Should I pay for their vet treatments

I sold a ragdoll kitten last Monday at 14 weeks old from my litter of kittens 3 days later her eye has swollen and become infected the new owner has taken the kitten to the vet and it turns out she has herpes virus or Chlamydia virus from contact with another cat, she said he hasn't been near another cat but none of the other kittens in the litter are unwell and neither is mum and the other cat in my household. I have however offered to pay for half the vet fees.
AIBU to only offer half the vet fees and should pay the full amount
Or
AINBU and i don't need to pay any of the vet fees
No receipt or contract was given and the kitten was in good spirits and seemed healthy and she even sent me videos of her playing and jumping about in her new home
What should I do?

I asked a few people but they all said they was unsure, I also asked on a cat forum but it didn't get much traffic and only had 1 reply and I wanted more replies

Why aren't you asking professionals? How many vets have you spoken to? Anyone from a body like TICA?

It feels like a stretch for you to say you're an ethical breeder if you only have a few people you can ask for advice from (who are unsure of the answers so don't sound like experts) before resorting to an AIBU on Mumsnet...

Have you thought that I don't want a load of people thinking my cats have a virus which I'm damn sure they don't as they are vaccinated and been tested for it multiple times. Hence why I'd rather ask here where it's anonymous

@Itloggedmeoutagain I have a copy of the pedigree - I just don't have the actual papers

I'm confused now how did you transfer the pup into your name?
I've never heard of this. I can understand it saying you can't breed for whatever reason but not withholding the papers

allboysherebutme · 25/05/2022 22:26

Can you have your cat tested, I thought it can go unnoticed, no symptoms ect. X

Ah so you don't want to ask people who actually know what's best for the cats, which could help you avoid this happening again and / or help this particular kitten get the best treatment... in case your reputation is affected.

If you were sure it didn't originate at yours then you wouldn't mind asking people what else may have happened / what else it could be as you'd want to get to the bottom of it for the cat.

But you don't want to. Not enough to risk your reputation potentially being affected. It's really sad 😞

Ok, so having read all your updates, the first thing you need to do is to get the kitten tested to determine if the cat actually has herpes/chlamydia or whether it is just a bacterial conjunctivitis.

If the new owner doesn't want to do this testing then if I were you I would insist it was done at my expense so you have an answer.

You can decide what to do after that what needs doing next.

@Itloggedmeoutagain when I got given the microchip details I got a code I had to put into their system to allow me to transfer the details to me - the code was given by the breeder so it might be that she's still registered on there somehow, I'm not sure.

Essentially if we breed him we can register the pups as pedigree.

girlmom21 · 26/05/2022 07:17

CANT register the pups 🤦🏼‍♀️

I should have provided paperwork I agree, I don't believe a kitten should be spayed before 6 months and the kitten is also registered with TICA and active the woman that bought her wanted to breed from her. My queen has been health tested before going to stud and this never showed up. And microchip number was also given to her for her to put her into the new owners name I never said I hadn't done any of those things, also the kittens insurance only covers injury for the first 2 weeks and not Illnrss and therefore can't be claimed on.
I sold the kitten for £500.
I actually do feel bad but family and friends are saying wait to see if she is happy with half fees before offering more.

500 quid for an active ragdoll kitten?!!?! im smelling a rat!! these go for £1200 plus!!?

Crankley · 26/05/2022 19:12

They are only allowed to breed with another registered cat that I agree to therefore to enhance the gene pool and the bloodline.

Oh come on OP. You know very well that once they have paid you for the animal, they can breed the animal however they want.

You are selling cheap kittens of this breed to other people who will breed from them to make money just like you.

ButtockUp · 26/05/2022 19:41

Please stop breeding OP.
You're doing the bare minimum with regard to breeding responsibly and with regard to their paperwork.
Asking my randoms online is not how breeders work.

You are just feeding the trend of owning a fashionable pet.

ButtockUp · 26/05/2022 20:12

Sorry... 'asking randoms'
