffer daily and nothing is done for them. About time this royal family was given a good send off to live on their own money instead of taking ours.

Maybe that's the fault of the government, wild thought I know.

One can't really disregard the claims against Andrew - which he felt he had no option but to settle, at huge huge expense - when forming an opinion about his mother's response.

Personally, I'd have thought there were a number of options which lay between disowning on the one hand and paying off the victim to the tune of 12 million quid on the other.

lightisnotwhite · 30/05/2022 21:25

I think it’s fine to have an essentially free national celebration. It’s the head of state. No chance of celebration if we only had Prime Minister Day.

We have few days that the country can come together. We had the the Olympics that cost a fortune to be part of ( tickets, travel etc) or other “days” like Chelsea ( £85 a ticket), football/cricket/Wimbledon. Unless of course you’re a celebrity or work high up enough in which case it’s all free plus complementary everything on top . At least this way it’s a bank holiday so more of us stand a chance of getting extra money if not a day off.

There's a world of difference between disowning and flaunting him in public after pretending to strip him of his privileges.

Hateful disgusting misogynist apart from anything else. The RF women have to behave a certain way or they are ostracised. The men do EXACTLY as they please.

Blossomtoes · 30/05/2022 21:54

How was he “flaunted”? He attended his father’s memorial service with his mother. It didn’t look like an ostentatious display to me.

lechatestsurlemat · 30/05/2022 21:59

I saw a headline, "12 million to lunch with the Queen". I thought, "How much?". Then I read the article, thats how many will be attending an event with a lunch, not what she charges for hospitality.

I still can't get my head around why we curtsey / tug our forelocks to a random and extremely wealthy German family who were simply better at war and strategic marriage than other extremely wealthy families. It's pathetic. Plus it means I have to do five days' work in three.

German family? Every monarch since George III in 1738 has been born in London. That’s George III, George IV, William IV, Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI & Elizabeth.
When do you say the royal family will have become British?

RosieRooster83 · 30/05/2022 22:21

I think it's a huge milestone and something that will go down in history as the longest reigning monarch but I personally won't be celebrating. I'll be all tucked up in my bed with my onesie on 😂.

I hope those who are celebrating have a lovely time though.

I presume that all the people who don't believe in Jesus also refuse to celebrate at Christmas?

I know barely anyone that celebrates Christmas as a religious festival. Ditto Easter. Both are generally thought of as a time for gatherings, gifts, chocolate and time off work/school without the Jesus bit. I don't even know the significance (if there is one) of the other bank holidays.

So just like many people will be using the forthcoming weekend as a reason for a few days off work, and an excuse for a party.

This thread reminds me of many Brexit threads. I was and still am a Remainer but there are some boody awful, ignorant, rude and self- satisfied Remainers.

I'm not a Royalist but my goodness there are some boody awful, ignorant, rude and self- satisfied anti- Royalists.

Indeed. I don't like football, but I don't go around wishing rain upon the matches that other people enjoy watching. I just carry on with my day, live and let live.

There were (and are) certainly some irreconcilable Remainers about who undoubtedly got us a hard Brexit because of their refusal to compromise, we could have ended up in EFTA if it weren't for them. Very much unlike the majority who said "I didn't want this, but if we are doing it we had better try and make it work".

TwentyOneTwentyTwo · 30/05/2022 23:13

How can you cut the corners off a sandwich? Doesn't it double the corners?

I'm in Scotland & there seems to be little fuss here so far, no parties planned.
Kids in School on Thurs and next Monday too (our School took it's random 'floating' holiday last week!)

It's interesting from a historical perspective.
If we DO keep the Monarchy (& I'd be happy to dispense of it now, after the revelations of the last 30 years) then it should become a jointly held affair with William & Harry each doing the appearances that they are best at & sharing it.

There's well over 100 different events in Scotland for the Jubilee in both the Highlands and the Central Belt.

Inverness alone will have ten street parties, according to the pro-SNP The National "paper". They stated there's 174 events in Scotland.

mumda · 30/05/2022 23:41

Jam sandwiches and a cup of tea. Celebrate simply.

Furries · 30/05/2022 23:45

Blimey, misery really does love company.

Probably the last jubilee I’ll see in my lifetime, so I’m enjoying it at a nearby street. And it’s definitely the last one my mum will be around for, so having her over for afternoon tea.

For those looking forward to it - have fun. Fingers crossed for no rain.

BustPipes · 30/05/2022 23:53

FreetheKhalo · 30/05/2022 14:34

That’s a really sad outlook. We are broke, we can’t afford to do anything or take the kids anywhere during the holidays. My local parish council are putting on a free event, it will be the only memorable thing the kids would do this half term, why spoil it with rain? They’ve spent time making costumes to wear with things from around the house and rehearsing dances that the local school will perform. We’ve budgeted £20 for the day, where else can we have a full day out for £20? The queen is almost irrelevant on the day, it’s the enjoyment that’s the important thing.

Hope you have an excellent weekend, and the sun shines for you and your family.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 30/05/2022 12:59

You can be as pissed off as you want.

It's still happening.

Stay at home and be miserable if you want to. Let the rest of us get on with it and have something to celebrate after two years of COVID.

Some of us spent those two years of covid working hard to ensure those of you homebound could get through it.. and yet now we too could have a bit of release, we cant cos our jobs are deemed not worth paying for or like me got dropped like hotcakes when we finally caught covid from one of the non mask wearing customers! So please don't get upset if some folks aren't feeling it

RampantIvy · 31/05/2022 06:13

So much misery and bitterness on this thread Sad
Misery loves company.

The football analogy is a good one. I'm not a football fan, but even I got caught up in the excitement of the Euros last year, and I find the excuse for a get together with friends uplifting.

TheGetaway · 31/05/2022 07:39

Please consider the older generation. I see this as being for them. They’ve had a shit time during Covid and many are now still feeling isolated. DM loves the Royals, as do many in her generation. She has been invited for a drink outside in the street with the neighbours and a WI strawberry tea.

I will celebrate and watch it with her over tea and cake (precious moments) whilst the younger generation complain they can’t afford champagne.

My company is open all over the Jubilee. I'm off sick but it's not much of a celebration for us.

Misery bombers. They’re not happy therefore everyone else should subdue their enjoyment of whatever ‘thing’ is making them happy.
